Blizzard releases Authenticator Application for iPhone and iPod Touch

Posted by Jimmy "DJTyrant" Blocksom 3 years ago

Blizzard has released a mobile application for their authenticator to be used with the newly released Battle.net accounts.

Currently the only game to use the authentication is World of WarCraft, but StarCraft II and Diablo III are planned to have the same log-in system and be attached to this same Battle.net account. The authenticator makes it so that everytime you log-in to your account (via WoW, SC2, D3, or the Battle.net website) after entering your username and password it asks you for a unique code that the authenticator generates, which expires in about 30 seconds, allowing you peace of mind for your Battle.net account. Be aware though this DOES NOT protect your current Battle.net account for StarCraft, WarCraft III, or Diablo I/II.

The authenticator application essentially replaces the hardware version that was released earlier this year for added security for World of WarCraft accounts. The device is no longer in the Blizzard Store at the time of this story as it was consistently out of stock.

It looks as if the application was created to help ease demand or even replace the current authenticator.

For iPhone / iPod Touch users, this is a nice way to add a layer of security to your account and it is on a device that is constantly with you!

The application is free and is currently live in the US iTunes store, with a launch soon for Europe and Asia.

If you haven't signed up for the new Battle.net account, why not do so now! If you're planning on buying StarCraft II or Diablo III it would be great to get the account setup now and avoid the rush of launch day of setting up accounts! You can also add you StarCraft, StarCraft: Brood War, Diablo II, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, WarCraft III and WarCraft III: Frozen Throne CD Key's to the new account and have the keys saved and a digital download for you game on the site and in your account! For free (if you have a legitimate CD Key).

For the moment this is only available for iPhone and iPod Touch users, but it would be no stretch of the imagination to think that this will be coming to other mobile devices as well.

The purpose of this is for account security. For many people WoW is a lifestyle. If you've ever played an MMO you'll know why this is important.

Anyways, nice idea. Looks neat, I don't want it D:

#4 No its not for those. With this not only you have to type in password, but each time you use the authenticator you get a random number you must type in aswell. (I think) So if you are keylogged by some retard he wont be able to access ur account, because he wont have the randomly generated number the authenticator makes^^

You have to be a HUGE RETARD not to understand the purpose of this program..as the dude above said,if someone keylogges you or by some unfortunate event you get your computer infected with dunno what variant of back-door programs or other stuff like that,one of the 1st things you`ll loose is your WoW user&password..it`s hard to find original freebies these days for this game...but i guess that people who use cracked games don`t fully understand the meaning of original nor do they know how it`s like to play an MMORPG.Great idea by Blizz and i honestly hope they`ll improve more in the future.
P.S.If in Romania a iPhone can be bought at 200-250 USD 2nd hand,don`t tell me in Germany or anywhere else it`s more expensive(or you only like to have newly bought phones?=)) )

... why would u spend 200 USD on a phone? a phone is for phoning (and i guess texting comes in handy 2) but all the other gizmos are just too much...
better to invest ur 200$ in drugs and start a buisness xd;

As exhale pointed out.. the security factor is the real point of this app. For all of you unaware of what a "Keylogger" is... you won't understand why this app is so powerful. WoW account theft is all too common.

Would be nice if I still had my ipod touch <.<

@MyTHicaL
Expensive phones like the iphone usually have really nice software hacks or hardware mods for them. A lot of people like to jail break their iphones or upload custom software to them. Some people don't want "just phones" and would like something else at hand like instant messaging, mp3 and video ability, internet, and phone service all in one place that is easy to access. The iphone is a good place to start with that. I can understand where you are coming from though, because I was in the same exact place as you, until I got an ipod touch (I got it cheap) which I then fell in love with (the few days that I did have it until it was stolen back from me.) <.<

Hopefully this comes out on the instinct before SC2 comes out. Reminds me of approving all your credit card transactions by phone, which I heard has been used in Korea for some.

This is a pretty sweet idea for those that don't already have the authenticator. I still use the one I got at BlizzCon 08 in the goodie bag, but might consider buying/downloading this to use instead.
