Illegal Gambling Rampant in Korean Pro-Scene

Posted by Roy "Phantom[xz]" Kwan 2 years ago
Articles confirming rumors of illegal gambling and match rigging of professional StarCraft matches have been recently posted by a user at TeamLiquid.net.

The first news of this hit the foreign community when United States Dan "Rekrul" Schreiber posted a video blog regarding the rumors. He could not provide any solid evidence on the scandal, but he reassured us that he had a reliable source. A day later, his rumors would be confirmed.

Fomos.kr had written several articles on the issue, one of which says that the player rigging began in 2008, while the illegal betting stretched as far back as 2006. Several other articles are summarized by the TL.net poster; these articles cover issues from how the scandal began to when the e-sports organizers found out and what their response to it was.

There are several high-level pro-gamers involved, one of which is Korea Ma "Savior" Jae Yoon. In his blog, Rekrul states that Savior is rumored to have accumulated around $2,000,000 from the illegal betting and match rigging, while on average each player would receive about $4500 from throwing each game. Retired pro-gamers as well as coaches and a commentator are also said to be involved.

Illegal gambling and match rigging is nothing new in competitive sports. Scandals such as this have gone on in every popular professional sport in the world. Whether this further legitimizes StarCraft is a sport or not, controversy and scandals such as this one can only bring question and doubt into the integrity of the sport.

well, that makes sense. 2 many players lost games in a very stupid fashion taht even a D- player would think is crazy.
i guess in some way this wont SHOCK many ppl, but the fact is it makes starcraft even more unstable, especially after so many maphacks bots and god knows what circulating the internet. Anyway im guessing ppl will keep playing starcraft just for the fun of it, no matter how bad things go, there will always be ppl who will want to play it more or less competivly.
Also dont forget 1 thing, many of these gamers arent paied astronomical figures like, lets say Cristiano Ronaldo in the Real Madrid. THey "work" over 12h a day, live in a small home full of testosterone (except STX, lucky bastards having Tossgirl), and 0 life.
In that case, im guessing even id take onto that to get money.

Really disappointing. It's not overly surprising right now, but I think once more names are released it will be.

Will these players/coaches/casters face jailtime?

If so, this is a good news, we will be having a new Pro-team, prisoner's ACE force. Go and win next Proleague!

down right pathetic and sad.
these players / coaches/ kespa officials should be faced with jail time.
no different then throwing games in Champions league, NBA , MLB , NHL or the NFL.

the money isnt quite the same but should still be disciplined to some extent.

#27 oo_xerox 2 years ago
@25, Soooooo?does that man its ok to fuck with the audience? OF COURSE NOT, people will always try to cheat, THATS WHAT THE GODDAMNED RULES ARE FOR, to avoid that, you cant just come 2 years later and say HEYYY! y know wat? Savior lost on purpose! and just want people to say "aw man its ok i would have done the same" MAN WTF? ITS WRONG , maybe not pathetic but its stupid and show that money can indeed buy everything...so you cut the shit off. If they want more money organize something or whatever to make kespa look like an ass and make them pay more or W/E, but dont justify your cheating, this is very similir to the TSL thing
"I cheated because no one will play with me!"
"Aaaaw its ok ma.....oh no wait a minute, your FUCKING BANNED FROM OUR EVENTS!"

I don't know if all of this is true or not, but it's really weird why this information would leak just now when Blizzard want so much to take over the Korean scene.
Think about it.

For as long as no one gets banned from playing pro, or no one actually gets punished in any possible way, I continue thinking this is just another way to try and weaken both Kespa and Korean pro-scene in attempt to get more people to SC2, mostly Koreans in this matter.

Maybe I'm wrong though...
In that case, well, what can be said. All the best players are on this list.
If they are all guilty, that would most certainly destroy big deal of Korean scene.
