I think it could be fun for beginners, but in the competetive level it sounds like a bad idea.. Unless you get to see the map or at least the distances from base to base right before the match starts. Don't know if it would work even then.

I don't know much about scII but imagine this in bw, would never work.

wait what? isn't there a map preview in BW in game lobby?
And if I am not mistaken SC2 by default shows terrain explored but with fog of war (at least on minimap)?

And why randomness is so bad 'on competitive level'?

more randomness => greater value of adaptation and flexibility and imo that would be a good thing. It would reward brilliant players more than skilled craftsmen.
Using real world example: every soccer match is different (length and width of the field, weather) and yet players manage to play just fine, not to mention countless goals scored in ridiculous circumstances (dreaded luck) - does anyone deny competitiveness of soccer?

I don't know much about scII but imagine this in bw, would never work.

Apparently you lack imagination :P
Long time ago with my friends we played to death every single 4-6 slot map included in SC/BW - no matter what better players were better overall. I was really surprised when i discovered that on battlenet people play exclusively LT or hunters, and later luna etc. I couldnt stand that - playing 1 map over and over... o.O

Yeah, out with the old, in with the new. No more playing only two maps that have been mastered over and over. Evolve as gamers or be left behind, bitches.

Random mapgenerator for the mapmakeing software would be intresting. Just generate a map and then edit it.

I got an idea.

This could infact be a different mode of the game (like free for all / melee / use map settings). That way there could be a totally different type of tournaments.

Also, to remove any luck involved it is possible that in this mode the whole map is in fog of war at start of game. So while pro players are going for the standard opening (making workers) they could also check the map and see if expands are close and stuff.

This way pro players would be able to use the map to their advantage. The one that best manages to understand the maps advantages would have the upper hand. This way pro players won't just repeat old tricks that they have learned from watching other players play on a specific already learned map but would have to try new ones of their own.

Also, in order for the map to be as most balanced for the MU maybe it would take the players races into consideration. That way for example if there is a single terran in the game there won't be many cliffs near expands and stuff but if there are both terrans there could be a lot of cliffs (or randomly chosing the amount in such case) thus making some of the games macro style others micro and making the games far more entertaining.

The only downside I see is that this mode would be very voulnerable to hackers. And they could even use it to force a standard game in a different mode act as in such and thus revealing your map (tho only in fog of war).

I know most of you are sceptical about it but when you think about it it's SCII. They have to take RTS games to the next level. And this could actually be the thing that makes SCII a better strategy than SC (having introduced a new factor - overall vision into the game).

P.S. It is a tough choice for me to decide if it would be better if you had even the enemy's starting location revealed at beginning. This would remove all the luck involved in the beginning in SC but would favour risky bould and cheases.

Thanks to those that actually had the patience to follow all the way through my ideas! Hope you found atleast something interesting!

I could see it being enjoyable for non tournament play. I mean I remember a game I play with like 5 friends back when the game was maybe a year old that was just a giant island/money map that someone found that we played on for 5+ hours, it was such a blast!

Not everything needs to revolve around progaming, but since this site is focused on that I understand everyone's concerns with a random map generator.

It would be fun, but not for tournament play there would too much complaining (and most likely rightfully so) for it to work correctly.
