VIDEO: QuanticNANI: After the Cup

Posted by Radoslav "Nydra" Kolev 3 months ago

Quantic Gaming made a short documentary on their Protoss player Johan "Naniwa" Lucchesi. Naniwa talks on his time at the StarTale house, the events at the BlizzardCup and the lessons learned from it.

In December 2011, Naniwa's story following his game against NesTea at the GomTV Blizzard Cup was one of the most extensively discussed topics in the eSports world as after scoring three losses in a row in his group the Swedish Protoss did a 7-probe rush in a match without meaning to the tournament. His actions quickly led to heated disputes within the community, with the drama escalating even further as Naniwa had his Code S spot revoked.

One month after the incident, Naniwa sat in front of Quantic's camera for a 5-minute documentary to share what changed for him since that day.

- "Now I want to play for the fans, too. I want to play for the foreign scene, I guess, in general. That's what kind of change for me personally. It changed the way I think."

Really good interview and video overall. I think it will just go well for Naniwa and he has the right mindset when it comes to practice and get better and he has to think about himself mostly and how much he can improve and how badly he wants this etc.

Yes as a progamer you have to play for the fans too of course. I'm not saying that i defend Naniwa and the decision he made in the GSL but at that time i can understand why he thought it was just no use playing that last game when it doesn't get him anywhere.

He understands that and i don't think he will do that ever again. I was thinking of that a lot of times and if i was Naniwa in that situation i would have gone some really crazy ass build just to provide entertainment for the fans instead of going in to the game with 100% mind of winning.

Anyways gl naniwa/johan!

Naniwa does not strike me as a mature person who has his heart in the right place, he gives me the impression of being bit of a devious person, and it's plain to see that it is other people who wants him to play for the fans and not a choice he made by him self. The problem with this is that if your motivation is not based on your fans but by your self alone, why on earth should you pretend that you are?

And there's nothing wrong with being motivated by your self alone, everything that has brought him to where he is now has by been his own determination, goals, and shit load of hard practice. Lazy fans do nothing but bringing out the popscorn and cola, to let them self be entertained by these hard working players, who gets trashed talked on daily basis if the fans do not think the player lives up to their expectations. And if you think fans buy tickets only to support the leagues and players alone, your naive.

The game which he just wanted to end was his choice and his choice alone, it just shows us that those kind of matches where there's nothing at stake, can be a complete waste of time.

In this specific case I think Naniwa should believe in him self and stop attempting to try apologise for wrongdoings, which he clearly doesn't think he did.

He talks about devotion and how he learned his lesson after GSL but he almost forfeited the matches in IEM Kiev. What can we say about Naniwa, what can we say...

It's not late to try a different approach, but the skill level at SC2 is so amazingly crazy that you just cant go with an undecided/to-be-tested dedication. You really need to put all your heart into it, and some madness :D

Good Luck.

ps. i won't mind to see Nestea drone rushing Naniwa for revenge ^^
