hypotethical sc2 mothership mirror (2511 reads, 31 replies)

Reading a little in some foum thread critical towards the mothership, i came across one post using the argument that PvP would be a very lame MU given the notion that once players got motherships, the first one to use black hole on the enemy m-ship would get a too big advantage...

I foudn the toppic instresting enought and wrote up a longer than intended reply that didnt get recognized becuase of the general messyness of the thread. so im recycling it here. i realzie this is all very hypothetical, but i find
such speculation a good way to make the wait easier... here it goes:

Did you notice how the BC's in the video could finish charging up & fiering their yamoto gun even while getting sucked into the hole? ... surely the same thing would go for the black hole... there'd be enought time for reaction or ping not to matter. obviously thought, players would be carefull not to cluster their air units, until maybe their oponent got pressured in to using too much m-ship energy to afford (an additional?) black hole....

all in all i think high-tech PvP with dual motherships could be a intresting & complex enought matchup.... The mothershop would be strong when it had energy &/or when it was at the right place at the right time but all in all probably not too diminant in games that would have been close wihtout m-ships too.... Again about the "black hole mirror" situation; M-ships will probably either be immune to the holes, or have plenty of time to "cast it back" in high-energy m-ship encounters.

with this in mind, how would a m-ship mirror turn out?

players would probably avoid engaging in m-ship mirror battles, even from using black hole (soley to kill the enemy m-ship) when faced with such battles, for as long as they think they can make better use of their own mother ship.... with close confident players battling, this may mean a long/repeated battles around the dual m-ships, leaving the two mothers purposly at about the same health since as soon as one player feels its m-ship is at too much of a disadvantage, the player will even the score with initiating an exchange of black holes .... (all this assuming there'd be no disabling or energy-affecting special abilities for p in sc2) sure seems intresting & complex enought to me..!

im not entierly sure what would make someone want to build a motehrship in such a mirror match.. since its expensive, maybe simply the player who thinks he has an eco advantage..? if someone is making more money to begin with, having a m-ship killed in exchange for an enemy m-ship isnt a bad trade, planet cracker and timebomb are clearly of alot more use on "offensive ground" (else-where, enemies can jsut back away..?) so the player to get one first may get a window to pull some nice offensive move (tho if he fails to take advantage in a close game, it'll prolly cost him)

it probably often be plausible to counter enemy motehrships without brining your own though... with map control, it aught to be quite easy to wear down "in the open" with hit 'n runs ... if it did arrive at an offensive position it may well "crack" that propperly, but then what 'd stop the enemy m-ship 'less P to either contrer-attack (on base) or mobilize a mothership-trashing assult of some kind (when the m-ship was lower on energy, with supperior general firepower due to not spending cash on an m-ship...) hit'n runs &/or flanking would help with this

finally i'd like to add that i also, would like to see less "muscled" abilities TRIED to replace black hole & / or planet cracker.. (but i think it can work out as showed in demo too)

gj reading this far if ou did and i hope you see / share my vision about m-ship mirror and the m-ship in genral.. i really think it can fit the P race really well and be a nice balanced non marginalized part of SC2...

Peace.

Mothership vs Mothership could just be as often seen as you see BC vs BC or Carrier vs Carrier fights nowadays. By the time your mothership finishes, and the upgrades for it, and its energy charged, the enemy may have very well scouted you and be perfectly prepared, so you lose the game in a second. Don't worry, mothership vs mothership is the last thing blizzard has on it's mind in terms of polishing. They got more important stuff on their minds, first - but because ITS BLIZZARD we're talking about, they will get to PvP late game also. It will be balance (lol obviously) since it's mirror, and I'm 100% sure Blizzard will throw in one or two minor details that will make PvP interesting enough.

I have another idea for you:

What if, in PvP, you can MIND CONTROL the enemy MOTHERSHIP?? That would be LAME.

... as I was reading, I realized one thing that struck me ...

you are perfectly right! ...
in PvP today, many/most people have Dark Archons in super-lategame. Are the DA's used to mind control or feedback each other? No. They are used to feedback templar.

So, I think your line of thinking is right ... PvP superlategame, it'll be Planet Cracker + Shield, not Black Hole the other MotherShip

minus_human, according to mothership description, they are whole flying cities. So I dont think there will be such possibility to mind control all citizens of this big ship // battle station ;)

Think of chess. You have the Queen there. Very powerful. But if you're in a favorable position you might choose to sacrifice it to be able to take your opponents Queen and end up in a even more favorable situation.
Anyway, I don't think it'll be a problem. :)

Well it was just a joke, of course MC-ing a mothership would be bad. Same goes for Lockdown on a mothership - it is plain ridiculous to see a whole 'city', or anyways, something THAT large fall useless at the feet of a mere Dark Archon or Ghost.

The mothership will never be used... EVER o.O;

in PvP WarpRays will own the mothership too easily; with a little scout if you know your opponent is going for MS then you can easily take her down with 4~5 warprays since the mothership is a very large unit.

In PvT 5 BC doing Yamato Gun should take out the mothership in one blow.

Im not too sure about PvZ but im sure zerg will also have something that will easily kill the MS.

yes... same with lockdown MC and feedback. . . but would it rally make sence to make m-ships completely immune to such abilities? i dont really like the sound of that... some kind of dynamic effects would probably be better. . . . there are many options as far as that goes.

You don't really have any reason to believe that DT's are out (or in I guess), so don't make any assumption based on that. :P

#8 is right, but it'll still require some micro.... black hole will easily rape a group of warp rays or battlecruisers, but i still believe that this will require the mothership to play safe and tactically rather then running up in the middle of a battle attacking everything in sight.... and maybe because the mothership is a super-unit it might be resistant to black hole??

i agree with #6.... sc is considered a modern day game of chess, and i think with sc2 it will be even more so

we have a good idea that dt's WILL be around (not sure about DA's)

1. Zeratul is going to be in the story
2. Protoss abandoned Auir, moved to Shakiras.

Both of those indicate that the dark templar are going to be a dominating force on the protoss side.

dunno why everyone is scared of the mother ship, even BW units could take that thing down no problem. EMP + Lockdown = Dead mother ship, and zerg would just scourge em to death. As soon as it pops its black hole, its defenseless since it has no energy. If you ask me, the only good ability it has is the time-bomb. As long as you dont mass all your ships together, black hole is nothing to worry about. And planet cracker is just the base-destroyer.

number 3, 100% agree.
Ms vs MS is same as BC vs BC as templar vs templar, as DA vs DA, with the diffrence that black hole may be launched whilke sucked (in theory) and then grab some aditional units, and since its vs slow, enemie might micro his MS while hit u with warp rays, untill u bring more uints there also to kill warp rays b4 loosing mohership, witch the again would be like dev vs dev or mut vs mut, so should me np :D (btw like after 10 online games all p will keep his MS at base for holding counters anyway cus that new teleport stuff will take too long vs mass lings or good terra siege, so np, it will be really cool )
