StarCraft 2 to be a Trilogy!

From many sources, it seems our beloved sequel will be divided into 3 releases. Each game (not expansion) will play host to a specific race's campaign and possibly multiplayer additions or changes.

StarCraft II's 3 seperate campaigns
- "Wings of Liberty" 1st Release
- "Heart of the Swarm" 2nd Installation
- "Legacy of the Void" Final Addition

The news comes to a shock to many fans - whom of which have been expecting a full sequel for the past 10 years. This will obviously change the release date so that the first campaign and multiplayer can be released earlier than expected so Blizzard can work on what it seems like, other projects. Without much speculating, it could free up their staff for other projects, or this could allow the SC2 team to focus on simultaneously finishing different parts of the story or multiplayer additions.

New Screenshots

Terran forces move through a shallow river - A new feature to the StarCraft universe.

Zerg and Terran forces battle it out on a narrow installation entrance.
"[The second and third games] will be like expansion packs, but we really want them to feel like standalone products..."

Quote from Blizzard's Rob Pardo

One thing I do admire from this step, is Blizzard's trust in us to stay with their game. This may not be a bad step as long as Blizzard delivers a full, unhindered (in many aspects) game with each release. You can obviously expect more lore, storyline, and excellent multiplayer patches ahead of us!

This is fun as hell...
Imagine if they did that with W4 (when it comes out)
That would mean 4x50$ xD

This guys are SMART...and incredibly stupid if they think I will pay 150$ to pay campaign...i don't want to sound like criminal, but if I can play multiplayer with only 1 bought game, I will just dl other 2 campaigns rather than pay for them....sorry, but I really don't have enough money to pay for every expansion they give...except if they will wait 6 months between every "expansion"....

#33 said it all.

This is merely a move to gain more money from customers for a game.
And guys, think it over: Do you expect Blizzard to release only Campaigns for the other 2 releases? I think Blizzard wont do so. It is common knowledge, that maybe only 25-40% of possible Customers would buy such a "expansion". All other´s would stick to the first release and ignore the others (or get them illegal).
As Blizzard knows this, every release will contain new units and MP relevant stuff as well, so everybody is nicely paying for every part a good price (in blizzard´s eye´s...)

This sucks.

It's funny that they know we hate and still we're too addicted that even we hate this thing like hell most of us buy those games anyway.

It's almost like abusing the scene ;P

i wonder why so many people don't or don't want to understand:
everyone that is just interested in the multiplayer buys the first game, end of story. no changes in the multiplayer in future "episodes", just new campaigns. i also think because there are to groups of starcraft players (those who only play online and don't care about the campaign and those who play the campaign and are interested in the story), i think it would be good if blizzard releases sc2 in two versions: one cheaper and just with the multiplayer for those who just play online (this could be destributed via some steam-like online network) and the normal version with the first campagin.
i also wonder why a lot of people want a campaign to pratice the races. i mean, in broodwar you could hardly do the same strategies in single player als in multiplayer - you have to think in another way, so why it is so necessary to get a singleplayer campaign with your favourite race? why is just playing online and skrimish matches against the ai (which i think will be possible) not enough to learn the races?
also, no one said that the 2nd and 3rd game will cost 50€. i think that blizzard knows that they can't sell it with that price, maybe more the cost of an expansion pack (25 - 30€). but the campaign must be really awesome if they want to sell a good number of copies. i will only buy them if the cost/content ration is good, otherwise i will wait. for me the campaign is more important (also because i have a crappy internet connection which is not suitable for playing online) that multiplayer, i will wait and see what blizzard is doing. if they're doing right, i will get all episodes, if they're doing wrong, they have to wait for my money =)

Good idea, because many players don't buy starcraft for single player, but making people able to buy 3 different releases of starcraft with a more extensive single player for each. Very good idea.

Some people buy 3 starcraft CDs just for the keys. This is not a problem at all. Very good move, this will keep single player fans very happy, I believe.

even thou you have to pay the 3 games, what you should want?, wait more to the release, like 2 years more, or have three parts or the other he said that was cutting the history and making it less enjoyable. i like sc multiplayer , i play it a lot, but i also enjoy its history, so perhaps blizzard sounds greedy but its the only option they have , because they want to make a full epic history and the other two solutions are too bad since we will have to wait more and etc. besides i think you are being selfish , cause i know you have money to buy in other fucking shit and not 150 bucks who is very less compared to me amount of shit you spend yearly. so why are you crying about it, i think its fine they do this , you can also buy the first one , and copy the other two without spending a cent on the other two. i will buy the three cause i know i will enjoy this at the end besides you arent poor people stop whinning like you were poor, i bet all of you have more money than me and i can buy this.

Ah for fucks sake ppl - stop making idiotic excuses for blizzard - an extensive single player doesn't need to be 3 different boxes with 3 prices - all the campaigns and movies you can imagine could be squished into a double layer double sided DVD disk or a blue ray - considering how that technology advances and given blizzards constant delays on every release - blue ray will be a standard on every computer when they'll finally release it ~~ Or even having the game on 8 CDs doesn't mean selling each CD separetly - so pull your fucking hands off your eyes - the goal of that move is pure simple - TO MAKE MORE MONEY OUT OF IT - blizzard is shitting their panths - they know SC has very radical conservative fans that will not go for any "kinda new WC3 shit with all singing and all dancing bullshit units and themes from most B class sci fi movies" - SCBW is almost perfect as an RTS - and they know nothing they make will outdo it - so untill they can fill the budget gap with Diablo 3 - it's best for them to back themselves up in case SC II turns out to be crap in the eyes of the whole community and count on curious 10 year old kids that have never played SC to buy SCII to check it out and pay 3 times for it instead once.

The sadest thing is, and I do agree with #54 - Blizz knows SC has so many fans having waited for so long that even if they'd start selling empty boxes with SCII written on the front - we would still buy it - and this is the biggest bullshit of all the things revolving around Blizz and SCII.

Ah gotta give that to ppl who said it - it is true they want to release SCII as fast as possible but since they don't have much they wanna cut it like that - but still it's an economic decision based on pure greed - nothing to do with caring about the fans and the community whitch has been faithfull for a decade. They do want to release something, even if its not completed coz they have no rolling franchise atm exept WOW whitch isn't making enough to sustain such a huge company. Be reminded that nowdays almost nobody buys WOW - we all have it already so the profit is limited strictly to fees for playing on Blizzes WOW servers. All in all FUCK YOU GREEDY BLIZZARD : [

All the ppl who made Blizz into what it is today - guys who made Diablo 1 and SC are long gone from the company - so have no illusions - SCII is aimed for $ and nothing else as well as it's being made by a bunch of ppl who never had sex and as a result came about making WC3 and calling it a worthy RTS. ~~

It's gonna be funny tough - now a zealot will make a rainbow every time he slashes anything on the screen - just like your WOW and WC3 spells TT' and we're all gonna go "oh - would you look at that ! : ["

P.S. just look at the Siege Tank - they redone it once already and it still makes me throw up every time I see it - "Crucio Siege Tank" - omfg - those are the guys we are dealing with here. GG no re.

ah one other thing - with intels Core i7 up and coming VERY soon Blizz found themselves stuck with a game aimed for a already outdated technology - they know that most products that will be made for Core i7 platform will probably crush SCII in every aspect - that may very well be another reason why they wanna get it on the market asap. Still bullshit to me. Blizz eat shit and die for ruining your best franchise.

P.S. sry I'll try to make it into one post nxt time - just made it up as I went this time. :x

Gona be awesome.. You will be able to play with all races on multiplayer mode but in campaign each set will contain 1 race's story mode.

maybe blizzard is greedy but sorry to offend but sc has the most annoying community ever , for every single change , there are complaints about this , about that and etc. and why they should listen to us? who we are? we only play sc for fun, they should listen to the koreans who give their lives for this game.
so if they want to sell 6 expansions we should learn to STFU and deal with it, its just a f&%&$ng game,i am tired of everyone complaining, we spent like a lot of dollars in partying per year why not 150 bucks not even a year its like 50 per year or something.

THis is really good news for me! I mainly want multiplayer anyway, and this way the game will be released sooner. Will be nice to get a new campaign to fool around in every year or so. I love this.

This is really sad....
I just realised what some guys above were saying...every new "expansion" will probably get extra content for multiplayer, which basically means we will HAVE TO buy them in order to play with others. It's just like Starcraft, you can play original, but you don't have MANY units unless you have broodwar...
Kinda gay move from blizz, but what is there to expect in world where everything goes around the money....

LOOOOOOOOOOOL

What are u stuipd or sth ?

I LOVE BLIZZARD for doing this!

They simply are showing to us how much they care for this game to be awasome. and how much they care about their fans. I personaly would hate the fact that some parts of this amazing story line were cut out. And now they secure the fact that not just nothing will be cut out but also that the release date wont be deleyd any more. BLIZZARD simply love they game even more than we do, and they couldn't stand the possibiliete of cuting things out of it.
STARCRAT 2 would be SOOO EPIC GAME. I LOVE BLIZZARD FOR IT !

#63 Maybe not everyone wants to waste 150$ on a game? Ok honestly 150$ is not that much money nowdays but it takes me less then 5 hours to finish the single player campain. Assuming they will make some really long and interesting campains it still wont take me more then 10 hours to finish a protoss campain. And im sorry but im just not willing to spend 50$ on a game that i will play for 10 hours especially since i can download it anyway. Lets face it, probably 90% of people download their games, at least the single player ones. And blizzard knows that so #55 you really think blizzard wont make any changes in multi player? Comon they aint stupid. I mean yea you can play starcraft w/o broodwar but then you can play it by yourself cuz every1's playing broodwar.

#75 what you wrote is the same exact bullshit you came up with a couple posts before. Naive kid. Gaming is a multi million industry - having a nice excuse for 3 releases doesn't change the fact what's it really all about. And don't call me "dude", you sound like some dumb american youth culture wannabe.

rofl i think this means that they are done with making terran and almost done with protoss, but they arent anywhere near done with zerg yet.... so what they will do, is just release the campaign for T with no multiplayer at all, then P again with no multiplayer, and then when they finish making zerg in like 2 years, they will release that campaign and b.net sc2 will start then T_T_T_T_T WOW THIS IS GAY
