SC II Hands on @ Dreamhack (35308 reads, 117 replies, 3 years ago)
So I visited DreamHack for a day, and since Blizzard had SC II there, I had to try it. Being only 16 computers with SC II there I expected long lines of people waiting, but in fact it was almost always a computer free for you to play on. I played 11 games and went 7-4. I even managed to get my girlfriend (Eresea here on gg.net) to play it! Not against me though, I would never dare that!

I took some pictures with my cell phone, to show you how it was. The picture quality is very bad, but it's better than nothing at least.

The StarCraft II gaming area.

I'm going to post my views on the game, from how it looked now. However please note two things: I played 11 games. Most of you guys have played thousands of games of Brood War, and you still don't have Brood War fully mapped out and understood, that should go to show you how small the glimps I got from SC II. 11 games is not enough for a full big review in any way. The other thing is that I mainly played Zerg. I tried all three races, but only one game each with Terran and Protoss.

My own visit

Loading. My first StarCraft II game ever is about to start.

Overall impressions

Graphics

Mechanics

The Macro Issues

Cometitive play

An unsuspecting Protoss. He does not realise what my speedling harass will do to him!

Fun stuff

Complaining issues

There it is, sorry for this getting so very long but there are lots of thoughts and they are still very jumbled!

Been playing maybe 30 games now (probably more). Explored Zerg completely and tried some P/T. I'll be playing Zerg for sure.

The unit AI is pretty bad atm, but I'm sure it will be fixed. As for LoC it surpassed my expectations and I'm very happy with the way the game is going. I accepted the "gas micro" more than LoC it seems, but when I think about it I agree it's a bit silly and could be changed to something else if they want some more stuff for players to do.

Some unit animations are horrible (like mutas) but most are okay.
The game is extremely pretty after you get over the first "shock" as LoC pointed out, spot on.

Good writeup.

Nice report LoC, a good mix of your personal experience and subjective feedback.

I'm a bit surprised because it seems I agree 100% with you so far. I also like the graphics so far (unlike most I don't jump on the bandwagon and hate everything or love everything) but unit/background design must work together better and some units must get a new look like the zergling (stupid wings anyone?), I dislike some of the unit movement because it doesn't allow for ownage (in SC both players can improve their units a lot with micro - and I'm not talking about stuff like the blink ability - so in the end it equals out, no imbalances), MBS is actually not that bad anymore (of course I'd like to see it fully removed) and automining still takes too much control away of the gamer (if it gets removed I might actually be fine with MBS which is a ridiculous thought but honestly, I might jump over my shadow if it happens).

I'd like to know your opinion about the micro controls.
- Smartcast (having 100 templars selected but only 1 casts a storm after giving the command).
- Unit selection. Too many in 1 group yes/no?

And what do you think about being able to queue up buildings?

Smartcast, never tried it. But I've got nothing against it really. It's different from brood war but it doesn't make things easier or harder. In brood war you can make large storm carpets or focus several storms on one place with one click. This actually requires you to do more stuff, but makes it harder for you to mess up and waste 3 storms on one lurker.

Unit selection. It doesn't really affect gameplay. You still need to hotkey different units on different keys to be able to use them properly, so you can't just go 1a and see your entire 200 army go own everything. For example, I first tried to use the same hotkey for both hydras and lings, but speedlings are now so much faster than hydralisks so they ended up running straight in to the enemy without backup and getting owned. And when talking about larger armies you will need to use different hotkeys when you are positioning your forces for a good flank or similar.

Queuing buildings, never tried that as I'm zerg. Didn't really come up there :P But as I understood it when you choose to make a building the minerals disappear right away (when you click to build it, not when it starts building), and if it works the same when you queue up buildings you gonna need to sit on a shitload of money to actually be able to use it. If not, I imagine only terrans would be able to use it well, with constant supply production. I'm fine with this too, though, whichever way it works.

im gonna fo with ETBrood here..
screw automining.. thats like the worst thing ever.
although, somone who would forget to send the probes to mining, will most likely forget to macro properly too.

i think smartcast, could be quite usefull for some units, but im kinda used to my 3 spread templars storm, which rocks...

unit selection. actually i dont care about that one. in my opinion newbs can grab their whole army and attack mein a nice and long line... lol^^
to play on a higher level, you should still make teams. at least 3-4.
but if it was my choice, i'd still kick this feature out of the game aswell.

About smartcast I have to say that imo it's not comparable to the way it is in SC. Of course you can take a couple of HT's that are close together and storm a nice field of psi storms that do not overlap but the thing is you can still mess it up which is more than likely to happen. In SC2 you can't mess up several storms, you can only misplace one storm at a time. In SC if you accidently double-click one spellcaster and then instantly use the spell you will waste a lot of energy because all spellcasters of the same type will cast at the same location. This is not really annoying in my eyes, it creates a good type of challenge because you need very good unit control. In SC2 this can't happen, ever. You can't make that mistake anymore.
That's what I was asking about, do you think it's good that because of smartcast it's so extremely unlikely to waste the energy of your spellcasters? Isn't it boring to see every single newb being able to cast storm/lockdown/anything like a pro now?

Imo, and this is not something I tried when playing, that will be outweighed by the fact that you have to click once for each spell, something you didn't before. If you wanna fire away five storms now you have a few problems (assuming you have five HTs in your group):
It's 10 clicks, whereas it in bw could've been 2. This takes away time and focus from other stuff going on, like microing the rest of the battle.
You still need to keep full track of where all your HTs are, so one doesn't arrive 10 second later and storming your own units.
Storms are not as effective now. They cover a much smaller area.

Also, no noob will be able to play in any way like a pro. There is still so much else going on in a battle that casting storms is not the only thing you need to do. And I still doubt a noob would be able to execute storming as good as a professional gamer. Please don't use such oversimplified arguments.

Uhm, I strongly disagree with that you can make 10 storms with 2 clicks in SC. I have never seen a gosu using the triangle feature to cast several storms at once. Maybe amateurs take their time in a battle to maneuver their HT's so that they can make use of the triangle but when you're playing vs a gosu you don't have enough time for that, you must cast storms asap so you cast storms individually. I've seen it once or twice in recent games of foreign gosus that they make use of the triangle for HT's but they totally screw it up because of the gamepace.

Lets just take science vessels as an example instead. In SC you have to use shift (with chances to have the spell overlap because you're too close to the target) or you cast individually which is extremely difficult and isn't very useful if you want to irradiate a group of units because you have to make about twice as many clicks. In SC2 if there were science vessels you'd be able to cast irradiate better than a progamer because of smartcast. So, with this in mind what do you think of smartcast now?

Uhm, I said 5 storms?

And no, no amatuer will be able to cast better than progamers. If they could, he would be the professional gamer and the pro would be the amatuer. Noobs won't suddenly get better than pros.

You are saying "a decent player in sc2 will be able to cast spells better than a professional gamer in bw, this is wrong". You don't think professional gamers in sc2 will be able to do this even better? You can argue that it lowers the skill cap, but you cannot argue that noobs will go beat pros with it.

Seems interesting, but in the long run, i think that BW will still be more interesting :P
I mean sure, you can do more harass and micro, but no-one is stopping you from doing it in bw, except your apm.

IF they remove all these too easy features (mbs might stay if the remove everything else like smartcast, big control groups, turning animations, bad controls, automining) It could be even nice :P

#16 In SC the advantage of a pro over a chobo when it comes to spellcasting is like 60-70%. With smartcast the advantage is drastically reduced to maybe 20% at best. That's my point. If you see it differently ok, would you explain to me how you think the pro can get his great advantage back with smartcast?
