TvP vs carriers on LT (1395 reads, 33 replies)
What is the best way to combat carriers on LT? When the P gets to carriers its basically gg for me every time =\ Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Play vs Carrier on LT is harder than other maps coz' of its several cliffs and isles...

My favourite tattics vs carrier is simply make a lot of goliath (ALWAYS UPGRADED both range and armor + weapon) with 3-4 vessels with EMP (very useful)

Well microed Goliath can make big damages on carriers and the EMP is useful for decrese the carrier HP before your goliath start firing, and with vessel you can light the cliff on LT so it help a lot in kicking ass his lamer carriers.

OR

If you scan his carrier and you dont see any obs or at least 1-2 of them, go mass wraith (hidden somewhere) and when u got 12-15 wraith go owning his fleet.
But from my point of view, wraiths arent so effective vs carrier coz they are expansive and they dont have enough HP and they are really owned by carriers + 5-6 corsairs... or by background goons.

But anyway even the Wraiths are a quite good choise, but becareful from support units like corsairs, if he make them u must produce goliaths

And if your enemy is going fast carrier in early - midgame you can simple outmacro him with your tank - vulture and throw away his stargates and fleet beacon, but if is making carriers as a support for ground army (goon + zeal) then you need a very good macro and micro with both antiair and antiground units... i dont thing so.... yours is the usually complain of a protoss "1v1 @ Luna"... cliff are a great advantage for carriers harrass... coz' goliath AI is stupid... and terran need a very good timing - micro and patience.

and... Let me just say LOL coz' is known that P is a easy race like: 1a2a3a4a5a GG

#3 go play more arcadia 200 limit & go(go roll over 1a2a3a4a...) but watch for dt drop i thought u know something about this game but i was wrong 1a2a3a4a may be good enough vs you but vs more skilled players i need some more sophisticated tactics. Go Goliaths, no no no no and again no to wraiths if he will scout your wraith tech (which is possible due to small invisible obserwers) u are owned badly because of corsairs. Wraith cost twice as much as goliath when it comes to gas. And believe me after pumping tanks terrans are often low on it. If u are only 2 gas u are almost dead if u cant do any major damage with your tanks and vultures. LT is even more problematic due to islands where P can take bases u cannot reach. Just scan and attack and. TBH u need supreme skill to beat Hard dragon / HT / Carrier combo. Pure Carriers are deadly but that is just ultimate combo vs T.

dont go wraiths, if he is any good he will have some observer among those carriers, and wraiths are too expensive and too weak.

go mass goliaths (range is a must). and remember one more thing: each attack upgrade for goliaths means +4 damage to rockets, so in the end you have 32 instead of 20. well worth it.

when you get comfortable at massing and using goliaths (u always need to scan the cliffs to keep attacking his carriers when they take shelter there), incorporate science vessels into this strategy. if you really want to be gosu, use ghosts and lock the fuckers down all at once and scream "PWNED BITCH!!!!11".

And anyway ALL Protoss on ALL Levels are something like this: 1a2a3a4a5a... GG while in the same time T need a much more multitasking...

it's more of a gas & cliff issue as a T vs carriers on LT. If I miss the carrier-tech and do a late switch to gols it simply a really tough game to play or in fact win, especially when toss manages to knock out your gas. so most of those kind of games your stuck around your cliffs defending your gas until you can mass up 2-3 groups of gols. mass turrets can defend your island, if toss goes for that early without upgrades. In some cases it's ok just to take out the interceptors and sit back a few sec's, to buy some micro time and give you a chance to mass up!

Use all your ground force and push some expansion fast the moment you see he's going carriers just put the pressure up and save all your gas for gols + ups spend half of your Mins you'd normally spend on vults on turrets to keep an Island(s), gas or hotspot/flank

check his troop mix and make sure to counter that mix with the right troops if he doesnt go all out carriers. make a risky expansion, you could get away with it, if you both are constantly fighting. gl

O-M-G when did i complain? you must be retarded if you can't agree on that a map with many cliffs are a favour to terran. only time P get's advantage is with carriers and thats late game. YOU are just a noob if you let the P tech to carriers, face it.

and btw, wtf do you meen P is an easy race? Am i supposted to get insulted? Did I say P is a hard race? I think P is easier and funnier then terr and thats why i play them moron

He is a noob for letting P tech to carriers? Yeah that makes sense... Seems to me that a good P can tech to carriers whenever they want in midgame. Terran needs time to get a decent army to move out, else they will get crushed. A good P can almost always secure an extra expo in the beginning. And er.... is one race being favored not the same as imbalace..? But yes, many many goliaths seem to work the best for me. I continually scan stargates to see how much money he is investing in his air force. More flashy, more goliaths (Of course, they should be upgraded, espescially range.) Vessels can also come in hany. Sometimes, they will alternate air and ground forces.. in that case it can be difficult to find a balance between tanks and goliaths, or switch back to vults. Like another poster said, if you catch him producing carriers early on, move on one of his expansions and force him to split his income between carriers and saving his bases. As always, scan the gates to monitor his carrier production and adjust your units accordingly. Also, when faceing carriers, it is important to get the goliath timing down so you can shoot them while you run. Basically, early detection is the key, in that case you will be able to overpower him with your goliaths.

the most crucial thing in fighting carriers is not other but SCAN..
U have to constantly scan him in order to know exactly what he's doing etc.
The thing is i guess that u dont know where to look for carriers (starports). Now here's what u do. U scan his nexus at main, his gates at main, some unused space in his main, some hide spot arround his main-nat (for example in blitzX u can build 2 stargates exactly south from ur nat since there is this hidden spot)
For fighting carriers u should have armory ofc. Sometimes when u see carrier u dont have it and that is very bad problem ;;

As i said.. scan his base often. See what he's up to (carriers for example) and counter it.

That 'counter' stuff happens in two ways: 1st - a _GOOD TIMING_ push with 8-12 goliats with 1/1 upg ; 2nd - with not that good timing push but with more goliats and better micro. Microing ur goliats against carriers means that u must target 'injured' carriers, then fall back target interceptors (1a2a), then target again some carrier.

The other important thing is to know the EXACT timing of a toss going for carriers
For example lets say the toss is at 1-expo-2-stargate-carriers strat. This is a not so often strat (?) that can be countered easyly by terran with a push but u must know how to actualy UNDERSTAND what toss is doing. If he is doing 1expo2gatecarriers he will camp alitle, he will delay his 2nd expo with Probably a minute or two and he will build that 2 stargates at a hidden spot (check again what i wrote above)

There are several starts with carriers. Now i will tell u them and explain how to counter them (that thing is the same on every map and since i dont really like LT i will not speak for it... But on LT main thing about goliath micro is to scan the cliffs where those carriers are hiding since goliath A.I is to low)
1st: 2 stargate carriers. a strat with to possibilities. -> 1 expo carriers and 2 expo carriers. The second possibiliti is not that good and u will probably not see it happen (exept if toss was first on arbiter and he didnt want to waste money =))
2nd: 3 stargate carriers -> imo this is the best carrier strat since it will give the toss some air advantage as well as ground force. it is usualy done after the second expo is compleate (9-10 minute). the 3 stargates are usualy putted near main nexus, at a unused spot in main or at 2nd expo. The counter vs that is a push for that second expo. You MUST be very careful with ur tanks since toss will not have only carriers. And when they appear target them when they are in range with ur goliats (which by that time are 1/1) U must atleast try to kill the second expo and 1-3 carriers for ur push to be succesefull. Also remember.. when u push U GAIN MAP CONTROL = expo asap. Expo number is crucial against carriers.
3th: 4 stargate carriers -> imo this is a good start but it gives the toss some decent disadvantage in ground force since a carrier cost much. Exept if he has more than 3 expos (or even 3) he is at disadvantage. The ports must be looked at 2nd expo, main nexus area, hidden spot and in ur case at islands.
the timing for this strat is 16-17 minute. after that u must be ready for carriers.
U counter this a bit more harder and u will need 3 expo minimum. Goliaths won't do a good job here so u must combine them with wraiths. Cloack wrights, Micro ur goliaths (check the text above about micro) siege ur tanks fast and at good position, if needed add a turret or two and place mines at flanking areas.

of course, a good P can win early game too so there is no stoping a protoss. your'e right ^^
