Wemade Fox threatens to quit Kespa

Posted by Simon "Go0g3n" 3 years ago
A strong request or an ultimatum if you will was issued earlier by the famous progaming team Wemade Fox to OGN (Ongamenet Broadcasting Company). The issue was caused by OGN’s sponsorship ties with a beer company. Considering that almost half of E-Sports viewing audience are minors, it was deemed unethical by team Wemade Fox, therefore initiating an ultimatum and a motion to quit the Association altogether.

This step also means serious consequences for team’s players, especially top ones like Nada and Mind, as their progaming acknowledgement will be revoked and replaced with semi-progaming, which is an automatic ban from participating in any Kespa events, such as MSL, OSL and SPL, leaving only WCG, Gom and private tournaments available to compete in.

The only option for Wemade players who may be interested in continuing their professional Starcraft careers is to move to the other team or switch the profile game. In this context more than interesting sounds the rumor that Wemade FOX may be adding a team branch for Avalon Online, an MMORPG with Warcraft III RTS elements, developed by Wemade, a Korean game developer who happens to be team’s owner and main supporter.

At this very moment Avalon is being heavily advertised and promoted in Korea. The dedicated league for Avalon is already in the preliminaries stage; it’s sponsored by Coca Cola’s Powerade and has a prize pool of over $17.500. In addition Avalon is named to be the sponsor of 17th MSL season.

Update:

As it turns out the ultimatum was issued not by the team itself, but by it's parent company Wemade. Although the basis for the protest is presented as ethical, it may have something to do with Wemade's current financial troubles. If their new game Avalon doesn't catch up, it may as well be the company's swan song. Rumor has it that Wemade Fox, if financial troubles are to come, may sell one of it's top Starcraft players to any other team in order to make the ends meet and keep the team afloat.

wtf.......... nadaaaaaaaa , nooooooooo

Whats wrong with freaking wemade?!
What kind of a reason is this?
Guess they just wanna f*** with starcraft to promote their own product

Cant believe you people agree with them. like people are gonna be drinking because one of the pro teams has hite as its sponsor.
Alcohol is part of culture anyways, like that's gonna make anything worse.

It's not Wemade Foxes business to decide which sponsor OGN should take.

The owner of Wemade IS the creator of Avalon. We can expect to see NaDa owning newbies in Avalon tournaments very soon.

Wemade SC players were raped by Korean WC3 All-Stars already at OGN.

lol its quite silly i think

im not sure about football just now, but i know when i actively watched it, the big leagues were sponsored by beer companies. now saying thats ok, and this particular case is not.. i dont get it.

its a sport. sport is not limited to only male or female, over 18 or under 18, black , white or yellow ( excuse the racist terms! ).
so to say their audience is minors, is really stupid.

thats all in my opinion anyway. il still have a heinekin tho ... o,o

isn't it strange that GG.net has such a controversial article up on its main page while none of the major korean sites such as fomos or fifo are reporting anything of this sort.

no source is given in the article, either.

i could be mistaken though, so cite your source please.

14# has it. Buissness is buissness.
If don't think Kespa will do anything about OGN's sponsor, but I hope Wemade stays.

Trust me, a starcraft league having a beer company isn't gonna inspire minors to drink. They gonna try n drink no matter what's goin on.

#24 dooki 3 years ago
they should have gotten a few more teams who would withdraw for the same reason. i dont think 1 team is going to make them change their mind about a huge beer sponsor.

It's stupid that the players may lose their lisence becouse of this..

Why does WeMade care? Lots of minors watch sporting events on TV and those are full of advertisements for beer and such things. I mean, having a drinking age is silly anyway but that's a whole other topic.

"Wow Mind owned that guy, beer must make you good at SC, I should break the law." I see what they're thinking.
1
#30 aimaimaim 3 years ago
they will use progamers to attract minors to drink..

so what? its not american hypocrite-ness, its just a dumb move by wemade.. now, they made their own problem w/c could have been avoided if they just ignored OGN's move and just let the fans/viewers think about it, if OGN's move was good or bad..
1
#31 gamemirage 3 years ago
the obvious and only solution is to have an anti alcohol corporation sponsor the top team so that whenever they play wemadefox a new policemen is born.

#32 Vp.MrOw 3 years ago
then what....WeMade.Fox.Greenpeace.Savethechildren.Oxfam.Nada...

this is retarded if wemade expects us to believe that it's quitting kespa over this...

#34 MyTHicaL 3 years ago
wtf who cares if there minors? let the beer flow like water the kids are going to get drunk someday... they should take a more european view of this problem

#35 Go0g3n 3 years ago
As far as i see it, their contracts with Top players like Nada, Moon, Mind have been signed a while back when the economy was shining, therefore nobody was counting cash.

The Beer advertising thing is tricky, especially in countries with alcohol problems (though i am not sure S.Korea is one of them). Obviously those kids or any1 who wants a drink will find one, but those who are "undecided", mostly kids, can become victims of advertising. It's like McDonalds (or any fast food), it's all shiny and bright, it tastes fine so there's no way a kid can know how dangerous it actually is until told so.

In TV, Alcohol Ad at TV is prohibited at 07:00~22:00 in Korea. also Cannot sell to youth(less than 20 in Korean age / who is learning at school[primary/middle/high]).
