Eight Hearthstone and sixteen StarCraft 2 players are flying to Krefeld, Germany March 7-9. A total of $30,000 in prize money are on the line with, $15,000 per game.
StarCraft 2 fans are no strangers to Dennis "Take" Gehlens HomeStory Cups. The unique tournament that gathered famous players in Take's own apartment has its roots all the way back to 2011 when eight players fought for the meager prize pool of $500.
With the passing of years, HomeStory grew to become one of the premier StarCraft 2 events on the scene, the last eighth season featuring 32 players and $25,000 paychecks. Now, at the start of 2014, Take's tournament is ready to diversify.
First is the name change. Getting Need for Seat as main sponsor, the tournament has been rebranded to SeatStory Cup. Second is adding a new discipline: what previously was a StarCraft 2 tournament only (having individual and team league editions alike) now adds Blizzard's CCG Hearthstone.
That's how in the second weekend of March, two tournaments will happen in Krefeld simultaneously. The sixteen StarCraft 2 players will go through the usual Bo3 group stage into Bo5/Bo7 single elimination bracket. The eight Hearthstone players will go through a double elimination, Bo7 deck-elimination bracket, fighting for the lion's share of the $15,000.
The twist that makes SeatStory's deck elimination bracket different than other similar formats is that every player is allowed to bring a fifth, "secret" deck which he's allowed to use only once in the entire tournament. While the rules allow the deck to be an exact copy of any of the other four decks, it's more than likely that players will try to surprise their opponents by bringing unorthodox classes or specs to the table.
