Did anyone find the Merc Compound useless on Brutal difficulty?

I mean, its starts with the merc marines available automatically,s o I used those anyway, but I found spending the bonus money on the permanent upgrades on normal units to be much more useful.

I tried the brutal difficulty with unlocking the entire merc compound, and it was impossible (for me anyway,) because the mercs just aren't good enough to make up for the upgrades the other units would have had.

Then, at the end of the game in the last level, there's so much crap happening simultaneously that one or two hero units doesn't really seem to matter, and you still have to spend your minerals and gas to summon them anyway...There seems to be no real advantage to using the Mercs as opposed to the permanent upgrades..

The only time I used merc compound was if I was floating a lot of minerals or if I was attacked and army was out of position etc..

Mercs rocks, their cost for stats is better than the original units and they benefit from the permanent upgrades. If you play all missions you can afford to do both, since some of the permanent upgrades are pretty useless (like BC, Thor, Wraith and Medivacs)

In the end it's just all a matter of personal taste and preferences, but they are worth it imo, hiring them in the first place is pretty cheap.
