Possibly Fix for the "Zerg Problem" (1101 reads, 3 replies, 1 year ago)
Let me just start off and say that I am a Random player, but am currently steering toward Terran and Protoss as my main. The main reason I am doing this is because Zerg is mechanically the hardest race. In my opinion, to become very good at Zerg, it is important to play a lot. Playing a lot is the best way to get good mechanics which is the essence to making you a good Zerg player. Unfortunately I don't have the time for that, so I've chosen to play as Protoss and Terran since it's easier to master their mechanics.

I feel that there are a lot of players that don't choose Zerg for this reason. I know that many people claim that Zerg is the weakest race, but I believe the game is balanced. The way I see it, Zerg is balanced when they are used to their fullest potential. Unfortunately for a lot of people, it takes tremendous amounts of skill to play Zerg at its fullest potential, so very few are successful.

So the question is, do we make Terran/Protoss mechanics more difficult? or do we make Zerg mechanics easier?

Many people are always making suggestions to change how Mules work in order to make it take more skill to use and punish people more for slacking off on Muling.

On the other hand, I rarely see discussion about making Zerg mechanics easier.

Early in the beta it used to be possible to use Chronoboost without having to click on the structure. It used to be possible to use Chronoboost on the selected units/buildings bar. This made it possible to Chronoboost buildings without having to change screens. I didn't play Zerg at the time, but I assume that also meant that Zerg players could use Spawn Larva without having to change screens to each Hatchery.

If Blizzard brought this mechanic back into the game, it would make Spawn Larva a 1000 times easier. If this was possible, it would be possible to your Queens and your Hatcheries in one hotkey and be able to Spawn Larva without having to change screens. This would make harassing/micro'ing and spreading Creep Tumors a lot easier since you wouldn't have to change your screen every 30 seconds to Spawn Larva.

The one thing I worry about this is, whether it's a good idea to "dumb" the game down. I remember a lot of people coming from Brood War claiming that Blizzard "dumbed" Starcraft down and made the game too easy.

So what does everyone think? Would a change like this or something similar fix the current "Zerg Problem"?

1) You can use Spawn Larvea on your minimap
2) Try shift+escape combination, assuming you have queens >= hatcheries, and then immediately switch back to your micro army. F.ex. hit 4 (all your queens hotkeyed), v (for spawn larvea), then holding shift - hit backspace (which will center your screen to your first hatchery) when click with your mouse, backspace, mouse, backspace etc, when quickly hit 1/1 again to center on your army. Everything shouldn't take you longer than 2-3 sec without looking at your group

i think you're right on zerg being the most difficult mechanic to learn
but this is what make zerg the "funniest" race to play imho.
In fact i'm a protoss player, i like many things about them but i do find zerg more "entertaining" to play precisely due to the fact you have to do more things than in any others race.

I don't think "dumbing" zerg is a good way to make it popular, time will make it popular
