Something just crossed my mind: maybe the Protoss would be able to warp units everywere not only when "creating" units, but anytime into the game. That surely could be used to save the mothership from a black hole and maybe also lockdown/all the shit except mind control.

this post got me thinking a little.. it hink the topic deserves its own thread

about the post;
if ANY toss units were able to warp FROM (&to) any point inside pylon power it would be ridicolously hard to balance

units produced by a warp gate (=upped gateway with "warping capability") or maybe even units previously produced by gatways and assembled close to a warpgate, may be able to warp "whenever" .... i doubt other units than "gateway units" will be able to warp like this though, but maybe (tho then they'd have to move from where they were produced to a warpgate before becomming available for warp)

on a highly related note: do you think warp will be possible in between separated pylon power fields? alot easier to balance if it was not..

if it IS possible, p gateway units will be all over the palce all the time... one pylon at a strategic position; propper scouting of enemy movement = potentially flawless flanking..... hard to balance; would need sth like energy on pylons to detirmine how many units could be warped to it how fast and / or quite fragile pylons witch would be bad in otehr ways

an exciting topic IMO, if a bit premature but anyhting to kill time in wait for more sc2 news!

Interesting question imo. A few facts:

Quoted from the gameplay demo:
"The Protoss can use Warp In to teleport units anywhere they want into pylon power"

However, after the Stalkers died in the demo, you can see 2 Phase Prisms deploy. You should also notice that the extra field, created by the Prisms, overlaps with an existing Pylon field from the home base.

So actually, we can't say anything... Both are possible until Blizzard confirms otherwise. I hope you're right though, and the warping is only possible through adjacent power fields.

Reply#1 You mean, that adjacent pylons will make some kind of "road" between the pylon which power will be used to teleport units and gateway?

Kinda, yes.

However, this would reduce the possibilities to reinforce a fighting army on the spot... I think it's "anywhere" after all. Maybe a maximum teleport distance or something though.

I think it'll be like you can fly a phase prism anywhere on the map and then warp units from your base. Thats how they said it atleast, we'll see how they configure it due to the balance tho

mmm.... From watching the demo I thought it was more like the warp-gate holds the units and can then drop them into pylon power. Not units within pylon power can teleport around wherever they want.
I dunno, I just figured it would be somthing like deepstrike (from dow) except only around pylons.

I dunno, ...

this was my reflection also. Question remains, will unis not trained in a warpgate be able to ENTER one - so that tehy can also be warped? if so, gateway units only or any ground units? even air units?

This might answer your question: http://www.starcraft2.com/screenshot.xml?7

And this: http://www.starcraft2.com/features/protoss/

Read the "Gateway/Warpgate"-explanation.

#7 : ok yeah, i see, at the state of it it seems things can be wapred to any pylon or pace prism anywhere. However, at this point i highly doubt such things are set in stone, its well worth speaking of the possibilities around this....

Okay so you have to produce a unit from an updated gateway (warp gate) and then you just set where you want it to to emerge.
Functionally a warp gate is similar to a gateway in that both devices open a spatial rift. However, protoss forces moving through a gateway must emerge in close proximity to the structure, whereas those summoned via a warp gate can be projected to any part of the battlefield that lies within the psionic matrix.

Even if you can only produce units anywhere it doesn't make much difference.
In the Blizz video you could see those moving pylons warping in some zealots in few seconds.
Imo if this is the actual game mechanic it would lead to toss spending no money on units. Just wait for Terran to push out and produce flanking groups anywhere. Hope they get rid of this it really seems imba.

Did you see the stats on the phase prisms? If I recall correctly, they have 40 shield and 100 hit points. That's not much. These things will have to be careful, you've all seen that it takes some amount of time to change from phasing mode back into normal mode. If you catch one as it's changing to phasing mode you should be able to take it out pretty quickly.

Their loss.

No way you'll be able to produce units ANYWHERE... possibly anywher in the power field of a pylon or phace prism.

#11 : i did see those stats... pretty weak yes.. far from risk free to relly on for reinforcments in the midst of a battle... pylons however, are undoubtably ougher, adn cheaper... if a pylon doesnt even need to be "conected" with the warpgate un question (tru "the same" psionic matrix) ... pylons scattered across the map would give p gateway units completely unmatched mobility.

i think, o balanace this out, pylons owuld have to become a considerable ammount more fragile and mb more expensive too.... witch owuld in turm possibly open up for the pylons being quite pron for harassment witch im not srue how i feel about... ofocurse, the warping ability could also be used to counter such harassment, but maybe the gateway units wont cut it for defending against all kinds of pylon harassment ....

for reference about the ahrassment; OL harassment in SC is fine, but IMHO burrow harassment (aka burrow raping) in wc3 is alot more... unpleasant. (probably since burows cant scatter or move away while they are also a bit more expensive relatively speaking)

Look at the screen on bottom of page: http://www.starcraft2.com/features/protoss/ .For now it seems that you can warp in soldiers anywhere on the map (u just need to have phase prism / pylon there).

i think blizzard will sooner or later abandon this idea of warping protoss units via a pylon or a phase prism. it seems impossible to balance

Yeah, if this was added to BW.

I dont see how this would imbalance things... It doesnt seem that much different to arbiters in regard to randomly dropping into someones base.
Also, you couldnt just drop units straight into their tank formations... how would you get a pylon or phase prism there?

Nydus Worms are almost the same thing, so I don't see how this would be overly "imbalanced". It just means gameplay in Starcraft 2 will be different from that of Brood War. You can't expect everything to stay the same...

I'm just wondering if Terrans will have anything in addition to their drop-ships. But Blizzard may want to define the differences between each race. Not just make them mirrors of each other and give same abilities different names.

Im pretty sure prism will be some high-tech unit so i dont think that toss will be able to build it before terr push ;)

Phase Prism's power ability in conjunction with Warp Gates allows Protoss to quickly field reinforcements

Source:
http://starcraft2.com/features/protoss/index.xml?tab=gateway

The text under the pic clearly states that the phase prisms' themselves, and the picture also shows that they can teleport atleast anywhere.

Yeah, Warp Gate may be very high in the tech tree, and Protoss got a recall abillity in BW. I think it might work.
