StarCraft 2 to be a Trilogy!

From many sources, it seems our beloved sequel will be divided into 3 releases. Each game (not expansion) will play host to a specific race's campaign and possibly multiplayer additions or changes.

StarCraft II's 3 seperate campaigns
- "Wings of Liberty" 1st Release
- "Heart of the Swarm" 2nd Installation
- "Legacy of the Void" Final Addition

The news comes to a shock to many fans - whom of which have been expecting a full sequel for the past 10 years. This will obviously change the release date so that the first campaign and multiplayer can be released earlier than expected so Blizzard can work on what it seems like, other projects. Without much speculating, it could free up their staff for other projects, or this could allow the SC2 team to focus on simultaneously finishing different parts of the story or multiplayer additions.

New Screenshots

Terran forces move through a shallow river - A new feature to the StarCraft universe.

Zerg and Terran forces battle it out on a narrow installation entrance.
"[The second and third games] will be like expansion packs, but we really want them to feel like standalone products..."

Quote from Blizzard's Rob Pardo

One thing I do admire from this step, is Blizzard's trust in us to stay with their game. This may not be a bad step as long as Blizzard delivers a full, unhindered (in many aspects) game with each release. You can obviously expect more lore, storyline, and excellent multiplayer patches ahead of us!

haha RTS game in a trilogy.... wow..

so in multiplayer
if we only buy the 1st one (Terran), we can only play TvT, TvZ or TVP ?? or worst.. only TvT?? if the 1st game doesn't include evry units from the other races...

..weird

so imma jump on this conclusion: blizz wants more $$$ to survive the coming economic crisis O_O

"What does this mean?
- Nothing changes for multiplayer and skirmish. All three races will be fully implemented.
- Each campaign should feel like an epic story, not be a cliffhanger into the next one.
- More content than we previously planned (Movies, Missions, Etc)."

If anyone was wondering, the last phrase (in the newspost) in bold is utter sarcasm.

#14 champignones 3 years ago
nothing change in multiplayer , they said it will be nearly the same with a little balancing so i think its a good decision, they will focus on the terran campaign , so that they make SC2 a more complete storyline.

It really comes down to scope. "We always start with this really gigantic scope", Sigaty explained.

It really comes down to scope. "We always start with this really gigantic scope", Sigaty explained.

Now when I think about it comments like this from StarCraft II lead producer Chris Sigaty as well as the casual friendly design track, really show that Blizzard is afraid of losing casual RTS market share to it's competitors. I think Blizzard's actions make a lot of sense when you look at what Relic Entertainment is doing with Dawn of War 2. I think Blizzard took a look at it and said to themselves" Wow, we are not competitive!"

They will each have their own campaigns, and those campaigns can be played co-operatively. The single-player campaign is built around a non-linear succession of missions, at least as far as the Space Marines are concerned, where the player hops from planet to planet in a starship, responding to distress beacons and battling enemies in an attempt to remove a galactic threat.

To release a product they feel is competitive within a reasonable period of time, they decided on multiple expansions like Dawn of War.

So basicly they will give us the game ready for multiplayer, but to play other campaigns we're gonna have to pay another 50 dollars :/ Patches will be necessary anyway, but now we will have to pay for them because they will contain campaign and new videos... blizzard SUX!!

It is possible that each extra campaign will bring multiplayer changes similar to a new patch that might require you to have it to play people who already do.

The business model seems to work in WoW, where the higher levels need a new purchase (on top of the monthly fee) and also for DoW, which now has like 14 playable races or something.

If they expect me to play 150$ for the full game I must say I am dismayed. These better be fucking great campaigns. I better see twists, turns, epic fights and player involvement, and somehow care about the characters the whole way through.

The truth is that I will probably end up paying for them either way, as long as the multiplayer in the first one is anywhere near SC.

EDIT: Why are their terran arbiters in the SS?

#18 NastyMarine 3 years ago
I also hate that they will probably push the cost. But I have to admit I'd probably, at this point after waiting 10 years, pay $300 to get SC2 (w.e. the amount of games that are released under its name). SARCASM.

But if it was $150, I'd probably pay it

well you spent more than 150 bucks on shits, besides is 50 per game but with a year or more between each expansion, thats gives you time to gather money, and lets face it , none of you are poor people.

#21 barth 3 years ago
Maybe just balance issues?
EDIT: Nevermind :P

#22 cyannuremagik 3 years ago
who told it was going to be 50 euro?
with this business model they can lower the price , maybe 3*30 .
they will still win more money , yeah but they will allow player to play online FOR LESS.

and , this decision might not come from blizzard themselves but Activision/blizzard , which makes a big difference as Activision has been working this way with the guitar hero stuff ...

#23 GrooVe 3 years ago
hahaha, do we only play tvt first one year in a multiplayer ? :D

#24 Refined_Carbs 3 years ago
Starcraft II is sort of copying World of Warcraft. Blizzard sold WoW as a complete game with a monthly fee and then charged customers ~$40 for each expansion price plus a monthly fee, and yet, customers keep paying. I have zero interest in WoW, but lots of people around the world continue to pay for WoW.

I don't see why people whine about this.

We get sc2 earlier.

More people might get into the online scene. (Due to the fact that each parts advertisement and exposure)

The people who likes to campaign will get larger campaigns.

The only real down-side to this is the fee.
#30 DD-Marco 3 years ago
kind of stupid but at least we will get sc2 sooner :)

#31 tOdAySuCkS 3 years ago
hm same way THQ sold Warhammer-Dawn of war... U can play only some races in the original and in the exp pack u play other races in single player.. but it is a full working game for the multiplayer "JUST" the race thingy

it's not a problem at all.I'm fully agree with #29! Im w8ing for SC2 Lore now

Having to pay for three games is a scandal. I'm not interested in the campaign, I only want to get in to the competitive gaming asap. So if they force me to pay for three games they have one pissed of customer, and will have lost a LOT of respect.

If on the other hand it's just for campaign, ie you can play full multiplayer right away without paying for 3 games instead of 1, it won't affect me much (as long as you don't need to buy the two new games just to get the new patches). But they will still have ripped off the people wanting the campaign.

This is not 3 games, it's still one game. All they will have done is split it up in to three disks, put them in three different boxes and given them 3 prices instead of one.

This WILL get more expensive, that's a fact. I can buy the idea with an expansion pack after a few years that adds more content etc, but this is just to milk as much money as possible out of this game.

There is only one upside of this, and that is a possibly earlier release date. But imo that's a very small perk for having to pay double to triple the normal price. And if I don't get the full multiplayer experience right away on release, I could've as well stayed with a good old for free demo.

When we buy the three disks(the three games (expansions)) it will be like in original SC right ?I mean i will have the three campaigns in one game ?

#29 the hardest part about making a game is creating the engine, developing the ideas, fixing bugs and balancing the game. I don't believe they need one more year to create another campaign for an existing game. It will require just a few more maps with triggers + some videos. They don't need to postpone it and make us pay more. The only thing i can think of is that there will be major patches included like BW to oryginal SC with new units and stuff like thta which will make game not compatible with older versions. Therefore every and each one of us will have to pay another $50 to keep playing. Blizzard sux

Well, it is ok I guess. But some more intel on this would be appreciated. I realy dont understand what this will mean to the multiplayer asspects of the game. That is what we all here realy cares about;)

#44 MaTTeX 3 years ago
Well if the first release will have fully playable multiplayer i dont think ppl will pay another 50$ just for another campain. I know i wouldnt. I will probably have less then a day of fun playing the campain and that just aint worth the 50$. And honestly, if you just want to play the single player campain you can go download the game. So i think the game's will act more like expansions like broodwar or the frozen throne. So you will still be able to play multiplayer with original but every one else is gonna play the expansions so you're gonna have to buy them anyway.

#46 PerikleZ 3 years ago
@ #45
It´s the Nighthawk - new name + new model for the old Nomad, but still the same abilities and stats.

@News
The first installment comes with the complete multiplayer which means you can play all races in MP and the Terran campaign (+ the Protoss mini-campaign). There is no information if the two other installments will be needed for the MP-modus when they launch.

So basically that means all players will learn Terran's new mechanics and a small amount of protoss (b.c. there WILL be a mini P campaign) in single player. So learning Zergs mechanics for multiplayer will be for shit

1) Earlier Release date

2) The campaigns are still going to be awesome epic with the extra time put into them.

As long as they don't change the multi player with the new releases, I'm all for this and think it's a good idea :)
