Blogs \ Studies and DotA
Heartz @ 7th September 2010 09:55 (Read 4005 times).
My First Post on GOSU hahaha.
I just don't know how to tell some things in my closest friends and family so I thought posting a blog could help.
You see right now I'm in college, and subjects are really tough for a computer student. And I can't really focus on my studies coz of DotA. I spend 6-7 hours a day just playing DotA for improvement haha. I don't know what to do, I would love to join PRO gaming but ofcourse my parents are pressuring me to finish my studies. In my part I would love to finish my studies and I would also love to continue my dream of PRO gaming.
Any advice ? haha. There should be a program in college for DotA HAHA

I think you have a problem weighing what is important and what is not.

#1 Well obviously that's why he is posting here :D

I had the similar problem, but I just say to myself, ok, I'm going to start doing homework at 18:00. And at 18:00 I start. Maybe it takes willpower :p I never started to smoke even though my friends kept pressuring me.

Just my 2 cents:

I think the problem lies with your obsession to win every time, in every game. Like you already mentioned, you are not very good and trying to get better - just remember, DotA is a game with a VERY hard learning curve, no matter what others might say. It will takes lots and lots of practice to reach a higher level here; it will take years.

You don't want to waste all your time and resources for so long do you?

Try this instead: make a few friends who enjoy DotA and start playing with them regularly. Not only will it become way more fun, you are also guaranteed to win a lot of your games. Feedback will help you get better and you will find yourself wasting less time by not joining one pub game after the other. Instead, DotA will become a way of recreation and relaxation.

DotA will not bring you money. It will not bring you fame - it is more a case of here today, gone tomorrow.

Studies will, both money and respect and if you work hard enough, who knows, fame as well!

DotA is not an addiction. It is just a matter of your willpower in this case.

Best of luck.

Hello, I know what you're going through. I'm going through the same process :),

I agree to what #8 said, it's a question of trying so hard to win, of being excessively competitive and also a matter of priorities (DotA vs. Study, a classic).

I don't know about you, but to me, it was ultra stressful as I also put a LOT of time in improving that I forgot about the fun of it, and I almost quit the game... after playing every game, I was moody and my neck hurt, while I didn't enjoy even one second of it. Then I took a pause of about 2 weeks and here I am starting all over again very slowly...

You have to bear in mind that this is only a game and that you play it for FUN, otherwise it's not worth it and not only you'll be wasting your time "trying" to improve - because you won't, you'll only get bitter and tense, which doesn't help you get better at all - but also not study, which will give you a better education in whatever you're trying to pursue, and that can help you open up to the world, learn about many important things, archieve your goals, etc...

Try not using your computer at all (or if you fail, not playing DotA) in some days of the week, while taking that time to study and socialize at your university (which is lot of fun), and try to be relaxed and truly enjoy the game, smiling with every click you make (not really, but to have a great satisfaction throughout the whole game, win or lose).

Needless to say, playing with friends is the shit, making jokes with them as well as going the learning process will be important to you to have fun and improve at the same time.

Take it easy and don't worry about getting better, the more you love the game and you love the dedication you're putting in, the more you'll improve without even noticing.

tl;dr:

Enjoying the game no matter you win or loss will make you improve and love the game even more. Playing hard worrying about results will make you fail and will make you want to quit. Relax and enjoy.

Source: my experience.

See ya around, buddy.
