What i miss the most in the RTSes is the map generator. I'd like to have such thing in SC2.
You can say it woud imba because some races will be favored. That's true, but:
- tournaments could be played on rigged maps
- in the long run few unlucky losses would have no meaning, as statistically everyone would have them.
- map imbas would not be so severely exploited because they would occur 1/10 not 10/10 like now (in a broken map) and it would require more time to find exploit, not to mention recognizing proper conditions of the map on the fly.
Such solution would reward players with general skill and sense of the game, adapting to extremely varying circumstances and god damn creative. But i know it's pretty much impossible 1. blizz won't do it, 2. pros and wannabe pros like to polish their game execution in tiniest details and anything random ruins their training.
i think there was a red alert clone rts , called Arsenal (Taste the power) , it had random map generator, i think if they could do it in ~1998 , it wont be a problem for Blizzard 10 years later. I think random map is good idea!
i remember i was really disappointed when i discovered that every single game on bnet was on Lost Temple (ancient times). It was truly a horrible discovery that SC is about boring repetitiveness. It sucked then, as I liked to play random maps with random race. With my friends we probably utilized every 128x128 [4] map from SC/Broodwar directories before - map imba my ass :)
Now it's perfectly normal that i play the same maps all the time. Apparently i was exposed to sc for too long, it managed to change my perception :-)
Age of Empires has always had random maps generated. It works well in those games since the terrain doesn't really make a huge difference. But in SC it does make a difference so I'm not sure it'd work as well really. But it'd still be a nice feature.
Or at least to be able to choose "Random" when creating a game and then it chooses some random map of the ones you have.
maybe it could generate some maps with a standard layout. build one base by selecting at random from among a couple of predesigned base layouts, choke and ramp variants, expansion locations etc. then mirror it all along a predefined number of symmetry axes for the desired number of players. i don't know how exciting this would be though, probably not very much.
I don't see how this could be programmed. Other RTS have this because the landscape is an assymetrical collection of blobs anyway with little consequence. SC-maps are so tweaked I don't know if there is a sey of thumbrules for software to handle. I think these maps will be horrible.
Randomness simply is not something you want to have in a professional league. The developers of Starcraft II have understood this as well, as they are removing the 'chance' in low ground vs. high ground attacks.
this is how I imagine map randomizing. Would be really great for ums makers maybe for melee too. I hope that picture explains it well. The map can be more complicated than this, i just made a simple one.
#10 I don' that that'll work well with SC cuz the starts vary so much that it might come down to who guessed the map correctly. Or we could make gazillion maps so that scouting is actually necessary.
Dominator ur idea is actually doable :) not sure how but it won't take much to stack three maps in one. I would suggest some random doodad areas where every game it regenerates. Yet, it only applies to some areas so that it won't get in the way.
^^b support this idea. Can't we collect all the good maps from the past 10 years andm make a mixer or something?
but not for any professional leagues or tournaments..
u know all the other sports like tennis soccer ice hockey are played in the same "map" (field/arena/etc) every time too
idea sucks whats point in playing game where map will be sometimes very easy for you to win and other game very hard to win
ppl who are good will have 50-50 win loss ratio and some newb who plays 1 week can get lucky and gets 80% or 90% map generated in his favour.
That newb could win lets say some sponsored tour over very good player.
I agree, it's a bad idea generally. The problem isn't the fact that there are no maps around, just take a look on google for some map websites and you will find hundreds. And any kind of professional scene like korean or "professional" foreign scene needs a certain map pool at any given time, for the points given by many in this thread.

Do you think more events between the Korean pro-scene and the foreign community should be organized? (Example: Spirit Tournament, World-Wide Invitiational) (691 votes)
Yes, it will help both communities grow stronger!

Yes, but it will do very little for both communities or help only one of the two
