I had the opportunity to ask MarineKing a few questions after his second place finish at the GSL World Championships.

As anyone who reads my weekly column knows, I’m a big fan of MarineKing. His creative and aggressive play is entertaining, but more than anything, I love how he wears his emotions on his sleeve. Just by watching his reactions after games you can tell that he’s fiercely competitive and very passionate about StarCraft II.

Below is the interview.

First of all, MarineKing, thank you for taking the time to answer some questions. I’m sure you’re very busy preparing for next season of the GSL and understand that your time is valuable.

MKP: It’s my pleasure as this is the first time for me to interview for foreign fans. I’m good to have this chance.

I want to first talk about your recent run at the World Championships.

In your series against oGsMC, you fell behind 0-2 but managed to come back and win. How did you stay focused and keep from panicking, especially in game three when he had void rays and zealots inside your base?

MKP: I did my best to prepare for the match against oGsMC at the World championships because I lost once as you know. So, I was rather eager to win when I fell behind 0:2. And I could focus on it and came up from behind. I kept my presence of mind and defended void rays and zealots inside my base. When I came to myself, I was seizing the chance to victory.

Against both oGsMC and IMMvp, you tried a thor rush, which unfortunately didn’t work either time. If you could play those games again, what would you do differently?

MKP: The thor rush is very useful to use vs. Protoss as a sudden single-use strategy. Personally, I feel sorry losing that game in vain as I made a mistake in early stage, not repairing the bunker against 1 zealot and 2 stalkers. But I will use the thor rush whenever I have a match against Protoss in the future.

I don’t mean to touch a sore subject, but what have you learned from your three finals losses that will make you a better player moving forward?

MKP: You never touched a sore subject, don’t worry. Rather, I’m proud of having 3 times of finals. The more I have final matches, the more earnest to win I become. So, I become enthusiastic more and more.

On a happier note, your games have been some of my favorite to watch. I’ll never forget your series against Kyrix in the round of eight at season two the GSL Open, particularly the first game on Shakuras Plateau. That was when I really became a fan. And of course, game three in your recent series against MC was amazing as well. What are some of your favorite games that you’ve played, or victories that you’re most proud of?

MKP: Thank you. :D

I also think it was the match against Kyrix in the round of 8 at season II the GSL open that I played most risky and nervously. And the match against oGsMC at the World Championship was hardest and happiest play I have played.

You’re obviously known best for you impressive marine control. What do you consider some of your strongest skills as a player?

MKP: I think it is my little strong point for me to control marines delicately compare to other players.

You’ve had a lot of success competing in the GSL and I know the schedule there is pretty demanding. But do you plan on competing in any major tournaments outside of Korea in the near future?

MKP: If I have a chance, I will participate Korean matches as well as overseas tournaments.

Looking toward the start of the next season of the GSL, you’re in a group with NaDa, Zenio, and Alicia. Do you have any thoughts or predictions about your group?

MKP: All of 3 players is top and it is hard to expect. Recently, I’m weak at tvt but NaDa is strong and I’m not sure I can win. For Zenio vs. Alicia, Alicia seems to win easily. Because Alicia is very good player and zvp is leaning to P.

You’re a very young player and most definitely have many years of gaming ahead of you. What are some of your goals for your StarCraft II career?

MKP: Of course, I want to be the best of SCII. But I also want to be the most popular and I want to remain long in fans’ memories.

To finished with, I want to get your thoughts on the foreign StarCraft II community. I know you haven’t had a chance to play against too many non-Korean players, but who are some of the best foreign players that you’re aware of?

MKP: I think dimaga and sen for zerg, jinro for terran, huk and whitera for protoss are as good as Korean players.

You have a big following outside of Korea. It seems like most people that I talk to are always rooting for you. Did you know that you have so many American and European fans? And is there anything you’d like to say to them?

MKP: I’m not good at English and I couldn’t realize the popularity when I visited foreign fan sites. But I think I should play better to show good games to the fans hearing many foreign fans are cheering me. And I love the foreign fans as much as Korean fans, or more.

In closing, I want to thank you again for your time. You’re one of my favorite players to watch and to write about, not just because of your incredible skill and unique style, but because it’s clear you have such a passion for the game and a fierce competitive spirit. Even when I watch your games from halfway around the world I appreciate the emotions you display after every series.

MKP: I really appreciate for your support and good messages once again.

Thank you.

Good luck next season, I know you’ll give us some more unforgettable matches!
