pvz replay, help (309 reads, 11 replies)
http://www.fighterreplays.com/starcraft/replays/92a474

first off i just started playing again like 4 maybe 5 months ago after a 4 year break from my newbie year - because of my connection (dial up). so i know this replay may look newbie to most of you guys here.

okay, so basically i fe & go reaver/goon but i didnt harrass at all till i had 12+ goons (i know). earlier my probe was scouting & i saw hydras so just a reaction to me i thought "maybe he's just tricking me & gonna go spire for multas" so i put a couple more cannons on my main & expo to help incase of muta harass. so back to my first attack, well i was contained for a while till my reavers came up & with reavers i pushed him back. I go to attack but before i even notice it, my shuttle gets killed before i launch the attack (i know :( ..). after that it was just mini battles after mini battles. i know i didnt play good cause i let him plague me a lot of times being careless & my attacks werent really successful because i kept pulling back. PLUS my apm is horrible too, i spam a lot in beginning to get high apm but after a while i just go down hill with my apm ( i dont know why, since in mid - late game i am doing more stuff). well, watch my replay & tell me what i should be doing & what i did wrong. thanks gg.net

Now first of all. High APM doesen`t make you better. I didn`t watch the replay cause I`m at work but I`ll try to give you some adveices as an Z user. First of all try to scout more and more. Practice your micro so you don`t get your shuttle killed. As toss user you need such a crazy macro. Your APM will increase with practicing. Just harass a little bit more and don`t let him expand.

P.S goons are so weak against hydra ... T_T

Yes indeed. Spamming in the beginning is good but spam all the game so you can just have higher APM... man that`s stupid. Higher APM with no spam means that you are actually doing smth, but higher APM from spam only ... I just think it`s stupid. Players like brEaKdOwn, FisheYe, Testie and allot more have 150 and bellow and we all know what FisheYe did at WCG 2002 ... 2-1 lost agains Ogogo(300+ APM zerg) in the final

not really, testie plays with 150 in general but when he plays top class sc he has to go for 200+ apm, as we saw vs progamers at WWI

Yes, it's possible that your low apm hinders you a bit, just checked your rep, and the macro was not that bad. But your unit control is awful and I mean it. First, losing that shuttle... okay, sometimes happens... but keep an eye on your army, especially important units like that shuttle with two reavers, or your templars.

And what is most important, keep your army together all the time! I noticed, that you simply a-attack with all your troops from the middle of the map. Result: they go in a single line. Don't need to tell you that this is not very good. Try to keep an eye on the minimap also, you couldve noticed, that your whole army(!) chased one defiler (!) through the map for almost a whole minute! If you're army is scattered like this all the time, you don't stand a chance. Z will just kill these small groups individually. You had a good chance of winning, but this screws you big time and you lost because of this, even though you had a great army.

Also scout more and try to kill off those exps, after your initial sair died, you did not scout at all, or just a little! Whittle down Z's hatcheries as often you could! Use dt's they are quite annoying and can be a huge pain in the ass. Also you can try some stormdrops, it's a depressing sight when a whole minline of drones die in a few secs.

Try to add more forges much more sooner, and start that +1 upgrade sooner!

But seriously, it's the unit control that hinders you big time. Hope this helps out.

Keep a good eye on your forces. Don't just send the 12goons and 1shuttle to enemy base with atk move and hope that they don't die along the way. Aproach carefully, and if you're handling a shuttle, make sure to pull it back a bit then let it go again every few steps, since with upgraded speed, they can actually outrun goons and accidently run into a hydra group. That shuttle should've never, ever died.

And by keeping a eye on them, I mean check your minimap as you send 'em to enemy nat, double click the hotkey the goons are assigned to every few seconds to make sure they're ok on the way there, etc.

APM with spam is stupid, like other people pointed out, but high APM with no spam besides beginning is good multitasking and speed. Don't mind your apm at the moment, your primary focus should be constant high state of mind, speed, and of course, best multitasking you can manage at your level. A good tip is to not let the same screen rest on your monitor for more than a second. For example, you press 0p, send the idle probe to mine, but quickly switch on to your rally point to hotkey more goon/reaver armies, don't waste too much time doing that either, quickly do a little 4d5d6d7d, now quickly go back to your main goon army and do some micros or retreats, go back to 0p, send probe to mine, QUICKLY 454545 to see goon's production, if it's almost done, 4d5d6d7d, QUICKLY do some more micros, etc.

It all comes with experience. Sooner or later you'll see your apm rise by itself, not because you spammed, but because you're doing efficient stuff you should be doing, at a fast pace.

Take it from a guy who've seen his 220~apm rise to average of 300+apm every match in about 2months of practice. ^^ And of course, no spam, except some exercise spam in first 5min.
