Approcing WC3 (395 reads, 5 replies)
Hi Guys!
In these days i had reinstalled my good old copy of WC3... i always liked the game, especially TFT, but i have a lot of trouble playing it.

I'm an ex-Starcraft player (but i still play it sometimes...) and now i would like to play TFT on B.net... but i can't play it at all! i'm a super noob!

I would like to ask you some questions:

Is TFT really balanced?
I ask this because i often heard that this game isn't as balanced as the divine BW.
This seems a strange question, but i ask it because i don't wanna waste time learning an imba game...

Which is the "easiest" race to learn and play with?
Now, i believe that there isn't an "easier" race to play, but if i believe wrong, which is the easiest?
I like Night Elf and Human but with both of two i'm really bad.

What is the best way, for a newbie like me, to learn this game? 1v1 or 3v3?

In Brood War i play Terran.
In TFT there are similiar race (gameplay wise) to the ones of BW?

I really like WC3 but i always had hard times playing it.
Maybe i'm too used with Starcraft... but i can't fix my gameplay.
I'm used with the heavy-macro of BW, but WC3 is another game, macro is limited, units and buldings costs a lot, i don't know properly strats, i hate that "low - high cost" device, and i find my economy always low, even with an expansion.

I hope you could give me good advices, i'll appreciate them.
In the end, explain your advices in a simple way without specifical slangs and tags, because i don't know them...

Thx.

Hi....well...first of all....welcome to the most addicting game I've ever play.

Answering ur first question: WC3 isn't imbalance....well...at least it's my thought. At my level of gaming...i've seen any race beat any race almost using any strat...the only thing that imo can give the game an "imbalance" look is the hero items.

As U should know in WC we've got creeps that drops items when killed...and there are certain items that really can give the match an imba look...imo....there are specially 2....tome of experience and Book of Death. Tome of exp obviously, as it names says, grants the hero of U'r choice a boost of experience for "free". The second one summons 12 skellie warriors that fight on ur side...6 melee and 6 ranged. In a battle this guys can really give U an "easy" win. But in the race vs race....I really don't think the game is imbalance or at least not so much that this "programing" imbalance can make the game to move to certain race favor.

For the second question, I've always thought that UND is the "easiest" race for start playing...and this is way:

Undeads requiere the less amount of "peons" in the game. This raced is mainly played by 5 acolytes at ur Goldmine and 2-3 ghouls at lumber. This results in less worries for having a descent amount of "peons" working for U, specially after some harras to ur base or things like that.

Another reason are UND heros. At UNDIES altar there is a magical hero called Death Knight. This guy's got on ability that is really useful, it answers to the call of "DEATH COIL". This amazing green skull has the ability to restore a large amount of HP to undead units, meaning, if an ally undead unit is going to be killed, u "coil" it and...DA DA! Saved. The other attribute of coil is some times even more effective. If U launch this attack vs a NON und unit...you will inflict a large amount of damage...giving some extra "easy" kills for ur side..specially to some low hp heros. If this wouldn't be enough...this baby is "RANGED", so U don't have to be next to the unit ur aiming....this mother will fly toward it.

The last reason from which I think its the "easiest" race are Obsidian Statues. This unit is really nice, and this is why. It's a natural "healing" unit and it also has the ability tho switch the "healing" hp to restoring mp. This is really nice because u've got a nice "large amount of mp unit" ready to heal ALL ur army (heros + units) during battle and after it.

I really recommend U to download a bunch of replays and watch them...then deiced which race better fits ur style.

For HUMAN race players search replays from:

WE.Sky
WE.Infi
ToD (U can find him like 4KToD or Mouz.ToD)
wNv.TH000

UNDEADS:

Xlord (currently playing for ATTAX team)
Happy (recently released from Mouz team)
Lucifer (MYM)
Susiria (MYM)

ORC:

LYN (usually called "LYNBA") Nice player
Fly100% (Mouz roster)
MYM.Grubby
mTw.AMD.Who (U can also find some replays under de tag BET.Who)

NE:

MYM.Moon (probably the best wcrafter ever...called the "Fifth race")
SK.ReminD

If possible, get the 1.21 replay viewer and download a bunch from CREOLOPHUS....imo...the best gamer ever.

Hope this serves to U....if U've got any doubt.....ask!! AND AGAIN WELCOME!!!!!

The best way to learn early is

1) choose suitable hotkeys and get used to them

2) choose a race and stick with it

3) choose a pro of your race and watch a lot of replays of him until you have an idea of how to play. Don't waste time trying to figure out how to play on your own. Learn from the pros.

Some pros play with a routine (similar strategy every game)
Some pros play with experimentation
I advise you watch routine pros as warcraft is all about routine and an understanding of the game

Good routine + basic understanding = average player

If you want to learn to play, watch routine players like mTw|Check (Night Elf), don't watch experimentation players like MYM|Moon (Night Elf) or wNv|TH000 (Human).

Watch replays: play solo

If you look at any match up on Echo Isles, you can say that game is balanced, cause map is pretty well made to suit every race. So I think game is balanced, maps are not.
And some items are not balanced like Hellneabis said. Most of us say that human's towers are imba, but I think more imba is that you can buy THREE watch towers on t2.

Balance
The balance is OK: Various players of different races have filled the GosuGamers WC3 top 10 in the last year.

Beginner's Lessons
I would say the fastest way for a pure beginner is to play against the AI.

Intermediate Lessons
Once you can readily defeat all 4 Normal AI's in short time, its time to move on. Choose a race to focus on and begin increasing your skills with two types of training: 1. Theory and 2. Practice:

Theory: Tactics & Strategy

The most common way to learn tactics and strategy is by watching AND analyzing replays. Replays from high level players (Check the Warcraft 3 rankings) are an excellent way to learn offense and defense. Once you finish a replay, think about what you've witnessed. What contributed to the winner's victory? What contributed to the loser's defeat?

Remember to watch replays of both your defeats AND your Victories as well.

Practice: Management

Macro

Macro should come naturally for you as a Starcraft player. Figure out what button configuration is right for your race and memorize the control group #s and production hotkeys.

Micro

Micromanagement is the heart of WC3. There are a couple of ways to practice micromanagement:

1. Play Solo Ladder (practice makes perfect)
2. Play Wardraft http://www.epicwar.com/maps/1245/
3. Play MicroWars, http://www.epicwar.com/maps/3622/
4. Play or observe practice games in custom game mode on battle.net

Each can help you increase your ability to micro.

Good Luck!
