GamesCom 2010 Memories 1
Created 7th February 2012 12:45 (Updated: 7th February 2012 13:05)

Hey fellow GosuGamers

This is more a blog about the experience you can have being at such an event.

I am not sure why I am writing this but I just had a trip down memory lane and thought of my and Lasse (Enrons) trip to GamesCom 2010. I am just basically gonna write what happened those days and I hope you guys will enjoy it.

Day 1 Friday

My flight to Cologne took off about midday if I remember correctly and the plane was pretty empty so in the end I could basically choose to sit wherever I wanted. I took a seat in the very rear of the plane, plugged in my earphones, put on "A State Of Trance" on my iPod and just laid back and enjoyed the flight.

When I arrived at the airport in Cologne I had still some time to kill before Lasse was arriving so I sat down drank a coffee and ate something.

I had to wait about 2 hours for Lasse to get there and when he came we went down to the train station and went to our hotel. The hotel to be honest wasn't the best. Just a week before GamesCom Lasse, Raistlin, poGDI and me were at the BlizzCon European Invitational and we were staying at a really nice hotel which was like was 5min away from the convention center by foot where the regionals where held. This time the hotel was at one of the busiest streets in Cologne which we really started to feel by night and especially the later days when we tried to sleep as exhausted as we were.

Not much was happening the first evening and night, because we were just setting up our coverage in the hotel room and that was it.

Day 2 Saturday

This is the the day the actual event started. First off all it took us some time to get to the actual venue, since exactly at that time there was no train going tehre from where we were staying, but we needed to take a bus that took about 30 minutes to get there.

Arriving at the venue we went straight to the Press Center to get our passes, but a problem arose when we claimed those. You see Lasse was our Editor in Chief back in the day so the girl at the desk saw no problem in giving him a press pass, but on our site I was the Event Team leader back in the day and I basically went with him to help him covering the whole event and the girl was too stubborn to give me one because in her own words " I had no purpose in being there".

Well lucky us we had the phone number of the community manager of ESL ( diejule I am looking at you <3 ), so I called her instantly and asked her what we can do about this. What basically happened now is that I got an exhibitor pass from ESL which actually is way better than the press pass, because it granted me access to everything happening at the GamesCom.

Eitherway we started setting up our computers and everything so we could start with the coverage. Now the problem basically was. that the press area was on the site where the actual games where happening so you could either watch them or sit in the press area and cover stuff. What we basically did is that I took the camera and started making pictures and get the results and everything and Lasse sat in the press area and wrote news. This is basically how the first day went. It was exshausting to say the least, but not as exhausting as the days to follow.

That exact evening when the games finished the guys from teamliquid had a small meet up set up in a small Mexican restaurant with all the players and some fans and some of the people working for ESL. We were about 30 people in the end and ofcourse it was a fun time sitting around with a lot of those guys you know from the internet for several years already. The food was really good, but well since we were that many it took the kitchen some time to get the food out.

Here is a little video from that evening that our swedish friends from rakaka.se made and YES me and Lasse are also in it.

Now here are some fun facts that happened AFTER the restauraunt. I am gonna do this bullet point style and with no names attached.

- We lost several people after the restaurant, some going to another bar and some going to a club within the biggest, let's be blunt, whorehouse in Germany :D
- One of the players left his Keyboard at exactly that whorehouse.
- That person never went back to get his keyboard again.
- There were also people leaving the club and going upstairs where the "fun" happens.
- Now the other group leaving the second bar and going home LOST several people on the way. (Maybe due to alcohol consumption ( No one knows :D )

I've probably forgotten some gems from that night and I am sorry for that.

Now here are some pictures from the restaurant and the meet up.

All credits go to Iopper over from TL.net who took them

Hope you liked this and I'll write about Sunday tomorrow and stuff I forgot and rememebr by then :)

BlizzCon EU (Arrival)
Created 7th August 2010 14:36 (Updated: 7th August 2010 15:26)

Friday 6th of August:

So I basically got up at 9:30 on that Friday to pack my stuff and get to the Airport in time to catch my plane to Cologne.
I landed 4 hours earlier than the other guys I was going to the Event with.
I tried to kill some time at the airport with drinking a lot of coffee and just watching the people leaving and arriving at the airport.

At 18:30 all the other guys landed and we got to know each other a little while taking the cab ride to the Hotel we where staying in.
The Hotel is in the middle of the city and we only have a 5-10 minute walk to the actual venue where the Invitational takes place.

The first evening we just went to a restaurant to get something to eat and to talk a little about the site and prior experiences we had. The actually asked for my ID when I ordered a beer and you need to be 16 in Germany to be able to drink beer so I was kinda surprised I had to show my ID. (We had a good laugh out of that and even people sitting at the table next to us had to laugh)

So we basically just set stuff up for the event that evening and tried to get to bed as early as possible ( in the end 2 o'clock :P)

Right now I am sitting in the press room at the event and I'll write a blog tomorrow about the stuff that happened today.

I hope you liked my first blog entry :)

Talk to you guys tomorrow!

Regards,

Marko 'marCoon' Karacic
