StarCraft back this DreamHack Summer season

After a quick StarCraft break on DreamHack Winter 2008, the game is now back in full force. We also present, as GosuGamers is the tournament organization, a new tournament format.

With a prize pot worth 4,500€ (50,000 SEK) we are proud to present StarCraft back in the DreamHack Summer season. With its return, we have changed the tournament format to a set of qualifiers that will follow up with a playoffs at DreamHack Summer.

Our first qualifier will kick off at DreamHack Skellefteå at March 6th to 8th. The winner will be granted a wildcard to the playoffs at DreamHack Summer 2009.

Secondly, we will have a second offline qualifier at an unknown place and date at the time. Just like in Skellefteå, one wildcard will be given to the winner for a spot in the playoffs DreamHack Summer 2009.

For those who have trouble attending offline events, we will also hold two online tournaments where each winner will grab a wildcard for the playoffs.

And last but not least, we will host an offline qualifier on spot in Jönköping during the first days at DreamHack Summer, taking place June 13th to 16th. The top 4 will qualify for the playoffs where the previous wildcard winners await.

The playoffs will be played on tournament computers in a single elimination best of three (best of five for grand final) format.

Note: The wildcards won gains entry to DreamHack Summer 2009 and a spot in the playoffs. Travel expenses are not paid out. Neither are you granted a computer spot at the tables at DreamHack.

Prizes: 1 wildcard directly to the playoffs on DreamHack Summer.

Qualifier 3:

Place: Online
Date: To be announced
Open for: 64 players
Format: Bracket, Single elimination BO3, grand final BO5. BYOC
Prizes: 1 wildcard directly to the playoffs on DreamHack Summer.

Qualifier 4:

Place: DreamHack Summer 2009 Jönköping (offline)
Date: 13-16 juni
Open for: 64 players
Format: Bracket, Single elimination BO3. BYOC
Prizes: 4 wildcards directly to the playoffs on DreamHack Summer.

Grand Final

Place: DreamHack Summer 2009 Jönköping
Date: 13-16 juni
Open for: 8 players
Format: Bracket, Single elimination BO3, grand final BO5. To be played on tournament computers
Prizes: Total worth of 50 000 SEK (4,500€)

Probably not. Unless I'm totally off-track these qualifications are merely the way in which Gosugamers chose to run the tournament.

no way they gonna get enough ppl, travel expenses are what matters, very few ppl are able/willing to invest into that.

That is only partly a good news. No team outside Sweden will bring its players to those qualifiers and later again to the finals. It means the team would have to pay 2 flights, 2 times hotel costs, etc. Even though the prize money ain't bad, it is a pretty risky thing for a team as long as its player doesn't win.

I don't know whoever had this idea and whatever he thought that should be good for. Sure, if you want a tournament with almost Swedish players only what means you won't have any top player from Europe (no offense to Swedeish players <3), then this format is the right choice.

The good thing is the online qualifier though where maybe 1-2 none Swedish guys will try to make their way to Dreamhack. But anyways, we will have mass Swedish players there that are competing against 1-2 players that are not from Sweden which get their trip sponsored... overall that lowers the quality of the tournament massive since Sweden has right now maybe only a hand full of good players.

Well, maybe I shouldn't take it too hard, overall it won't change too much about the whole player lineup at Dreamhack right? If Strelok or Advokate wanna go there they may win one of the qualifiers... and already the last times we had mass Swedish players plus 1-2 non Swedish guys from sponsored teams. GoGo Dreamhack :)

#18 They can play at the Qualifyer #5 that will be at same dates. So there will be only one trip for them..

#19: Are there also already qualified players allowed again?

I mean, imagine: mTw sends a player there, they pay his trip and all, and he doesn't qualify then in the qualifier no 5... it would be so bad for them. But there will be still that online qualifier that gives only 1 spot...

#The1Crow: There's two online tournaments open for anyone, and then it's the qualifier at DreamHack Summer that we'll place on the 13th or 14th also open for anyone, so that we have time enough to enjoy the nice playoff.

There's really no difference compared to last summer, only that there are four players from earlier qualifiers wildcarded already into the quarter finals.

It's also good, since the pre-qualified players now don't have to bring their computers to DreamHack since it will be played on tournament computers.

#26 I guess anyone can enter the "Qualifier 5"(where the four best will be qualified) at dreamhack. And the actual tournament starts at dreamhack (after the last qualifier).

So, 8 Players are seeded through qualifiers, what about the other 8? Since it says 16 players.

Yeah sry LoC I realized I read it from one of the qualifiers not the actual tournament ;O So it's gonna be a 8-man tour? o,o

Huk? really?
Imagine a draw where 2 starcraft big stars crash themselves for the 1st round... one of them can be directly eliminated after only two games whereas he could reach to the top 4 easily if he didnt play this opponent so early. In my opinion It must be a double elimination bracket. I doubt MYM or others teams will send more of 2 of their players if they have to fight themselves (in bo3) just to qualify for the main event.
