$100 Million Figure Wrong, WSJ Corrects

Posted by Roy "Phantom[xz]" Kwan 1 year ago
The Wall Street Journal has recently made a correction to a previous article they published in regards to the development cost of StarCraft II that was false.

An article published by the Wall Street Journal several weeks ago reported that StarCraft 2 had cost over $100 million to develop. They have since corrected this mistake and stated that the $100 million figure was actually in reference to the development cost of World of WarCraft.

In response to this article, Blizzard reps have stated that Blizzard has never disclosed the development cost of StarCraft II and has no plans to do so.

Fail much?

Anyways I wouldn't be shocked if the actual figure was close to this, with all the marketing and whatnot (a SC2 PLANE!?).

#2 development cost tho! ;D

marketing cost however, I don't know, maybe it would reach to about $50 million, but a lot of the advertising and hype can be made just off of youtube and other gaming websites. Free advertising.

i think most expensive piece of advertising they might of spent in North America was buying time to put the SC2 ad in during the NBA championships. other than that, I can't see the syfy network costing a lot to have their ads play on there.

as for the planes, yah that was insane lol, but it's not as hard to imagine as Korean Air probably has a large interest in SC considering they sponsored and are still sponsoring the OSL.

I see tons of posters and stuff around tho, so who knows...but $100 million? I've seen a lot more advertising come out of a $100 million.

afaik the plane thing was done by the ceo of the airline.
his daughter is like the most hardcore sc2 fan and he decided it was a good idea.

might be blizz has its fingers in there, but there was more to the story.

#19 um.. Not sure if you read the same article but the WSJ didn't not "guess" the development costs for sc2. Go back and re-read the above article plz. And what #1 said, although it is an over-exaduration, is mostly true. The money that Blizzard made off of WoW was enough for them all tonretire and never work again. In fact that's what killed the small business that was Blizzard and spawned this big coorperation that let wc3 die out.

22: you have absolutely no clue how many people you have to hire for the whole 7 years of development, and thats only people.. what about the other stuff?
