Map Tempering

[s]maps[/s]

They have recently published in the Korean WCG portal the results of wins in the respective WCG maps. It already suggests an imbalance when it comes to the map Estrella: Zerg users seem to be at a disadvantage.

sword1.jpgLike most already know, the WCG maps are the following: Estrella, Gaia, Paranoid Android, & Azalea. The small study is definitively not statistically significant yet, but it does raise some eye brows and may very will end up being so. The more this game is played the deeper we get into the nitty-gritty of all its aspects.

Azalea

Gaia
Protoss - 33% Protoss - 28%
Terran - 37% Terran - 37%
Zerg - 30% Zerg - 34%

Estrella

Paranoid Android
Protoss - 38% Protoss - 34%
Terran - 45% Terran - 37%
Zerg 17% Zerg - 30%

This does support what many pro-gamers have been insisting for quite sometime now: WCG should not use poorly tested maps, and no not even with preliminaries. We would also like to introduce a new term for all melee map makers out there: maps need to be battle tempered for balance, just like a hot sword, they need to be beat up good until they are tempered.

Before a map can end up being part of any WCG event it should at least have been thoroughly tested in the competitive arena by enough players and enough games to make the balance issue statistically significant. No map maker, however good he is, can be sure every time his map is adequately balanced. The only way to do this is battle temper it.

This discrepancy has more than one Zerg pro-gamer unhappy. The other maps in general are showing pretty even results. However, regardless the discrepancy, sometimes the "balance" itself changes as the players learn the map in greater detail, it is rare but it does happen. A map that intially can favor one race - after it is widely used can end up favoring another - due to tactical advatanges favoring one race over another. More the reason to test them for a long time before letting it become part of WCG.
