#12, depends on the terrain, weapons used, size of armies, deployment etc.
Also, a flanking does not have to be from serveral directions. Attacking one flank is still flanking..

Nope, I have both done my army duty and worked/still works some times for the swedish army. It doesn't matter if one groupe is deployed on a building or a bit from the side or what the terrain is like. When a bullet hits it's target you'de be amazed what weird directions it can take, for example, a person get's hit in his sidebut the exit wound is on the side of his shoulder, same thing if it hit's a tree.

there is a term called 5 to 5, if your friend is 5 meter beside you he cant go more then 5 meter forward, if he does he would be within youre fire-range, and that goes for groups too (except then its more like 50 meters of course)

#14 and what about ricochetes? ;) of course if the building is high it might be ok but again, bullets bounce/find their own ways more often then you might think, and just imagine when a machine gun spits out hundreds of bullets... no fun i tell you

And well, flanking is from the side and nothing else. Not behind, or when you surround the enemy. And no it's not like an ambush, flanking is a move you make while the battle has begun.

if u play vs a camper on a map like maybe luna ( u can flank from 2 sides at the choke )

then just exp and take map i guess and just tech and mass.

if he turtles, then he probably gona be relying on drops, and if thats the case, just kill his drops and contain him till he runs out of minerals. each time he kills and exp with a drop, make it again :)

campers are the lamest players to play vs

maybe try some guardians, and some dark swarm and plague

All races can do flanking, but it is especially important for zerg. Why? Since zerg has more units than the other races, it is easier for zerg units to bunch together.

Flanking works especially well against tanks + m&m. If you flank/surround m&m, they can't stim-run away. If you flank/surround tanks, you will reduce the amount of splash damage.

It is less useful, but no less important against protoss. If you flank protoss, he will have to cast additional psi-storm, and his psi-storms will be less effective.

Another important aspect for Z is that it allows more units to come at the enemy at the same time, especially important vs T who has long range but also versus storm to make avoiding them easier.

Edit; numerous people had already mentioned avoiding storms, othervise versus protoss you should have a larger number of units and ofcourse you want as many as possible to engage combat at the same time, therefore increasing the area you engage him with using flanking is more efficient than have 1/2 of your army running past his and attacking from the rear, since you will take damage while doing it and you will have a harder time retreating if needed.

I never got that... even though I still did it, just for the sake of it:

When is it necessary to retreat? Is it when you don't have enough units to kill him?
