SCCL Map Contest

Posted by Sergei "S.Shneider[S2]" S 5 years ago

Not so long ago news appeared on our page about SCCL seeking new recruits for various administrative jobs, making us wonder how far have the preparations actually gone. But it seems like the big wheels are turning and the SCCL machine is in motion. The SCCL is getting mobilized, preparing for the blast off of the long awaited 2nd season of the high stakes ESL StarCraft Clan League. And first things first, they are hosting a mapmaking contest.

       Here’s how it goes:

  • 2, 3 or 4 player maps.

  • Maximum of 3 submissions per mapmaker

  • Balance is preferred over beauty.

  • The deadline for submission is June 1st.

  • Only one map will be picked.

  • The contest is hosted in cooperation with broodwarmaps.net

  • Submit map on the broodwarmaps.net forum here

  • The jury will consist of the main SCCL admin LoNiC;
        Two Broodwarmaps.net admins: flothefreak and Listoric;
        And two other jurors are yet to be revealed.

  • To satisfy my curiosity(and I am hoping yours as well) I hunted down Germany ESL-LoNiC, who was eager to answer the questions that troubled me.

    What pushed you to host this contest?

    I’ve seen many excellent maps submitted on bwm.net, and I think giving the mapmakers the opportunity to show off their skills in a top tournament is a great thing and will help this part of the community to remain alive and prosper, and give it the attention it definitely deserves. Other than that we want to give a signal that we are back in business and are going to start the second season soon.

    Why is the time frame for the contest so tight?

    We will need some time to determine the best out of all maps and probably will even have to adjust the balance a little. Since we are anxious to start as soon as possible and several good maps already exist we have decided that it would be the best to tighten it a little. Also not to give the qualifying teams advantage and training on the new maps, the last season’s map pack will be used for the SCCL qualifiers.

    Can you give us an approximate date where we can expect the SCCL to be finally launched?

    Hehe when it’s ready! Maybe in about one and a half month. First we are going to launch the qualifier and when this is done I will be able to give you a more accurate date

    SCCL should really be 6 1v1's and 1 2v2. only 4 1v1's is too low i think

    I dislike the whole idea of player made maps in tournaments, why not use well played maps that have proven to be balanced instead? :/

    yeah #7 is right
    why not just pgt or wcg maps? or OSL maps ><

    41v1.. well, 6 may be more interesting to follow but its the common format so why should ESL use another one? o.o

    #7: because on new maps, real skill is shown. too much routine is denied.
    that is why most of the players sticking to LT would lose on a different map. they are not skilled in a way of "knowledge", but most part of their skill relies on routine.

    completely incorrect assessment, new maps; aka "unknown" maps just means that there is high possibility of imbalance, and people winning on a fluke - versus 2 players playing on a map they both know 100 %, and that has been proven balanced, because on such a map the "better" player will actually win (generally, not always of course)

    I sure know which of the two I'd prefer, as I dislike the idea of losing on an imbalanced map or losing because of a fluke. Furthermore, I know people will just say "well practice the maps" but why? what's the point? The map will certainly fade into oblivion and never be used for anything again, so it's COMPLETELY pointless to put time or energy into getting better at a map that'll be used for one league, one season.

    2#7 some of the pro maps arent that balanced. Cultivation period for example.

    #11 I'm not sure what exactly you mean, but if you're just saying that as a stand alone thing, I'd ask you to read what I said again, here I'll quote it for you "why not use well played maps that have proven to be balanced instead" This would obviously exclude maps that are either very new, or imbalanced in the proleagues.

    IF however you meant that possibly imbalanced maps is part of the competition even for progamers, obviously these people are PAID to play, AND two maps always gets reused, so it's not "Wasted time" for them to practice on them, and should /not/ be compared to any pro league - And even then, I can guarantee you that the proleague maps are tested a lot more than any foreign playermade map.

    for some reason i thought you said OSL maps-.-;;

    I hope you guys know that many BWMN maps have been proven to be more balanced than many korean maps...

    And even statistically proven so as well, like Arena, Sattarchasm, Signal, etc. They're both BWMN maps.

    No map is perfect, and people can adapt to maps. In many cases, most games are won mostly because of a player's ability to adapt to maps, not necessarily because of the map's imbalances themselves.

    why we must use only a korean map, this is stupid, according to me they tested all the maps that at least to see are balanced.

    if having ONE map in the pool that is new and interesting is too much for some....ah nevermind. I think this is a good idea.

    as long as they pick my map :)
