Dragoon micro against mines (5609 reads, 28 replies, 3 years ago)
Topic says it all "Dragoon micro against mines".

When I try to harrass or move outside my base early game I tend to loose too many dragoons.

I have tried a-move and hold position(like tasteless said), but I can't get it right, what is the right thing to do?

All this is ofcourse before observers are out.

Move forward
Move backwards
Hold

Repeat.

It takes a lot of patience and micro and it's not always that successful if it's a bunch of mines grouped together (That's cuz a group of goons can only handle 1-2 mines popping up at the same time)

How do I make it possible to play? Computers can't play on ums maps and says "you need to have an opponent to start the game". Never created a map before as you might have noticed ;)

#5 Open a new map and

1. Hit Ctrl+enter, so Player settings window shows up, set a player to Terran and set his control to Computer
2. Hit ctrl+shift+f, so the Forces windows shows up, drag the computer player to another force.
3. Place start location for player somewhere, and one for the comp too
4. Place a building for both player and comp OR hit ctrl+shift+t to get to the Triggers window, and delete all triggers you see there
5. Put down the goons for the P player and the mines for the T comp.

There you go. ^^
I love myself and I have no reason to doubt my feelings...

Ok, I've been trying a few things out and i'm not sure what's most effective yet. Different people have told me different things. I need opinions on the best way to do this.

Stop or Hold Position?

Forward and S/H or Forward, Back and S/H?

Also I've found that moving invidudual goons forward is even more reliable (my micro isn't great, but i snipe mine like 80% of the time with one of the S/H methods but more like 95% with this). It does take a little longer to move forward like this though. Thoughts?

Here is an UMS map you can train goon vs mine micro without observers:

Ok, I tried to do it as fast as I can.

However, I haven't tested it. If there is a problem, tell me. ^_^

UPD: Ok, observers are fine. I've just succeeded to pass the 1st level. :P

Edit:
To logain:

And divide computers to a different 'Force'.

Watch some MIStrZZZ reps, he is a master of minesweeping ;) move 1 goon and when mine will activate just go back and join the "hold" goon group, they will crash the mine ;)

Never use stop in any situation.. not even when you are going to stop your army.. it will cause a pause of fire and your goons will die insta ;p

Well tbh.. for this to actually work you have to touch the mine just as much that it will attack.. if you move too far it will of course be able to blow up faster.. Mines has a timer on them which in interval will sweep for target.. which means if you move your goon too far into the mine it will popup very late and will be just beside your goon.. Keeping max range is critical..

IMO you need 3 goons.. 1 that lure 2 that shoot. then you can have 1 goon constantly running from the mine meanwhile the other 2 shoot it down..
