Tactical question (451 reads, 14 replies)

Ok I arrive on the zerg's doorstep with a 12 pack and medics to find a wall of sunkens. He is presumably going muta and has expanded once. So I start a mess of turrets back home. What next?

Do I tech out, go air, try to drop him or expand madly? Try to get tanks and force my way in? What DO you do?

if you haven't expanded yet, get vessels and mass yourself while expanding.
if have already expanded, then just get vessels and be aggresive.

Interesting. Since the game was played at noob pace, that might have worked. Vessels would have popped soon after his lurkers did and I was ready to expand too. I had a starport already.. but to hurt him I'd have to either drop behind the sunkens or irradiate his workers. Hmm. I had pretty strong turret defense, and in the actual game he lost way too many mutas for what he managed to do to my base. So he dropped the muta idea and went for a lurker/ling rush.

Zerg always goes mutalisks in the start, just to switch to lurkers later. Mutalisks just doesn't work later in the game.

To fight lurkers you need science vessels and tanks. Tanks have longer range than lurker even when they aren't sieged.

It's important to expand to your natural so you can mass a lot of marines and tanks etc.

And dont forget marine upgrades!

About the marine upgrades - do you 1&1, 2&2, 3&3 or 1,2,3 weapons 1,2,3 armor or something else?

You start with 1 weapons. By the time you start 2 weapons, you should have second ebay and start armor about at the same time.

#5 I sometimes go Lurker/Ling and don't go muta. I just build spire for scourging vessels. But, muta first is better in keeping the terran in his base than lurks first do.

You should scout or use ComSat to try to see if he's going muta or lurks.

Two ebays? Against any opponent? I tend to just use one vs zerg.

Anyhow this is all pretty cool. I have my standard BOs down pretty well and now its all about what to do as the middle game starts. The reason I think this is cool is cuz for the last week, I usually arrive at the middle game dead. But my survival time is steadily increasing and I am coming closer to beating some of those dreaded D- players.

I'm getting a little game feel too. Had a game the other day where I had lousy scouting against zerg, was roaring ahead with production anyhow, then I had this creepy feeling that it was way too quiet. It felt like mutas coming. By the time they arrived there were 8 turrets waiting for 'em.

Yup guys are still whompin me steady, but they aren't just walking into my main like they did a week ago.

BTW my BOs are a little nonstandard to allow for noobishness. My 2 rax build goes roughly

which makes some allowance for my tendency to fall behind on depots. My tech lags a bit but the rax are goin pretty much nonstop which is what this noob needs! Next comes CC then 2 more rax then tech. If all goes well.

Dude try to play 1 rax fast expo. Dont stop pumping rines till you scout him he`s not planing any speed ling rush or just 9pool or so. And if you want to finish him early with no exp I suggest you to use 3 rax mass mnm. If he goes muta just place well some turrets 1-2 vessels are enough(+Irradiate). Prevent him from expanding and scout his main so you can see if he`s not going for deffiler tech. Meanwhile pump rines tanks and vessels and grab second expo. Just use you`re machines well and he`ll GG.

P.S Lurk opening >> Muta opening

with your bo you caould do an early game rine push right after stim has finished. Its more an aggressive build you do and you should use this at least to force him to make mass sunks and get early mapconrtrol perhaps get tanks before vessels and push.

Wow Fatso, yer a freakin psychic cuz thats exactly what has been happening, mass sunks and muta harass. Followed by lurkers. I've learned to handle the mutas, but the lurker rush is still a problem. Wave 1 goes down, but he usually gets me on wave 2.
