Go ahead and try, if you like the game alot and just play for fun you will eventually be good enough to play competitive. Although expect that it won't happen fast, depending on how much of a talent you are. If you don't have a talent you will need to practice hard/alot to become good fast. From the years i've played bw i learned 1 thing, The better you become, the faster you will improve until you reach a certain level, after that point you just gotta massgame to improve your mechanics etc.

yea find someone at you own level, or little bit higher if you want to make progress.
I have played this damn game in bnet use map settings and shit for about 8 years since release and learned the most of the trix and just recently about 2 years ago started to play at iccup for normal games, and got totally owned. Then i went back and played friends and had some fun and found some more confidence and went back to iccup only to get owned again... ^^

You might be more of a talent than me though, but it takes a lot of training to become good at sc... Go ahead and give it a shot!

So you are saying that if u don´t get good at bw u are necessarily dumb? Someone who does not improve in math no matter how long he studies is necessarily dumb, even though if he is good at other subjects?

Ofc is good lol. As I said, to reach a high level of play in Q3 1v1, you know what lossing is, and what hard work is, no matter how talented you are. But my will for competitive gaming (at least with Quake which is my alltime favorite) I always had a very strong will for superation regardless how much I would need to lose, and finally started to get close with the top players. And if SC (and then SC2) are going to continue being used at the big events, that motivates me a lot to play since what I search the most is a solid-tournament game.

For now I just would like to know what maps are being played nowadays that I should learn (the only map I really know is Lost Temple lol), and what 1v1 replays that you consider essential to watch..

There are about 10k replays and 1k vods that are essential to watch, you'll have no time to real life left if you really want to improve that way. And that's basically the problem, you should watch or have watched them to get an idea how to pull off all of the few thousand possible things in SC :o
I'm still telling you to start by playing just for fun, trust me SC is at least one level higher than Q3 and you said you aren't even on top in Q3 so you probably don't know how hard it is to be even mediocre in SC.

there is a sort of connection bewteen q3 and sc. For a lot of sc players, q3 is the best FPS and vice verca.
Fulcrum_ what's you Q3 ID ? I'll help you if you need.

I remember i was playing some Q3 just for fun long time ago.. and then some french crazy good player came on the server, he was aAa.AppleSeed and just started to rape me.
It was like 50 - 0 in 5 minutes xD

Fps is a bore.... in sc you'll hardly ever play the same game twice although you're playing the same tactic & strat. If you like chess, then in a way you'll like SC, it's virtually the same just you'll have more "kinetic" & visual action in a comparison!

SC takes time and a shit load of moral to keep it up in 1v1 gaming!
Most FPS people I introduced to SC gave up after 50 games because they found it was to hard to get good at, and too actually see real and fast usable results to build on, as what they were used to in FPS.

I found most FPS players were all demoralized very fast at SC and mostly choleric even after loosing only 1 frag in FPS ..... That will get you nowhere in SC.

There is so much input accessible for SC that it it wont take anyone too long to start to understand how to play, but the actual doing it yourself is a total different thing.

Should you give it a shot? YES i predict a max of 50 - 300 1v1 games then you've had enough.

PS: NOT ONE FPS gamer that I know of or introduced to the game, stuck with SC, in the past 8 years. They all shake their heads about sc and shut up real fast the moment I remind them all about this! especially when I catch them boasting about how their overall gaming skills are , by the way RTS C&C gamer really make me laugh, SC was too fast for them all even at speed Slow ^^!

It's like some one above said:
1 frag = easy (keeps you going)
1 sc win = hard, because you had to lose 20-50 games to get it!

lol again, I already know that with SC is impossible, but I just want to see how good can I get until SC2 release.

Btw, some people here seems that doesn't really know what is talking about. SCTV i know how hard SC is, but I think you are understimating Q3 (i dont care about the rest of FPS). Same as SC, you wouldn't touch me in a 1v1 even if you played a full year, and you would give up eventually if you don't have the will to compete, exactly as SC.
