A new version of a very old program has been released by Hsmoke, called Random Map Selector 3.0. Features include a search function for maps, a function that permits you to choose maps by the number of map players it allows and a random map selection.
Before TraveltoAuir made his program BWMap picker v1.00 B for Windows, he approached me with the idea about such a project for some feedback, whether it was worth making. My response was a little biased since there is nothing I like more than playing a random unknown map with friends at night against random unknown pubs. In a way it was the way of Op Entropy for many years, our thing, or so we liked to believe at least.
Of course I thought the idea was great and he suggested the name Random Map Selector. This is when something toggled loose deep in my memory. I told Steven that I was sure I had seen and tried a similar program with such a name but that it was very old and that I would try to find the old program. In the meantime he went off to make the program.
By the time I found the old program hidden in an old Russian site, Steven had already finished the program and offered me to beta test it. It worked like a charm. Digging through the old program we found out the maker's name was Hsmoke. That is why TraveltoAuir’s program ended up with a different name and also why there is a mention of Hsmoke in the credits of the program, even though Steven had independently come up with the same idea. We thought it be only fair to give history respect and due credit.
Well the story does not end here, lo and behold guess who contacted me a week ago? Hsmoke himself. We had a long chat where I asked him about his old program and Starcraft chit chat. His name is Francisco Nicholls and he is from Venezuela. He had quit playing Starcraft a long time ago but he explained to me that he has started playing Starcraft again and started working on his program again which he asked me to beta-test.
