Manual suxx ,waste of time. Key to success is try on your own (experiment) + tutorials. Check my profile for my MSN/ICQ ,I'll be glad to help.

if you want to gain large area effect you must record 2 vidoes, the area of the recording should be almost in the same place, but the second video should be recorded one screen higher(without game interface!!)) than the 1st one.
Import files to vegas, place the files on the layers (2 file over the 1st ) and now youi have to set everything properly in the layer pan crop settings.
i will make some screens, after work ...

Well you need to play with the track motion. Set pan crop to remove menues and unit limit so you get a clear screen. You need 2 layers for each video. Then using track motion (I hope you know what I'm talking about) adjust the 2 vids so they cover each other. You put the one over the other so they the upper one covers parts of the second vid. Even if the edges don't quite match (I mean the first sceen a bit on the left side the other goes a bit to the right) it's no problem ,render and then add the vid in your project and zoom a bit (pan crop) to hide the edges.

The tricky part is that you have to sync both (or more) videos ...and this is tuff job. That's prolly the hardest thing of all. Here's a tut by KoNNi showing how to sync videos easily ,this may help.

Note - I'm using the defaut resolution in the project but when I render to 800/600 the the 2 vids don't quite fit as one (like it's in my project) So if the final thing is not like in the Vegas monitor just move the videos closer and should appear normally at the end. But I guess you're rendering settings are different than mine so you may not get this problem.
