Is ESWC short on money and lying to their partners?

Posted by Lasse "Enron" Engen 1 year ago

ESWC has been finished, but team-aaa.com now reports that the subcontractors during the French qualifiers, namely Reseau Local, INSA Lan and Leni France, still haven't received the paycheck they were promised.

We held a meeting between exhibitors, we were promised an event with 50,000-80,000 people and in the end there were only 3,000. This is not honest
ESWC may have financial problems as they now seem to be having problems paying they partners. team-aaa.com reports that Reseau Local were promised a paycheck that had been sent on May the 21st, but they still haven't received it, now, more than a month later. After chats with the partners of ESWC, HLTV.org reports that there's a losing interest working with ESWC as they're not keeping their promises.

The new partner a mystery?
ESWC announced before the event that they had a contract with a new major partner, and the partner would be announced during the ESWC finals. However, no new sponsors were revealed during the event. HLTV.org reports that they were told during the event that the partner would be announced during the ending ceremony, but when the lights were down and the event was over, the partner was still a mystery.

The winner of the fragmovie contest and $5,000 was also said to be announced on the final day of the event, but no winner was announced.

ESWC not responding when contacted
Both Reseau Local and HLTV.org have tried to contact the ESWC administration for closure, but both with no luck so far. ESWC has expenses on a total of $213,500 along with the money they owe from the 2008 event, and if this money isn't handed out by September, including the prizes for the players, G7 will act in.

Finally we seeing consequences to actions, I think people have been allowed to get away with it for too long and lets hope this is the start of some accountability in e-sports, both on LAN and Online Tourneys...

Its pointless to host big esports events outside germany in europe. In germany (cologne for example) 50-80 thousand visitors would have been realistic if the event was properly advertised.

Are you seriously surprised? I laughed a lot because if I am right, Disneyland doesn't even have 50K visitors per day so how this organization(that failed many times in the past) can aim for 80K visitors?

Moreover, eSports in France is so dead, the only country where you should host such an event is Germany. Even DreamHack is better ...

ESWC failed once again (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lH-0s0pRleg) and now sponsors will be less and less interesting in supporting eSports.

Well done idiots!
#30 DrakaZ 1 year ago
I really can't stop laughing because the ESWC asked to the teams to send them proofs to show that they could attend to ESWC. Next time there is such event, teams should be sure that the organizers can pay the winners =)

Sorry for my double post ^^

Don't make up your minds yet, anything can happen. There was a time when we all thought EHOME wasn't going to ESWC after all.

I am with you guys, but it says it could, not that it will. So not everything is lost...and interference of G7 may solve problems, let's just hope for the best. After all, that is all players have after events...

I guess I shouldn't be considering this a laughing matter - our beloved pros who tried so hard to win are the ones hurt by this seemingly fraudulent scheme - but I just can't help it. 50,000-80,000 people? What a ridiculous joke.
#46 blah278 1 year ago
Bunch of amateurs and liars in Esports. Always has been, always will be.

I would prefer (and I guess the players too) if all this shit became much more SIMPLE and HONEST.

Stop bullshiting peoples and players with those imaginary million dollars huge event "a la CPL". It failed in the past for a reason. Esports at that magnitude ain't happening, forget it. Unless the whole world becomes south korea, which is not going to be the case anyway (thanks god !), and even less with the world financial crisis worsening year after year.

Time to wake up ! Everybody would apreciate a modicum of sincerity and honesty. Even the players. If organizers start saying : "Look, forget about big cash prizes and big hotels and shit. We're gonna pay the trip and accomodation for the qualified teams, we'll book some cheap, no-name, but nice and cost effective venue (with air conditionning ...), you won't have cash prizes, but you'll get some hardware (this is never a problem) and FAME and respect from your gaming community for winning Gold, Silver, bronze world medal." And that's it.

This way we could have a Clean Esport community, players know what they would be getting into. Take it or leave it. Everybody would be happy. And trust me : even if there is no cash prize, if trip accomodation are paid for the very best teams : PLAYERS WILL COME defend their reputations as the best gamers.

Instead of that, we have those packs of LIES every fucking year. And it's getting worse. And it's gonna GET worse with the financial crisis. Lots of sponsors and organisations will start defaulting on those imaginary shitty "Esport" payments, more and more.

And trust me on that last point. This is my daily business.
