GOMTV StarCraft 2 Open Quarter Finals - Day 2 - Battle Report

GOMTV StarCraft 2 Open: Round of 8
Korea oGsZenio versus Korea NesTea @ Metalopolis
Zenio spawned at 12 o'clock with NesTea at the 3 o'clock position. Both players fast expand and double queen at the same time. Both players play very similar builds but deviate a slightly in timing. Zenio would fall slightly behind when he loses his scouting Overlord to one of NesTea's Queens.

While NesTea massed up a Roach and Zergling army, Zenio opts for a second expansion at the 10 o'clock position and settles with a pure Roach defence. Just as Zenio places his third Hatchery down, NesTea would storm up towards Zenio's base with an army of Roaches and Zerglings.

Zenio defends against NesTea

Just as NesTea is at his doorstep, Zenio drops down two Spine Crawlers in an attempt to bolster his defences. NesTea would be able to do some considerable damage to Zenio's forces with his attack. Taking out both of Zenio's Queens, NesTea would push Zenio's economy further back. The third hatchery would help Zenio make up for the missing Queens, but it was not enough.

Despite having scouted the Lair of NesTea's ahead of time, Zenio would not get any anti-air defences. And after providing constant pressure against Zenio and forcing Zenio to produce more Zerglings and Roaches, NesTea would tech switch to Mutalisks and end the game.

Korea oGsZenio versus Korea NesTea @ Scrap Station
NesTea opens up with a fast Lair and techs towards Mutalisks. Zenio would scout this out and attempt to apply early Baneling pressure after having scouted out the quick Lair with his Zerglings. After killing off the scouting Zerglings, NesTea proceeds to build up his defences.

Nothing fights off a mass of Banelings and Zerglings easier than five Spine Crawlers at your ramp. Zenio scouts out the Crawlers spread across NesTea's ramp and quickly cancels his Banelings that were morphing in. Zenio would then sacrifice a few Zerglings in an attempt to harass and scout out NesTea's base.

It's not Easy to Break, by Five for Defending

After seeing NesTea's Spire being built, Zenio decides to go Infestors with burrow tech. This sneaky maneuver, which is quite popular on the Korean servers right now, was stopped by a lone Overseer from NesTea. The Infestors are then forced to go back to Zenio's base as he awaited for NesTea's final push.

Not only was he already behind in an expansion, but Zenio was also behind in Drone count. There was no stopping the inevitable push by NesTea who had a large army of Roaches as well as a few Mutalisks. Zenio would lose game 2 as his Infestors would fail to provide enough of an advantage for him to hold up against NesTea's forces.

Korea oGsZenio versus Korea NesTea @ Xel'Naga Caverns
Being down 2-0 going into the third set, Zenio goes for a quick Baneling rush. Skipping a Queen and Zergling speed, Zenio goes straight for a Baneling nest. NesTea would see this coming but is unable to stop the push with his Queen at his ramp. Zenio's Banelings would run past the Queen while Zerglings would stay behind to take it out. After a short micro battle, it seemed like Zenio would take the game, but Roaches would pop out for NesTea and fend off just enough Zerglings for a counter.

NesTea's forces sneak in past Zenio's defences

NesTea's counter would prove to be a game equalizer as he sneaks past Zenio's defences and into his mineral lines. From behind the mineral line, NesTea would snipe off a few drones and pause Zenio's mining for quite a while. During this time Zenio would even get a Queen sniped off by Roaches.

After the game was back to equal, NesTea would shine. His tech to Mutalisks was a lot faster and so was his expansion. Despite starting the game aggressively and almost taking the game within the first 10 minutes, Zenio would start to fall behind economically. He had slower tech, less Drones, and most importantly, less Mutalisks. Eventually, NesTea overwhelms Zenio with his Mutalisk army and takes the game and match.

GOMTV StarCraft 2 Open: Round of 8
Korea SlayerSBoxeR versus Korea oGsNaDa @ Metalopolis
BoxeR would spawn at the 3 o'clock position and NaDa at the 9 o'clock. NaDa opts for a quick expand while BoxeR techs up to Banshee. BoxeR doesn't actually know NaDa had fast expanded as NaDa denies BoxeR's scouting SCV.

BoxeR continues with his Banshee tech and would send out a Banshee with cloak tech to harass. However, this harass would be cut short as NaDa's large Marine forces closes in on the Banshee quite quickly. After taking down a second Banshee from BoxeR, NaDa would move out with a large Marine force with several Marauders. Just as this force moves across the map, a third and single Banshee would do the same for BoxeR.

NaDa moves in for the kill

This one single Banshee would prove key to BoxeR's longevity in this game. As NaDa moves in for the kill on BoxeR, BoxeR is barely able to defend against this push, being forced to send in SCVs as well to push back NaDa's forces. After sustaining such heavy losses, BoxeR's only saving grace is the Banshee that he had sneaked into NaDa's base during the attack from NaDa. This Banshee alone had helped keep the game fairly even in BoxeR's favour.

After NaDa's first assault on BoxeR's base, both players played a careful dancing game with each other as both tried to gain the upper hand in positioning. At one point, NaDa was in the lead, but lost it to BoxeR when he was overly aggressive with his Marines. Then he would take the lead over BoxeR again by using his Medivacs to ferry his army into BoxeR's base. Although he never hit any of BoxeR's minerals, NaDa did take out a significant number of production facilities.

BoxeR would then attempt to trade bases with NaDa, but it was no use. NaDa was much quick at destroying BoxeR's base while BoxeR struggled to destroy enough of NaDa's base to stay in the game. Eventually, BoxeR would be left with no Command Centers and NaDa would have one to take the game.

Korea SlayerSBoxeR versus Korea oGsNaDa @ Xel'Naga Caverns
Both players would tech to Banshees for this second game, but BoxeR would opt for early Marines while NaDa decides for a quick Reaper scout. Trying to deviate even more from each other's builds, NaDa would decide to build a Raven as well. BoxeR on the other hand makes a Viking which defends against NaDa's Banshee a lot better than NaDa can defend against BoxeR's.

Out of the bushes, BoxeR pounces on his prey

Both players would be fairly evenly matched the entire game, but BoxeR would eventually make a key move in taking the game handily. Both players would dance around the middle constantly pushing back and forth in a battle for territorial dominance, but BoxeR would make a run for the back door to NaDa's natural expansion. Catching NaDa out of position, BoxeR would take out NaDa's expansion along with a majority of his forces. NaDa would attempt a counter-push, but it was no use as BoxeR tied up the match.

Korea SlayerSBoxeR versus Korea oGsNaDa @ Shakuras Plateau
After losing his first game of the match, NaDa takes off his jacket in preparation for the third. NaDa showed much of the aggression that he intended when he took of his jacket. While BoxeR went for a Banshee once again, NaDa would decide for an aggressive blue-flame Hellion drop into BoxeR's base. This was super effective as he took out a large amount of BoxeR's SCVs while BoxeR's Banshee would be forced to work for its kills.

Burn baby, burn

BoxeR's Banshee would return home while the first of several Thors for NaDa would come out. After two Thors come out for NaDa he would decide to push. Possibly feeling that he was ahead after his Hellion drop NaDa would commit to the attack while BoxeR's Banshee would return to NaDa's base to take out more SCVs.

Overwhelmed by SCVs, the first Thor falls

BoxeR would defend against NaDa's push quite easily with the help of his SCVs. Rather than using a Thor to defend against the Banshee, NaDa would send his third Thor towards BoxeR's base to continue the pressure. This would be ineffective as BoxeR was just too well defended with Tanks. NaDa would drop the third set.

Korea SlayerSBoxeR versus Korea oGsNaDa @ Delta Quadrant
BoxeR was now one win away from advancing to the semi-finals and NaDa was finally feeling the pressure. Maybe deciding that he needed a radical strategy to bring him back into the match, NaDa goes for a quick Ghost tech. BoxeR would scout out an early Barracks with tech lab attached, but still does not expect a Ghost to come out.

Eventually, following his past strategies, BoxeR would have a Banshee come out to harass NaDa's base. BoxeR would finally see the Ghosts that NaDa has been pumping out and just barely escapes with his Banshee in full red health. NaDa would then move out and proceed to set up a contain on BoxeR.

boxervsnada5.jpg
Ghost's going for the kill shot

Several times NaDa would poke at BoxeR. Showing great Ghost usage, NaDa attacks with several Marauders and three Ghosts, taking out a Tank and several Marines and Marauders. NaDa's army was actually out numbered, but with a slew of snipes from his Ghosts he would take out chunk of BoxeR's army.

Despite having map control and a strong contain on BoxeR, NaDa could not move up against BoxeR. It was then that he had tried several Nukes to push BoxeR back to gain more ground. But he was unable to replicate what Liquid'TLO had done earlier in the GSL tournaments. He would waste several Nukes without ever gaining a single step against his opponent.

boxervsnada6.jpg
NaDa's Marines are late to the party

Eventually NaDa would cave. BoxeR would once again catch NaDa off guard as he moved out with his Marauder, Tank and Viking army out to face NaDa's contain. Although NaDa had several Tanks in front to contain, his larger Marine army was still way behind his contain. By the time NaDa's larger Marine forces could join the battle, BoxeR had already taken out a significant amount of NaDa's tanks. BoxeR on the other hand, had almost half a dozen Tanks left which seiged and turned NaDa's Marines into dust.
At this point, not even having a superior SCV count and a second expansion could help NaDa come back. His entire army was devastated when BoxeR moved out. Despite having a strong early and mid-game, NaDa would lose his containment in the end and be knocked out.

NOTES:
-Neither SlayerSBoxeR or NesTea have a team or clan going into the final four
-Many people who watched the live stream, including premium paid customers, were without a stream as the games took place on day 2. Those who did get a stream, reported lots of lag.
-In game four of BoxeR vs NaDa, BoxeR had to pause in the first few minutes of the game due to technical problems with his mouse, they game was later resumed
