ZvP Hydra Builds (1251 reads, 13 replies)
I've got a few questions about in ZvP vs a fast expand how the 3/4/5 hatchery hydralisk builds work, and their specific build orders. (this being den with upgrades and then pretty much mass hydra)

When I do 3 hatchery hydras, it seems that I always have constant production of hydralisks, but if the hydralisk attack fails then I'll lose.

With 4 hatchery, I can't have constant production though my economy is a little bit better and if I don't succeed I still have a chance.

With 5 hathchery hydras, I get hydralisks very late and by then they have storm already, and sometimes tons of zealots. This build leaves me really economically ahead and I have lots of resources but the hydras seem to come too late for it to do as much damage as possible, because once too many storms come out you can't micro it.

Basically I would like to know which of the 3 builds is the most commonplace and most useful (I would say 4 hatch), and also the specific build order. Right now I have a very vague build order that I mostly play on instincts-

12 hatchery
11 pool
14 hatchery
15 extractor
18 hatchery

This is something like I have, but it's always random. So, what's the specific build order? Thanks in advance.

if 3 hatch hydras failed isnt a lose, just continue morphing them in lurks and making a 3rd expo...

anyway look some reps of lG)Castro, he almost always goes for 3 hatch hydra against P

Everything of course depends on the map. A 4 hatch has usually worked for me well...make sure to place your gas early enough so you can get upgrades. I try to time it sp that I have 3 groups of hydras right when my 2nd upgrade is complete.

Make sure to keep a good eye on him though. If you're preparing a hydra rush and putting more effort into economy, a few early zeals of his can really hurt.

One thing that I've also learned recently that _really_ helps economy is making overlords in advance. That is, don't wait for 18/18 to make an OL...make it around 15. It will cost you the 8 or so seconds of waiting for the minerals, but will save you the 30 or whatever seconds of waiting for an OL to be produced.

I was just wondering about doing the hatch a little faster like:

9 ovi
9 hatch
9 pool
9 extractor
14 hatch
17 hatch

Those arent the exact times like the poster said its all random.
But i go 9 extractor so that i can upgrade ling speed also and still have enough gas to be comfortable.

Conaaaa the guy with the commentary? Anyways its best to in my opinion to start out with a 3 hatch hydra rush, this causes protoss to build lots of cannons 5-7 so they dont get overrun (if they dont you can go ahead and kill him) once hes done this he has sacraficed alot of resources so you can go ahead and tech to lurker which shouldnt be that far behind while macroing up lurk contain and macro and you should have the lead. A good hydra rush can either kill the protoss enemy or make him mass cannons either way its in your favor. 4 hatching is more for macro purposes then a hydra rush. Because by the time you can mass hydras protoss should have a temp or 2 out. Anyways this is just my opinion.

oh and the build i use vs fe is like do a normal 3 hatch build 3rd hatch in a dif expo and build a gas right along with your 3rd hatch and go straight to hydra den.

#12 i would agree few months ago... but players like me unfortunately tend to play strats like 2 stargate +dts open really often and mutas have really bad time vs 2 stargate corsairs. Hydras are good i must say. They are like always good counter to everything(not best counter tho) but works fine vs anything if u micro well. Go hydra then add lurks as a B protoss i have many more problems fighting (thats important) well controled hydra/Lurker than Ultra/Ling. Some zergs now how to place lurkers well and dance with hydras even better.
