Should i work on my APM? (4766 reads, 12 replies, 1 year ago)
Okay guys first off thanks for reading

okay now to the point. Day9 states to do what you gotta do you need about 40 APM, i can do that no problem, im very comfortable with such. I can however average 100 apm, while meantaining the same level of play i would as if i was only using 45 apm. So should I practise using my APM at 100, or continue to play at 45 APM. I am more relaxed while using less APM, but i also feel like im just being lazy, and less forcused, i tend to get supplie blocked at lower apm, but i find its easy going fast, cause i see everything, because my screan is going all over the place. This is just my Macro however, My Apm obviously drops while Micro managing back to 45-60 depends on how everything goes, but i do however try maining my macro, 95% of the time, Macro = win, micro = lose.

avr apm 95-100 its not bad. U can play diamond with it but if u want to become very good u need even higher. 45 amp its just to low to be able to macro good and still control your army.

Work on your game first, and your apm will steadily increase. APM is not everything, and as you work improve on your game your apm will increase as needed naturally (especially in SC2 where APM is much less important that SC1). I've played with guys from BW like m18m and tt1 who are incredibly skilled and yet average under 170 BW apm (this is very slow at the top of BW, SC2 charts apm differently so if you are 170 SC2 apm thats pretty damn fast). All the emphasis on APM is ridiculous, I've seen 350 APM players that don't understand the basics to the game becasue they just try to get faster mechanically.

That being said, if you think you can play just as well, increasing APM won't HURT you, just for most players their time would be better spent doing other things.

Ill upload a replay as soon as i can, to show you. and to all who are interested. My apm to me matters, but at the same time, i need to focus on much other things in my game play. Micro, is also key. I lose most games in Bronze, so i play vs Computers a lot, mostly medium, I cannot beat hard terran yet. Then again, in this video, i wanted to do a bai ling rush, but should have gone mass roaches, ill post a link to the video as soon as its up.

EDIT: this is a short 300 minute clip playing 4x speed, just showing, my APM

You had 110 sc2 apm, wich is about 150 apm or smth. This is enough, you dont need to focus on your apm, just try to play as good as possible and your apm will get high later on. I had about 120 apm in the beginning now I have about 220-250 apm, and it increased without me noticing it. Just work on your gameplay and you'll find more stuff to do and your apm will increase.

from what i saw, work on your strategy, u can improve a lot in your build. My advice is go download some platinum/diamond replays and try to improve your build i havent play a single game with zerg but i am sure u need both gas if u go lair and bainlings. Your apm is high for bronze player i have same apm at diamond.

It is a good thing to spam more since it warms you up and your fingers will automatically continue to micro/macro whilst you're thinking your strategy.

APM is overrated since precision clicking is much important. But spamming is good for noobs to warm their hand speeds up. Once you've practiced enough handspeed you can macro much better in the late game.

If you watched day9 daily you would also heard that day9 mention that apm is memory. Everyone can sit and spam the hell out of they keyboard that is not the point. Usless apm is just a pain in the ass by that i mean you shud know what to do have a gamplan depending on matchup and map. There is something called qualtiy apm vs inquality apm. Now the progamers /any solid good player who has 100+apm uses it not for the purpose of spam but to stay active (not get slow) so they can follow up with their gameplan more solid. Its all about a gameplan then to perfect it you can spam more to make your brain stay more alert.

You cant just spam the hell for the sake of it that way you will only spend time spaming and lose focus on the actual game. Try to implent a gameplan and then you can spam if you feel like it to stay more alert.

I shud mention i have around 70apm and i beat players with 300apm. I shud also mention im only 800diamond while i beat 1900diamond players.

I think that if you can have 110 apm you're fine. But since you say that you're at the bronze level. I suggest working on things like build orders, unit compositions and just general gameplay to improve your game before worrying about things like micro/apm. Sure it's nice to have a high apm, its nice to be able to fight every fight while pumping out units but the most important thing is to know what type of game you're going to play every game. what type of units you are going to build and to constantly keep tabs on your opponent. If you perfect all these things then eventually your apm will raise to the level it has to be.

I have been working on my 2 gate/robo build, it seems to be working, since i have won 10 games in a row, my apm isnt great, but i think if i hot key a few warpgates and mass units/ make probes and pylons i will greatly increase my overall game play, APM included, thank you to all who have responded, again my youtube channel is http://www.youtube.com/user/BrokenStarcraft2?feature=mhum i have many videos of my playing, u can see my APM, and such, comment on my videos, tell me what i should be doing, i feel like i have the basic understanding of what to do, but then again, i might not.

In your video you were just spamming while your units were doing nothing. I think you should stop trying to force yourself to spam because spamming useless actions will not make you faster. Instead, try to do as many useful things as possible (e.g. positioning overlords and scouting with zerglings in the video). The number in which you should be interested is your APM when every action has a purpose. The only reason to spam at the beginning of the game is to fill in actions when there are not enough useful things to do to maintain that APM.
