Match report: Jinro battles White-Ra in a thrilling TvP

Posted by Lasse "Enron" Engen 4 months ago
Lost Temple is back in StarCraft 2, and like in the original StarCraft, the cliffs on the map are commonly used by terran players to harass expansions. Jinro plays terran in this very thrilling terran versus protoss against the Grandpatoss, White-Ra. If you want to see this match without spoilers, either download the replay or watch the VOD in the links above.

White-Ra spawns at the 9' O'clock base as the red protoss, and Jinro as the blue terran at 7' O'clock. Jinro opens with dual barracks while White-Ra is teching before he gets more units than a zealot and a sentry.

A nice little detail is White-Ra preventing Jinro from landing the barracks to a new spot by moving the probe around for a while, though nothing major, only saving White-Ra some time as he is making a robotics soon, and doesn't have any troops to hold off an early attack.

The first attack eventually comes, but White-Ra gets his first Immortal soon enough, and with help from a stalker, a sentry and a zealot, he manages to survive the attack without taking any serious damage. Jinro has his expansion ready by the end of the attack the game evolves into a long game. Jinro makes a reactor to his new factory, but doesn't make any hellions and rather lifts the factory off soon, thereafter landing a starport to the reactor. He then makes two early medivacs while White-Ra got his templar archives ready, and also the psi storm ability ready in short. White-Ra does have an observer in Jinro's base, but he does not spot the medivacs before the observer dies under marine fire.

By the time Jinro's marauders, ghosts, marines and medivacs reach White-Ra's troops of zealots, immortals and high templars, the high templars have energy for almost two storms each. Jinro drops a ghost to one of the cliffs in the middle to call down an EMP, but only hits two high templars with it. He makes up for the bad EMP shortly thereafter though, and hits the majority of White-Ra's army with the second EMP when the troops meet. White-Ra seems to get the upper-hand after the fight, and Jinro loads the medivacs with the units he's got left. The medivacs survives as White-Ra doesn't have any anti-air at this moment, and Jinro moves the medivacs to White-Ra's second expansion at the golden minerals, drops the marauders and marines to harass some probes.

White-Ra sends his army to save the base, and Jinro responds by loading the medivacs and dropping them onto the cliff of White-Ra's natural expansion, killing the assimilator as well as several probes. Also note how Jinro kills off the high templars before they get to pull off any storm.

Jinro continues to harass White-Ra's golden minerals expansion after moving them from the natural, but at the same time White-Ra counter attacks Jinro's golden minerals expansion as well as the main and the natural. While at it, he also adds another nexus at the 12' O'clock base for another expansion while Jinro does more drops, and harasses some more.

White-Ra seem to do some damage to Jinro's expansion as well as his main, having zealots and immortals attacking basically everywhere all around the terran's base, but somehow holds it off, and as White-Ra has put down another expansion at the 12' O'clock's natural, Jinro responds in dropping marauders at the cliff.

After this intensive part of the match, White-Ra ends up having three running expansions, against Jinro's two. Though Jinro keeps on harassing White-Ra's natural expansions from the cliffs with marauders, who have a long range and are able to kill off probes and zealots, while later adding a siege tank to the cliff. White-Ra counters the golden minerals expansion of Jinro again and again while being harassed by the marauders and siege tank on the cliff, but does not succeed to kill the planetary fortress by the golden minerals.

With psi storm, White-Ra finally clears the cliff of his 12' O'clock's natural expansion, and counters the golden minerals expansion yet again, but history repeats itself, and Jinro manages to save the base, which is almost mined out anyways.

The game evolves into a table-tennis match, with attacks back and forth, White-Ra makes a couple of Void Rays, but of little to no use, and Jinro expands at 3' O'clock, but gets attacked by White-Ra and floats his command center away from the action. A lot of action going on at all times but one fight overcomes the others: White-Ra puts down some beautiful psi storms on Jinro's infantry, but Jinro still manages to get on the top after the fight, killing all of the protoss troops. Is psi storm too weak against the terran infantry?

"Sick game :)"
- Jinro
After this attack, White-Ra loses the grip of the game and Jinro gains a supply advantage as well as an expansions advantage. White-Ra tries to warp in some units to Jinro's base with a warp prism, but Jinro quickly gets some troops there without taking any damage. Jinro attacks White-Ra's expansions at 12' O'clock, while White-Ra tries to do some damage by harassing Jinro's expansions, but it isn't enough and Grandpatoss has to type GG.

making a couple of colossuses would've won this game tbh.. i dont get why some protosses refuse to make them when facing a terran bio army

This game is epic though, that planetary fortress held its own pretty good.

#3 Jinro had like 9 vikings or so, colossuses wouldnt have stod a chance against that. Great game in general.

The planetary fortress won the game for the terran player else he would have died after 20 min. Terran is still the main turtle race

#5 Then Phoenix + Collosus or Immortals are way to go, in late game protoss needs that air support..

wtf? suiciding on the Fortress is not very smart move... if WhiteRa have an advantage better go take care of the main base and ruin the tech progress not attacking an expansion guarded with a 2500 hp "thor" [i mean the fortress] that can be repaired Oo" and it's not the first time i've seen it happen. remember the 4th battle report? the exact same shit... when are protoss's gonna learn? =/

A mixed tech is always better than avoiding it, so even if the Terran has anti armor Colossus should have been made, the game could've been turned.

#6 How you can say that after that much harass Terran has this game??? Please... Game was really good, but I agree with Others, at start when Terran still didn't have any Anti-Air, White-Ra could have go for 2-3 Colossi. He also made a lot of mistakes, but hey I am not here to judge him, great game!

Also, he never upgraded Blink with Stalkers and never made a lot of them, I think the fight could ended different if he was massing more Stalkers instead of all those HTs that didn't do enough damage cause of EMP and focusing them. Together with Reapers, Stalkers with Blink are one of the most mobile ground units in SC2, I think people didn't really discovered their full potential.

Also In a Whole game White-Ra used only 2 Sentries, and I think that 2 was by Mistake... xD
And with their Guardian Shield, they are like made for PvT match-ups.

Had White-ra used chrono boost on his robotic facilities and continuously pumped out Colossus, he would have put up a decent fight.
Sadly, he forgot both.

There's definitely a lot he can do to improve, forgetting your macro mechanics in the middle of the game was definitely a blunder for an ex SC1 Semi Pro.

I still say feedback is the key to win vs T late game.

I played a 40 minute PvT @ LT vs Tarson today, I basicly took my half of the map and casted feedback at his Medivac/Ghost/Thor when I got the chanse, finnally I had som much units + money I could just A move into those really strong Planetary Fortress.

Question : Are Viking those Big Marienes Shooting slowly or the ones shooting a flame-like attack?
#24 RamiZ 7
#23 LOL! :D Vikings aren't either of them. Hellions are Vultures that has flame-like attack, Marauders are big marines that shoot Rockets, and Vikings are Goliaths that can transform to the Air mode, something similar to the Valkyrie.

#17 it's almost impossible to land feedback on the ghosts before getting EMP'd but if they let you feedback it's very good vs Terran especially if they're stupid enough to build thors. But then again, they're not gonna let you. Maybe 1-4 feedbacks in a game but that's it T_T Scan + EMP l0l0l0l

And to those ppl saying he should have added collosi, no he shouldn't he had no antiair whatsoever and the Terran had 9-10 vikings. If Terran scanned toss army and saw the first collosus with some pheonix he would just add more vikings, and keep in mind he was already 10vikings ahead so toss would never catch up without sacrificing to much on the ground.

#14 make alot of Stalkers? Have you even played protoss? Stalkers is by far the worst unit in the game and probably in anygame ever made. I'd rather mass scouts then mass stalkers
