You are right about the 2 towers at your expo, they are necessary and any time a pro UD player expands (which is less often than other races,) they usually have 2-3 towers there.

As far as towers in your main base goes... Nerubian tower = necessary especially against blademaster, but everything else is a waste of resources that diminishes your army and prolongs your loss.

Im an UD player, and according to my experience heroes are more important than resources. UD is a very hero based race, and u can easily blow of an 80 limit army with a 50 limit, if u got stronger heroes.
Heroes is practically all for UD, UD's strengt is heroes..

Towers are not very much needed for UD, since we already got our main, which is all we need. One Nerubian tower is often needed, but nothing accept that. It would just be a waste of money in most cases. Coil + Nova + Main is enough to drive some quite big armies off. Besides towers are quite overrated, because if u get a lot of towers the enemy takes map control. Only vs push (tower rush, mass) strats can it be usefull, which u rarely meet as UD.

Um. Humans usually use towers and in most human wins, towers > units hands down.

i think beside tower rush / nerubian tower against bm /human arcane tower and 2-3 in expo is all u need from towers .. maybe orc skiping grunts and fast tech with some hh's build 2-3 towers in main or against huntress rush is 1 tower enough ...
towering ud = no map control, 2 wolfies outside his base to check when he is goin out and i creep the hell out awaiting fast wyrms + scan his base trough shop and makes cata/bats/raiders....you expo , towering dont expo = u win
