Underdogs triumph as ESL Season 2 playoffs open

One of Phonetap and Demigod will reach the ESL Season 2 grand finals to potentially create another upset.

The first quarter final of the day was a brawl between two lesser known names in Jaron “Demigod” Nolasco and Stephen “Domdus” Vu. Coming in from sunny Hawaii, Demigod was undefeated so far in the tournament, crushing Group A over Trump, Koyuki and Kabi while piloting an extremely slow, control line-up of Freeze Mage, Control Paladin and Control Warrior.

This made his match against Domdus a drawn out one as well, as his opponent, too, had brought a control-heavy line-up. Domdus took game one with his Druid in a favored match-up against the enemy control Warrior but that was his entire success that evening. In game that went all the way down to fatigue, Demigod’s Paladin out-lasted Domdus’ Warrior to tie the score. Games three and four also went into Demigod’s favor, the latter being an unlikely Freeze Mage versus Control Warrior win, a match-up heavily favored for Garrosh.

In the all-Asian quarter final #2, Christopher "Phonetap" Huynh and Sheng Yuan "Roger" Luo went to full five games, but their series was much faster. Playing something that well resembled a blitz Hearthstone, the two traded blow for blow until a Roger went down to his Druid, staring at a Midrange Hunter and Mech Shaman from his opponent.

With nothing to deal with a pesky [card]Knife Juggler[/card], Roger lost the Druid/Hunter match-up by T6 as knives constantly hit his face. The game against the Mech Shaman wasn’t much different – a [card]Whirling Zap-o-matic[/card] and [card]Cogmaster[/card] behind a taunt totem gobbled down Malfurion’s health and Roger tapped out before he could play any of his big minions.

As they’ll face each other in the semi final, Demigod and Phonetap have the chance to make for one hell of a Cinderella story. One of them will reach the grand finals of the tournament and will face one of four Hearthstone giants in Trump, Kitkatz, Reynad and Lifecoach.
