Blizzard games to miss the WCG '11 finals?

Posted by Radoslav "Nydra" Kolev 1 year ago

According to Thisisgame.com, there is a strong chance that this year's WCG grand finals will not feature any games by Blizzard Entertainment. This means that this might be the first year that we will not see BroodWar in the game selection.

WCG 2011, whose grand finals are supposedly to be held in Korea, might not feature any Blizzard games. The major reason stems from WCG's main sponsor and KeSPA member Samsung Electronics. Apparently, Samsung has strong objections to BW, WC3 and SC2 being included in WCG's game list which might lead to the leading RTS-s missing the finals.

WCG have raised some objections to this move, stating that exclusion of Blizzard games from the list will lead to losing other sponsors, but Samsung's decision so far remains adamant.

Further obstacle comes from WCG's main broadcaster OnGameNet, which Blizzard are currently suing for intellectual property rights. It might be so that Blizzard games are not to be broadcasted in Korea and Korean gamers are not to take part at the WCG grand finals.

The end of the matter is still to unfold as we wait for an official statement by WCG.

Bad news but the point is that Blizzard the guilty here by starting a campaign against Korean organizations that have made proffesional leagues with the Blizzard's games. Before that happened Blizzard was doing games for entertaining, while korean scene took that and turned it into pro-competition.
It is bad too that good RTS games be a monopoly of Blizzard.

Shouldn't blame Samsung or WCG for this, blame Blizzard. As of late, Blizzard has been bullying everyone in e-sports for their lunch money. It's good to see someone making a stand against them and their actions.

Also, Blizzard is probably incurring a large inclusion fee for their games to be in the WGC (outlined in their new terms and conditions), which didn't exist before and doesn't exist in any other game.

Who cares about wcg when we have GSL already? LOL. And C'mon,
Samsung + WCG never cant have the people of blizzard, they're dumbs! like any big tournament, where they have to act based in their emotions instead of the brain, cash n etc etc, they are just acting against blizzard cuz blizzard had more succes thru the years. Samsumg and WCG.. Bah, Gsl is 1000+ times better than that shitty tourny.

So fucking deserved.
Maybe this will wake up the greedy bunch of retards that Blizzard has become, really.
What do they think? That they can beat down BW in Korea easily?
Really, you do not bite the hand that feeds you, every dog would fucking know but Blizzard doesn't.
Why do they think BW lasted so long and gained them so many fanboys for SC2?
Surely NOT because of Blizzard's engagement for pro-gaming.
Everyone who says SAMSUNG are the douchebags here better read up on what happened previously... because if anyone is at fault here then it's Blizzard and nobody else.

P.S.: Yes, I could very well live with no BW or SC2 @ WCG as long as it helps to stop Blizzard from acting like they're fucking dictators.
Also why the fuck would you add SC2 to the biggest LAN in the world if it doesn't even have a god damned LAN MODE...

#58 You're wrong. this is all about Blizzard and their new approach to e-sports. an approach that Samsung disagrees with.

if Kespa's contributions to e-sports and SC were so wrong, then why were they not stopped years and years ago when their operations began?
Blizz has gotten greedy as of recent and it's proving to be more harmful than not to the development of SC2 as an e-sport.

#60 i agree

Every time I read/hear a new information which has the word "Blizzard" in it, I just get convinced even more, that they must be the most fucked-up company of money-whores ever.

It's true that they do make fabulous games, but... God... those hypocritical assholes that they show in all those pre-release game presentations, that hype how important the "scene" and the "game itself" is for them... That's just pathetic.

Money is the only thing important here. I don't think it's ever going to be possible to see an article in which we would have those two words together: "Blizzard" and "compromise."

Man... this sucks... >.<

AoE, C&C, RA3 < SC:BW, WC3, SC2

But sometimes, someone has to stand up to the bully who keeps on taking everyones' lunch money, even if it means a broken nose or teeth.

i really like this decision :D
blizzard has really become very greedy lol
just look at their new games (nothing compares to sc:BW) or the first diablo

all have become money generators
like WOW, sc2 and their new game prolly also

and for those people saying sc2 should be casted seriusly lol?
it has no LAN
and have you ever seen vods of sc2? they SUCK badly

personally there are enough other games to show without blizzard games;)

like heroes of might and magic :D^^

but now seriusly without the korean scene PRO gaming would never been on the level it has been now(it was the first country where u could live as pro-gamer)

so if u think it's samsung or kespa's fault
reset your brain asap lol

I don't think WC3 pro players has any reason to stay in this game.
They might switch to SC2 this year, especially Grubby and Moon who is from a bit to move to SC2

Whoever said "kick korean players and casters" yeah... very good decision to kick koreans from an event to be held at South Korea xD very smart
And who actually watches WCG to watch foreigners vs foreigners? ppl actually watch it for Foreigners vs Progamers and Progamers vs Progamers...

Problem is that Blizzard sued KeSPA for intellectual theft in 2008 and KeSPA has been challenging Blizzard's rights to intellectual property since then.

In a sense Blizzard is entirely right and entitled to take action. KeSPA was stupid not to say we're wrong - because they woud have lost millions from distribution of live BW on TV channels.

Basically it started off as KeSPA being greedy & Illegal bastards. And now they're trying to pressure Blizzard.
I'm supporting Blizzard in this... KeSPA can go to hell with their illegal actions & greed.

please, Kespa doesn't claim rights on BW, they claim rights on stuff they created - pro teams, league, marketing, infrastructure, etc. None of that work was done by Blizzard employees nor paid with Blizzard money. Blizzard reaped enough profits and reputation from the increased longevity and exposure of BW for years and they should thank heavens for that incredible stroke of luck. Kespa paid for their copies of BW - end of story, there is no copyright infringement or anything. They don't sell knockoffs, they sell their own work.
Do you pay ball manufacturer license fees when you organize full blown sports organization or is it the other way around? because i think it's the latter. Watch NBA, spalding are SPONSORS because they sell shitloads of gear thanks to NBA using their balls.

Imo blizzard kills the e-sports right now. Competitive gaming has to have strong grassroot movement because that is the way to gain momentum and followers among the masses. People need to have freedom to associate and organize local lan tournaments, local leagues and shit. Blizzard's heavy handed approach with centralized control severely inhibits that. They could have made shitload of money if they let people do whatever they want to attract more followers (long term prosperity of competitive gaming - bigger pie later) yet they chose the path of money squeezing from anything that moves (short term profit now)

Samsung doesnt actually lose anything here, since it has already made itself a name throughout the world. Samsung even has sponsors in the World Cup and already has a great reputation for their electronics... WCG? Dont think its a big damage to them...

I d still go to WCG even without Blizz games and at any case I dont want to have sc2 there since they have no LAN mode.

#60 = word!

Plus WCG is big enough to survive without SC. If they have to pay for players flight + broadcasting rights that will cost em a lot of money! they may just add other games instaed. Fifa and fighting games are always fun to watch, CS...a bit less but there still is a big community, and if they save money from BW and wc3 tournaments they can reintroduce Halo as a competition.

As for WCG in Korea : where did you hear that?
