Interview with MorroW - Ranked #2 in the TSL

As most GosuGamers will be aware by now, MorroW has made it all the way up to the second highest ranking at the TSL ladder, just behind Idra. That is a gargantuan accomplishment, and in this interview Stefan 'eX-v1o)MorroW' talks about his tactics, philosophies and experience of playing SC under the influence of heavy painkillers. Enjoy:

PR.COM: Hello and welcome, Stefan ‘eX-v1o)MorroW’ Andersson, thank you for doing this interview. Right now, you are ranked #2 in the TSL-ladder with a solid A, putting you just behind Idra and ahead of feared players like yosh, Strelok, ret, Mondragon, White_Ra, F91 and many others. That’s quite gosu, how do you do it?

Well to be honest, I have been practicing a real lot this season on my smurf accounts which all is now transfered over to eX-v1o)MorroW with around 600 games plus the ASL account which was around 250 and now on top of that it looks like I’m going to get 300 games on TSL before it ends.
I have also practiced alot with friends and clanmates over the season that was off-ladder.
Dodging koreans and abusing the D ranks might have played a roll in this too ^;

PR.com: If you were to compare the way you play Terran to that of any Korean progamer, who would that be? Are you a Fantasy or a Flash - or maybe even a BoxeR?

Well most gamers would probably have called me a big 100% Flash camper in TvP and bio in TvZ some months ago but lately i have taken in new game styles in all match ups as I’ve gotten inspired by many other progamers such as Fantasy and berserker. But yes overall I would definatly concider myself a Flash :D

PR.com: Not too many weeks ago you played in the Starcraft tournament at Dreamhack (which was won by the Russian Terminator, Brat_OK) in Sweden. How far did you manage to go and what opponents were the toughest?

Well I came to the semi-final before I got owned in the face by Brat’s insane TvT 0-3. Then I played for 3rd place against Naugrim where I lost 0-3 too. While I was playing against them I could really feel myself being in the same level as them but yet I managed to lose every single game there xd
However Brat was definitely the hardest opponent there, and I think I speak for everyone who played him at Dreamhack.

Some days before Dreamhack event I had gotten a tooth infection and shit which turned out to be pretty ugly, during Dreamhack i had to pop many painkillers (actually overdosed quite a bit) during the entire event causing me to play quite poorly. But I’m not going to put any excuses on that I still think i would have lost to Naugrim and Brat even if I was in ok shape. I’m happy to have lost to them since I think those 2 players were the best and most respected players by me, I was shocked to see Enivid crush Naugrim after that i thought Enivid definitely deserved the second spot, I actually expected Naugrim to take 1st place^^

PR.com: Foreign Starcraft is now more competitive than ever, and every place on the TSL top 48 ladder has to be taken with force. Considering your style of play and what you know of your opponents - what do you need to do to reach the finals? Can you beat Idra in Terran vs Terran, and what about Draco, Nony and Iefnaij…?

Well for starters I can tell you that I probably have no chance what so ever at beating Idra in a best of 3+ as it is by far my weakest match up.
But in general I feel pretty confident to win against any other gamer than the top TvT gamers.

To come to the finals I will need a fair amount of luck of my opponents and I will have to keep practicing steadily as I have been for the past months. My goals of this tournament was never to get into the finals, I don’t expect that much from myself but I think I will do pretty well in this event. Hoping to drop out of that with something at least unlike Dreamhack where prizes were just given to top3 xd, give me a coke and big check of 10SEK i don’t care at least it would be some prize :D

PR.com: Nowadays, becoming a professional Starcraft player is not as impossible as it used to be - with ret and Idra playing for a living in Korea and with so many well-run foreign tournaments around to compete in. Going far in and/or winning the TSL would not only mean a lot of money, but possibly the opportunity of becoming a true progamer as well. Would that interest you - in Brood War or Starcraft 2?

Well becomming a progamer has been my dream ever since I started playing 1×1 on iCCup. But I feel like SC1 will be replaced by SC2 soon and I’m in my second year of school so it would be a bummer to drop out go to Korea get bashed and go home. However if I was at this level 1 and a half year ago I would definitely try my best to be a progamer in Korea. So right now my plan is to play SC1, get a good grab of the game from all aspects then once SC2 comes just move on and own the shit out of everyone^^
I do believe the top gamers SC1 is going to dominate SC2 at least in the beginning.

PR.com: All right, let’s turn up the heat and bring on the trash talk. You have climbed almost the entire TSL-ladder, what do you have to say to the two lonely guys that are still above you - and what trash talk will you bring to the many sorry gamers you ran over on the way?

Well I dont really know who the hell Sen is, I thought he was some chinese zerg then some other guys said he was from Taiwan etc and in ladder he played Protoss against me. But he seems like a good guy.

Everyone knows Idra and got opinions about him so that should be easier. Idra is definatly proving himself to be the best foreigner by playing tons of Koreans compared to most plus of course being at #1. A few weeks ago when I saw replays and vods of him I wasn’t impressed by him at all, in any match up concidering his dedication. He has dropped and still is dropping many games to foreigners that is arguable not even close his level.

I think Idra’s problem is that he does’nt adapt or abuse his gamestyle to who he is playing against. Take the 13rax against aCe on medusa as example, he does’nt need an economical advantage like that to win against aCe still he takes it which frankly just seems stupid to me. Instead of thinking of finding a way to get economically ahead in early game maybe he should just focus on surviving it and catch up later by pure mechanics he would be a lot more successful against these cheesy top foreigners.

I don’t feel like I am in a position to trash other gamers underneath me in this ladder since I’ve also had my fair amount of dodging^^
Altho I do think it’s weak of people who bm the ones who dodge them, and I think its weak to lie to your opponent make up fake excuses not to play, but I don’t think its weak to dodge somebody. When I dodge somebody I just tell them the truth. Players like iNcontrol who I said “i can’t play more today cause i must go soon etc” started bming me and even bringing it up on the TL forum.

Guys like Tarson and Terran which I’ve simple told “i dont wanna play you cause your too good” (TvT) and then they start flaming me etc I think this is really weak.

It’s also really annoying with the guys who say “sorry i need to warm up” then you ask them 30 minutes later they say “i must eat” and it goes on like this forever. Dodging is OK - lieing and bming is not… we all want a high spot in TSL it’s our natural instinct to dodge so just accept it.

Oh yes and a last thing, you should’nt bm somebody because of their game style like many people do. Don’t let the game impact you emotionally, just learn to defend it instead of nerd raging… that is just pathetic.

PR.com: Thanks again, MorroW, for pausing in your newb-bashing to do this interview. It’s nice to see a fellow countryman show some serious skills in the TSL. Good luck in reaching the top, but before we go - do you have any other shout-outs, tributes or rants you would like to share with the community?

I’ll just go with the classical “tnx to all supporters out there and tnx for the interview”. TSL is an awesome event so far :>
Oh and many people has been asking about why I don’t stream, it’s because my internet is too poor. Once TSL is over I will share the replay pack tho so that’s something xd

PR.com: Well said, Polygon reVue out - GG!
