World Cyber Games 2009 is a matter of days away as GosuGamers sits down with this year's WarCraft tournament. Fair to say, this is the tournament of the year in terms of WarCraft, considering the amount of players, let alone the prestige. A total of 280,000 USD is at stake for all disciplines, leaving us with 23,000 USD for WarCraft specifically.

In the usual manner, we find groups mixed with professionals and talents, and with the maximum amount of players from one nation, we will not see many heavy names from South Korea and China. Known names such as TH000, ReMinD, Space and Soccer all missed their chance to participate in this years edition of what some people call the eSports variant of the Olympic Games.

Following the tournament
Having a World Cyber Games TV stream has become something of a standard in order to follow the games. Assuming Waaagh!TV won't be available, the streaming service will be your chance to tune in and cheer for whoever you find most appealing. It's safe to say we can only hope for no lag or delay issues, let alone the service being down at any point.

WCG TV Schedule
WCG TV Stream

23,000 USD at stake
The WCG Finals will possess the lowest prize money in 9 years this year. Compared to last years total prize purse ($470,000), this year will hold almost half of it - 280,000 USD. The difference for the WarCraft crowds are however not overwhelming, as the first place drops from last year's $19,000 to $14,000.

1st. 14,000 USD
2nd. 6,000 USD
3rd. 3,000 USD

Sky, Grubby and Moon
The World Cyber Games history tells us that we are lucky, though. Xiaofeng 'Sky' Li is an undisputed force that built an empire of fans and followers after his former achievements in the tournament. Last year's finals in Cologne, Germany, held two other names, however. The monster matchup between Manuel 'Grubby' Schenkhuizen and Jang 'Moon' JaeHo can be a fact unless the Chinese Human master decides he want another year of cyber games glory.

Other names to be mentioned are of course all the Chinese and South Korean participants. Wei Liang 'Fly100%' Lu is currently ranked second in the GosuGamers rankings and is surely setting sight for the gold medal, while third ranked Xuwen 'InFi' Wang also should be a reckoned contender. But who knows, maybe it's Lyn, WhO, ToD or HappY's time to shine this time. Have a look at the groups below.

The shitty thing about wcg is that there are always so many good players left out + crappy players inside...

how many advance per group? just 1?

Being a Moon fan and all, I'd love to see him finally win the WCG. If not, I hope it'll be ToD or Sky... ToD because it might convince him to come out of retirement, or Sky because of his lack of tournament success lately despite some impressive wins, especially considering his former glory.

Group A will be by far the most interesting. While the favorite is obviously Fly, his performance is inconsistent. The other contenders are all somewhat well known players, perfectly capable of taking a match from anyone else. I'm assuming HasuHasi = Hasuobs?

Group E will be nice... At one point, Sky was untouchable in human mirror. But that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Regardless, he should have an edge.

And finally, lol @ ToD having to play 3 randoms. Did they really make it through a qualification round? Or did they qualify by virtue of being the only one competing in their country?

#15 no hasuhasi does not equal hasuobs. hasuhasi = Switzerland . hasuobs = Germany.

lol Group C is not fair... so much competition.
Group F is a joke... they should have really mixed these two groups..

Group E and H will be the most interesting. All the other groups have 1st and 2nd already decided.

Go Raspot! For Mexico ^_^

Wow sky is gonna have a field day. His best matchup is human mirror and he is so good at it and guess what almost his entire group is human mirror. Not only that he is also gonna have infi and tod to face if he makes it deep into the tournament which is most likely. This tournament seems like all the favorites will make it.

#15 Fly is only inconsistent in online matches, on LAN's he pwns everyone.

Hes won PGL 4, EOG, IEM and IEF all this year, and they all had international pros in them (besides EOG which was mainly chinese). The favourites for this tourny are no doubt Grubby, Moon, Sky, ToD, and maybe Lyn.
There are a few reasons why i think Fly is gonna win this:
1. Fly has a better orc mirror than any other player (eventhough it depends on item luck)
2. He usually beats chinese human players
3. He's beaten Moon on LAN the last 2-3 times
4. His performance on LAN's demonstrates his power playing with no-delay
Anyway i wudnt be too surprised if he won this, especially because he owns in LAN!

OK so the point here is that there are a lot of players here because of where there come from rather that potency. ToL has probably already given us more good game that this entire tourneyr will IMO... And well, ToL feels like a small unperfect thing already...

ToD has an excellent spot in the context. I think he can get top#3. A win would be pretty incredible... I am rather betting on Fly100%, Sky or Moon.

Ahh, I see. Heheh, I all knew was that Hasuobs is an UD from Europe. Who knew more than one player fit that description!

Moon aside, a Grubby ToD final would be awesome, considering their history in 4K.
