Types of attack in SC2 (967 reads, 9 replies)
I'd like to raise a discussion about the types of attack. I know it's theorycraft but that's why this forum is here :P
In SC1 we had (i think) 2 basics types of attack - melle and range (i know that there were differences, that they could be devided - but that's nt the point :)).
I'll focus on range. In SC1 i think all or almost all units had an attack which firing sequence you could describe as shot, cooldown, shot. I know there was splash, there were different kinds of bullets or like for mutalisks - bouncing... But general idea was the same.
In SC2 many units have continues (laser-like) attack. Warp rays, soul hunters, Collosus (collosus' attack in addition is switching automaticly to another target without any cooldown)

Phoenixes have a double attack - i wonder if it's just the graphics or will both shots deal damage.

Another interesting thing is combat between both air and land units. Check out the final battle in the gameplay movie. Look at phoenixes, battle cruisers and stalkers - when they attack land (or air) units only they shoot normally, but when they have both of the types near them they shoot twice. For example stalker fighting a group of marines fires a single shot at one marine at a time, but when a BC comes in, it shoots twice - one shot at a marine, one shot at a battle cruiser. I wonder how can you choose which units are attacked if a unit attacks 2 at once?

All of this leads to a finall question - do you think it will have a big influence on micromanagment in the game?
In BW voltures fighting with zealots, wraith dances or muta harrasment was something very cool and great to watch.
i hope that SC2 will be focused on this aspect of the gameplay as any other.
Maybe micro will just chang e due to this new features.
What do you think?

ye you could see a great diversity of weapons. i just replyied somewhere that basicly....the diverser the game gets- the harder to balance. and judging on gameplay video i dont see much of a micromenagment in all that chaos so i think they will go for the macro balance...and how will micro turn out to be....yet to be seen

you won't see great micro when blizzard employees show off nice cool graphics and battles. they're not players themselves, at least not on the level where they can really pull off nice micro moves

Even though the game was not released yet, neither demo or beta or whatever, based just on what were shown yet, I think the whole game will be different.
I mean, yea, still starcraft which gives story, units and some basic rules for the gameplay, but everything including this micro thingie will change in some ways ... You won't see anymore micro marines vs zealot, hydra vs zealot etc., thanks to charge ability for instance, that's the one I can think of now, but there will be many more things that won't be doable anymore.

On the other hand, many new aspects of the game will raise I think. Besides new micro tactics like learning to use blink with stalkers for max effect and many others, there will be some completely new points of view in this game. You will have to care more about what you build where, there seem to be more tricks to be done, more options and you will probably need to adjust even more dynamicaly than in bw, at least these are mine feelings of all the info released so far.

Hell, yea, it will be a lot different from bw, I guess, but, with all the respect to bw and I really love it a lot, I woudln't want just remake, I still can play bw if I want play the old one, this will be SC 2, that should stand for some evolution which bring something new, that might be better than BW. And don't tell that BW is best and there can't be anything better. That could be either loosers or Gods statement, but the others are trying to make something better.

Maybe the last paragraph is a bit OT, anyway I felt like posting it, nomatter where, don't bash me :D

#2 I don't know but I've read numerous times in info about Blizzard, "We are great fans of games, we all play games, and share the passion for playing games with the regular fans" and stuff like that~ (not saying they'll possess great micro)

I can just imagine spending months memorizing every new MU, every single micro trick u can do and every single BO on SC2 when it comes out...

I think most of the people that don't like too many changes in SC2 just don't want to learn a new game again, not because of imbalance. As balance goes, even bw isn't perfect.

Micro i suppose wont be the same but it'll always be there. Imma cry when i have to micro Marines vs Zealots but w/e

of course theres gonna be a huge new influence on micromanagement look.. like i dunno splitting lots vs those kamakazi lings... im sure zealots wont be that useless vs siegetanks.. the guy just didnt micro (or didnt have a shuttle)

also im very happy for this very new wide range of attacks and armor classes makes it alot more about counters sorta (but not anything like) warcraft 3 u kno w/ piercing/normal/siege/magic damage along w/ heavy/normal/light/unarmored. how each type is better suited against one type nd worse against another.

god im dying for the unit announcements of the other races..
