Does anyone miss Shield Batteries? (1245 reads, 8 replies, 6 months ago)
I was thinking about how much this really changes Protoss, since they totally removed this option from your tech tree.

I realize they actually weren't used very often, probably not as often as they should have been, in the pro games, but they were an extremely under-estimated option for the protoss at various stages of the game.

I used them heavily in broodwar in the campaigns and in handicap matches against the computer.

I also found that they could be instrumental in a rush defense, and served an excellent role that cannons or just one more zealot simply could not fill.

This part of the protoss arsenal is gone, even though Zerg and Terran units are so much more cost-effective than they were in Broodwar. Marines got 37% stronger, Marauders are a mini-tank for half the cost and similar stats....but protoss got weaker zealots, an inferior dragoon (blink does NOT make up for the weaker stats most of the time,) lost the shield battery, and Psionic Storm was cut to 2/3rds damage and a smaller AoE..

Then there's Roaches: An organic Zerg Vulture with twice the stats and 2 extra armor for the same minerals cost...

For some reason, they absolutely nerfed the hell out of protoss early game, AND doubled up Terran and Zerg early game...

Hmmm I feel like there is no need for it in SC2.

The shields go up a lot faster than in BW anyways. I might be wrong about that though?

I think we are nearing a good balance overall for all 3 races.

#1 Well, it works differently from SC BW. In SC BW shield regeneration was like Zerg's hit point regeneration, where in SC2 it regenerate really fast, but only out of combat. I like it more in SC2 since it encourages more microing.
