the goal in wc3 (461 reads, 9 replies)
i started playing warcraft3 just about a week ago and i decided to play orcs just because i wanted to. i played a few games, and i hate the warcraft interface. its hard to distinguish your units esp if u have lik some grunts in secret valley with all the grass and the speed isnt like what it is in starcraft. starcraft was a much cleaner, faster, experience. with starcraft, i understood how a person could win over the other, but in warcraft3, are there general build orders like starcraft? what is a player supposed to aim for as an orc to win the game?on a big map like secret valley, by the time i send my first BS or grunts over, the opponent already has tons of stuff to stop early harassment easily. and can someone tell me the concept behind creeps and heros and leveling in general?

yea there are build orders, which you could learn through replays.
creeps: kill them to gain experience, which will help you level your hero. each level, your hero gets a skill point, which you can use to level up a skill. also, when you level, your damage is increased, as well as each stat point by a few points.
you should seriously learn the build orders first, i.e. first worker to build altar, second to build food building (burrow in the case of orcs) so you can get your hero and units out as fast as possible, to either rush effectively or defend in case of a rush.

my order for orcs:
all 5 starting workers to gold, 3rd worker that comes back to build altar, then return to mining gold after altar. (you can do this w/ waypoints queuing commands)
start building 2 peons
1st peon out to build burrow, which later goes to harvest lumber (you can do this w/ waypoints queuing commands)
2nd peon goes to build barracks, which later harvests lumber(you can do this w/ waypoints queuing commands)
build 3 more peons to harvest lumber

waypoints: you can hold shift + issue command to order the unit to do a command right after they finish the first command.

i'd elaborate further on build if you wish

sure go ahead. i have seen some people do quick BM for harassment or fast 4 grunts for harassment. are all build orders viable no matter what race you are going against? is macro as important as micro in warcraft? since warcraft3 isnt meant to be played with giant food counts, should you limit the amount of baracks to stem unit count?

1.you should have 1 barrack, but tier two, some people will get 2 of those tier 2 production buildings (i.e. beastiary for orcs) to have a tier2 army ASAP. you should start your tech as fast as possible, perhaps after you have 3rd grunt out.

2.you should very rarely get more than 4 grunts, so just stick with 4 unless you lost some before tier 2.

3.MICRO>MACRO in warcraft 3
macro is still very important, but good micro is more important.

4.the build order should be the same no matter what race you face. that is of course, if your gunna try an unconventional strategy and unless your opponent does a different strat.

5.yes try to stay under 51 food, because that way you get more gold. IF the game is very long or you see your enemy has a large army, begin to go OVER 50 food.

under 51 food: 10 gold per worker
51-80 food: 7 gold per worker
81-100 food: 5 gold per worker (i think, not sure never had to go that high)

CONTINUATION OF BUILD
when 1st burrow is done, build another burrow
as soon as altar is completed, build your hero (either BM or far seer, BM is best choice most of the time)
start building grunts when your barracks is complete (no more than 4)
build voodoo lounge whenever you have enough resources for it

the rest varies greatly, though you should start creeping when your BM is out, as it can creep GREEN camps alone
you should tech as soon as you have enough resources, but remember building your grunts is more important right now than your tech.

when your tech is complete (hopefully you've harassed them a bit already, to try to slow their tech, or whatever down) build 1 or 2(depends on race you are facing) beastiary(s) and a spirit lodge (depends on race once again)

mirror: 1 beastiary 1 spirit lodge get raiders/spirit walkers
vs. UD: 2 beastiary mass raiders + 1 or 2 kodos
vs. HU: 1 beastiary 1 lodge raiders/spirit walkers
vs. NE: i'd go double beastiary, but you could go 1 beastiary, 1 lodge. raiders/walkers once again, but if they get druids of the claw, start gettin some kodos to devour the bears

REMEMBER TO USE YOUR SPIRIT WALKER'S SPIRIT LINK. IT WILL HELP A LOT!

i think i forgot some stuff, but it's 2;30 in the morning so forgive me if i did as i'm extremely tired
:P hope it helps
if you wish, i'll elaborate even further (lol) on the specific strats, and how to counter them. the above units are just how to defend against the most basic strats.

reviewing what i've typed for you so far, i think that it's enough to help you get started. i suggest watching some replays to learn new strategies and how to counter strategies, as there are far too many and i'm a lazy bum.
