OGN not to broadcast Global StarCraft 2 League

Posted by Karsten "pYRo" Haendly 1 year ago
GomTV announced on 3rd September 2010 that there will only be pay-per-view TV for this season's Global StarCraft 2 League as OGN will not broadcast the games.

Although OnGameNet and GomTV reached an agreement last month, latest information say that OnGameNet will not stream the games of Global StarCraft 2 League for as of yet unknown reasons.

Yesterday, GosuGamers.net reported that Gretech - the company behind GomTV - and KeSPA did not reach an agreement for the continuation of the Proleague. As OnGameNet is a part of KeSPA it might be possible that they canceled the contract with GomTV.

GomTV announced earlier this week that spectators would need to buy a ticket to watch the provided stream. A season ticket costs $19.95, whereas a VOD ticket, which allows you to watch the VODs during the season, makes $29.95.

I hope you realize the hypocrisy of your post - accusing people of greed when you yourself are so cheap you pirated the game. Hilarious.

OnT:

Nothing worth having is free, this is pretty much the founding rule of capitalism, don't like it? - move to Cuba or North Korea.

From what I understand, Gretech/GOMTV got the broadcasting license for SC2 in South Korea and also a big chunk of venture capital where put into Gretech/GOMTV by Blizzard - hence, the big prize pool, for example.

Now, naturally, Blizzard expects their investment to eventually return some profit, this is the sole point of a venture capital and the profit from venture capital usually goes into further developing old and new products or making a profit payout to their owners. Make no mistake about it, all companies have an obligation towards their shareholders or owners. Unless it's a non-profit organization. Blizzard and GOMTV are no charity organizations, and if they where, the charity wouldn't be for angry internet nerds.

So, how can one make money from a e-sport tournament?
Plan A is usually to get sponsors and sell advertising. Because of the shitstorm surrounding KeSPA/Gretech/Blizzard the whole situation is pretty unstable, alas, it's hard to entice sponsors.

Plan B would most likely be what they are doing now - let the people who want to watch it pay for it. Supply and demand.

Organizing this kind of stuff costs a lot of money - additional to the huge prize pool. And if it wasn't for the huge prize pool - it wouldn't be a high profile tournament. The money has to come from somewhere, people don't work for free and companys who doesn't gain revenue from their products/IP will eventually face bankruptcy.

This is all elementary economics.

Now, I do have some problems with the GOMTV PPV, first off, 500K is nowhere near high quality video. Second, why the hell is there no single subscription for both streams and VODs? Third, streaming stuff half way around the globe is not exactly good QA.

if they wouldve made it only pay per view they would lose their sponsors, because if they need as much viewers as they can get for their sponsors

I would like just to greet all the Norwegians that stated how the community is broken that is not willing to pay such a "reasonable" amount of money to watch one sc2 tournament. By this logic I guess that you had to pay like 90$ to watch all the games at football World Cup in South Africa, right?

I wonder how people will react when they gonna be forced to pay for chat channels, clan making, tournament tools ect. Becasue it will come 100% we got now payed account name change. So if your not a wow player you will have to get used to this... No monthly fee, but pay for basic battle.net features...

What I think is worst about all this is thats it's not good for the e-sports scene, when the scene is still young and far from mainstream the only way to get it growing is to make people who arent familiar to take part someway and maybe just somehow step over a stream and then find this interesting, I dont think Pay per view is a good solution in the long run when its still so young. make a couple of seasons with free stream and when the publicity is great you could start offering pay per view or premium packages. Thats my advice and my point of view.

The game is new, the scene, esports etc is not.. we're past the point of using "its still young" excuse, it makes sense for them to charge to see this event and honestly the only complaint they should be hearing is "i dont have the money" not its a bad idea, not that im going to boycott it etc bla bla you're the people that is wrong with e-sports, you're the ones sitting there trying make esports mainstream by giving yourselves special treatment, events that follow through with there payments, proper advertising campaigns, real business is what esports needs, either pay up and support a more professional event or pirate it and shut your mouths and dont whinge about esports not being mainstream.
