Why Grubby and Moon missed the playoffs

Photos by: readmore.de (Grubby) and Fragster.de (Moon)

It is a major difference winning a game with 2-0 or 2-1. That's a statement Grubby and Moon can sign under in bold after last night's second group stage.

The first group stage managed to swing by without any need to bring forth the rulebook to determine which player should advance. But the second group stage which started at 03:00 today, included three 'tie-breaker' situations.

Group A score difference

Sky > Grubby 2-0
Grubby > WhO 2-1
WhO > Sky 2-1

Sky map score: 3-2
WhO map score: 3-3
Grubby map score: 2-3
Group A housed Sky, WhO, Grubby and HasuObs. When all six matches were played, all but HasuObs were left with 6 points each. Grubby, who had defeated WhO with a 2-1 score, was by common belief to advance, but due to having the worst map scores by the tied participants, he failed to advance. Instead we saw, WhO move to the playoffs together with Sky.

Group C score difference

Moon > ToD 2-1
ReiGn > Moon 2-0
ToD > ReiGn 2-1

ReiGn map score: 3-2
ToD map score: 3-3
Moon map score: 2-3
Moon suffered the same fate as his team mate Grubby. Group C had ToD, Moon and ReiGn all on six points when the rounds finished. The Korean Undead player ReiGn emerged on top of his group, winning against Moon with a 2-0 score and grabbing a map score in his match against ToD. While Moon defeated ToD with a 2-1 score, it was not enough for the "fifth race".

Group D score difference

SoJu > Lyn 2-1
Lyn > HoT 2-0
HoT > SoJu 2-0

Lyn map score: 3-2
HoT map score: 2-2
SoJu map score: 2-3
The last tie-breaker issue was located in Group D, where the race for second place turned into a gridlock. Chinese Undead TED had already secured first place by defeating all his opponents, but SoJu, HoT and Lyn were all tied on 3 points. While the reigning champion SoJu defeated his team mate Lyn in the first round, he was unable to advance as he lost to HoT and Lyn had taken out HoT with a 2-0 score.

Should the tie-breaker had ended where the players had the same map scores, then the next step would be to count the score difference obtained in all the group matches, not just the ones one the same points. Should that still be a tie, then tie-breaker matches would be played.

Fan reactions were very upset and hateful not wanting to understand the rules. Accusations that the ESWC organization were biased towards ToD due to ESWC being French-based were voiced. But all ESWC did was follow the rules that have been official for a long while prior to the grand final.

noob tour, no grubby or moon = a fucking noob tour, FVCK OFF ESWC!! IF I WOULD BE ELIMINATED LIKE THIS i would go to the ESWC "leader" or sth and talk and talk and talk, change rules so its fair for all players, and if he would not listen, i would beat the fucking shit out off him.

I'm also very upset about the elimintation of grubby and moon, but those set of rules were here for 2 years. Last years other players were eliminated by those rules so dont blame the organisation that they just followed the rules they had for the past 2 years. If you all thought they were unfair why didn't you say so when those rules were set up. I also think they should change the rules but nobody asked for it before moon and grubby were eliminated....

The very same tiebreaker (goal difference between tied teams) is used in pretty much every international sports competition so yeah it's safe to say you're just bitching because your idol got eliminated even though they have no one to blame but themselves.

The rules were spelled out beforehand. With the remaining cast of gosus, I would hardly call this a "noob tour". What's wrong with a slight changing of the guard once in a while?

So tell me smart people, how should they solve this tie (another option that doesnt envolve playing more games).

It was a 3 way tie they cant go by player A > B since C > A...

If they didnt make it to the final stage, its their own fault

WCIII professional gaming has the lamest rules. WCIII should make every player compete against each other at least 3 times. The players with the best records go on to the playoffs. WCIII should have competition rules similar to professional sports. Instead, WCIII pro gaming has stupid rules that say one or more losses and you are out. This is so stupid 'cuz sometimes superior players lose to inferior players just like sometimes how top sports teams sometimes lose to low ranking sports teams. The difference between top competitors and low ranking competitors is that top competitors win more often than they lose while low ranking competitors lose more than they win.

Now a top player, if not the best player, like Moon is gone due to stupid rules by WCIII pro gaming.

grubby > who --> grubby higher than who

who > sky --> who higher than sky

sky > grubby --> sky higher than grubby

like grAyf0x said:It was a 3 way tie they cant go by player A > B since C > A...
after this the only option is to look at the map scores.. how fucking hard can it be to understand?

i would have liked to see grubby and moon continue, but if they didnt play well enough, they dont deserve to continue

same thing happened past ESWC 2005
http://www.esworldcup.com/2005/?ac t=competitions&topic=results&show=group_li st&ligID=24&tID=2767&rd=7&rf=10&am p;mstep=2

Fov did beat Grubby 2-1 epic thriller that nobody expected to happen, then FoV had one map less and Grubby advances.

#18 you're kinda funny, first, it isnt "WCIII progaming rules", it's almost every tournaments and games rules, second, you compare a league system with a tournament system, come on you can't be THAT retard... -_-

What you say is that they should make a league system for ~40 players and make them play 3x against each others, so ~117 matches, and then go to the playoffs, where you have the 8 best... that's just impossible to do on LAN, that would take weeks...

compare this tournament with a tennis tournament, as it should be... and yes, sometime, the top seeds are losing only one match in a tennis tournament and get out of the tourney, bad luck or bad shape, whatever, try again, that's how sport is, we all want that eSports get on a higher level and recognition so it should follow sports ideas, and this is one of the fundamental idea...

For all those that felt this was a bad tour, why don't you guys get together, develop rules, host and run the lan, and supply the prize money. That way you guys won't have anything to complain about.

I personally thought the rules were great and the event was well run.

These are good rules, you gotta understand that offline tournaments are on a tight schedule and the rules need to be fit for that, otherwise it would way to hard to run these kind of things and for media to report about it.

The rules are posted beforehand and anyone can make objections to them, it's not like someone is changing the rules or adding new ones in the middle of the tournament.

It is pretty clear from the way these posts are written that it's just the case of people seeing their idols loosing and are having a hard time dealing with it.

What you should be saying is, -great work ESWC for creating such an amazing and great tournament that we can watch. Instead you sit there on your asses and complain whenver you feel that something is wrong for you. Do you think that's a good way of accomplishing anything? Atleast make decent suggestions on how it should have been dealt with. And no, 117 matches is not a good suggestion. As someone already stated, there is a difference between league systems and tourneysystems and they are both used in professional sports. I dare you to suggest something better.
