GSL May Code S Ro.32 Groups G+H Reports

Group G

Game 1@ Tal'Darim Altar
ST_Virus spawned at the bottom right corner while anyproPrime.WE was directly north of him at the top right. Both players went fast expand and it looked early on like it could go into a long macro game, but this wasn't so. ST_Virus would place a total of 5 barracks down and his first and final push would soon begin. After amassing over half a dozen Marines, ST_Virus sends a large group of SCVs to push along with his Marines and breaks into anypro's base with ease. anypro would lay down a few fairly well placed forcefields but it wasn't enough to stop ST_Virus' push. ST_Virus took game 1 in group G was relative ease as anypro provided very little fight in his defence of the push.

Game 2 @ Xel'Naga Fortress
The second game of the day started off pretty standard for both players TSL_Trickster opens up with a 3gate expand while oGsEnsnare opens up with a 3rax expand. Trickster amasses around a dozen Stalkers early on to pressure Ensnare's natural and does a pretty good job in doing so. Ensnare responded by trying multiple drops into Trickster's main and natural, but Trickster would have none of it. A well placed pylon gave Trickster near-perfect map control and he would be able to stop a few drops while also controlling the center tower. The final battle came when Ensnare moved out into the middle trying to gain map control but it is quickly met with the large Protoss forces of Trickster. A well placed forcefield wall would give the game to Trickster as Ensnare's army is slaughtered with their backs up against the forcefield wall.

Game 3 @ Tal'Darim Altar
The next game was Terran versus Terran played on Tal'Darim Altar between ST_Virus and oGsEnsnare. Virus spawned at the bottom left, directly south of Ensnare and opened up with a fast expansion. Ensnare would tech instead and go straight for cloaked Banshees. A considerable amount of Marines and SCVs were taken down by Virus to help close the gap in supply between the two players. Through out the entire game, both players would exchange drops into each others mains while a standoff of Siege Tanks and Marines were set up in the middle of the map. It seemed like the game was going to be at a standstill for a long time, but the game came to a quick end with the quick strategic moves of Virus.

virusvsensnare2.jpg

Virus made a drop into Ensnare's main mineral line and quickly unsieged his army in the middle and moved around Ensnare's sieged army. Distracted by the drop in his main Ensnare would not notice Virus' army in the middle moving away until it was too late. By the time Ensnare could react his army had already been cut off from his base and Virus was quickly decimating both Ensnare's army and natural expansion. A sly move by Virus gave him the win.

Game 4 @ Metalopolis
The fourth game of the day ended quickly as Trickster attempted a non-standard 3gate robo build that fails. anypro starts off with a standard 4gate and the rest is history. Trickster's build included a Warp Prism drop of two Stalkers and two Zealots, but they were no match for the forces that anypro had ready. Trickster would lose the game quite fast in an unimpressive fashion.

Game 5 @ Xel'Naga Fortress
One more match was required between the two Protoss players and this time it was on Xel'Naga Fortress. Both players opened the standard 4gate, but anypro would elect to build a Nexus after instead of pumping out units. However, he cancels this Nexus after he sees half a dozen of Trickster's Stalkers walk into the middle. anypro then techs and starts pumping out units, while Trickster expands and warps in two Dark Templars onto the map. These Dark Templars provided very little map control for Trickster as Ensnare had observers ready to defend. anypro would eventually move out and Trickster sneaks in a Dark Templar into anypro's base.

anyprovstrickster3.jpg

The Dark Templar does a bit of damage, but it was not enough to measure up to the damage that was about to laid on Trickster. anypro's push takes out Trickster's natural and even pushes Trickster all the way into his own main. Trickster's only hope was sniping anypro's only observer on the map and then warping in three Dark Templars to defend. Ensnare retreats with only a handful of Stalkers and both armies would sit at about even, but time and minerals was running out for both players. A final engagement in the middle of the map would give anypro a decisive lead as his army of Stalkers ripped into Trickster's smaller army. anypro would be the second player to advance out of the group stages along with ST_Virus.

Group H

Game 1 @ Metalopolis
The second group of the day started with ST_July and ST_Rain playing on Metalopolis. The players spawned in cross positions of each other and this meant that July was free to fast expand. Rain responds by going Hellion and Marauder. The game comes down to a push by Rain who goes all-in with a force of Hellions, Marauders and over a dozen SCVs to try to break July's defence. In his defence, a mass of Zerglings along with several Spine Crawlers help July keep Rain from breaking in as July teched to Mutalisks. Rain's push would fail and he had no choice by to GG after seeing July's Mutalisks enter the game.

Game 2 @ Terminus RE
The next match was between the last foreign hopeful of the tournament, Liquid'Huk versus oGsInCa on Terminus RE. Huk decides to go Dark Templar rush, while InCa goes robo tech which spells disaster for Huk. Huk's window of opportunity would open when InCa's observer leaves his base to scout, but just as Huk was about to run up InCa's ramp, InCa places a perfect forcefield down. This stops Huk's Dark Templars from entering InCa's base and buys InCa time to get his observer back. Without having his Dark Templars pay off, Huk would fall behind and it was a simple push for InCa to end the game.

hnice] Game three of Group H was between July and Huk and might have been one of the most exciting matches of the day. July opens with a fast expand and Huk responds with a 3gate expand on Crossfire. The entire match is very well played by both palyers. Huk makes the first move in attempting to apply early pressure and at one point almost looked like he could have taken the game right then and there. He pushes in with an array of tier 1 units almost breaking July's natural defence. He does eventually back off sensing that he may lose more units to an unbreakable defence. This gives July a certain amount of map control has speedlings and Roaches enter the game. Several times Huk seems like he wants to push out but watching July's forces move towards his base he moves back. <img src=

Huk does make a second push, but expected July to push into his base as he pushed out. Huk flirts with the idea of breaking July while defending with an ample amount of forces back home. However, he does retreat quite quickly after engaging July's defences and goes back home to defend. At this point of the game July has his signature units out on the field, Mutalisks. The Mutalisks take out a handful of Huk's Probes, but this also forces Huk to amass a formidable amount of Stalkers for the late game. Both armies would dance around in the middle trying to gain an edge over the other. July comes very close to losing his entire army as Huk was able to surround July's forces at one point. However, borrowed movement would allow most of July's Roaches to escape and fight another day, sadly not the same could be said for most of his Zerglings.

hukvsjuly3.jpg

As the game had seem to be tilted towards this since mid-game, a base trade began. Both forces raced to finish each others bases, but it was July's 3 bases against Huk's 2. Huk would escape with a few Probes to build elsewhere, but it was the last standing fortress of July that won July the game. The game was very close and was one of the best matches of the day as the last hope of the foreigners was on the brink of elimination.

Game 4 @ Crevasse
The next game was between oGsInCa and ST_Rain on Crevasse. The game went off to a much slower pace than the last game that had just ended. Both players take early expansions and prepare for a long game. InCa however tries to be sneaky and proxies two Stargates to mass Voidrays. Rain would attempt to move out at one point, but quickly retreats seeing that he couldn't walk up InCa's ramp without taking severe losses. Seeing Rain retreat, InCa makes his move and attacks. With a powerful force of 8 Voidrays and a large support of tier 1 units InCa charges in and loses in an amazingly anticlimatic fashion. InCa would make the mistake of clumping all his units together and two well placed EMPs taken down all the energy and shields of his entire army. Rain would just roll him over to an easy win, thus eliminating Huk.

Game 5 @ Terminus RE
After the Crevasse game, InCa and Rain were sent to a rematch on Terminus RE. After falling to a very disappointing game, InCa was very close to falling to Rain once again. Rain would push out with an army of Marines and Tanks and fail his first push, but his second push would take him to the brink of winning. It was a clear victory for Rain, so much so that he had let InCa rip his mineral line to shreds with Dark Templars, but InCa would not quit. He stayed in the game despite having his base being ravaged by Marines and Tanks. Ignoring the Dark Templars in his base was a huge mistake by Rain as the base trade turned out to be very effective.

rainvsinca2.jpg
Game over, right?

Fearing that InCa had a base elsewhere, which InCa did, Rain would retreat his men to secure a new base and stop the Dark Templar harass. In doing so Rain also left InCa's warpgates unpowered, but intact which would also come back to bite him in the end. Rain would end up with almost no SCVs and be forced to defend his own base before moving out, thus buying InCa much more time to rebuild his economy and army. In the end, InCa rebuilds a Zealot and High Templar army that takes out the remaining forces of Rain's Marine and Tank army thus winning him the game in an epic come back.
