Blizzard is not getting attention from progamers.

Posted by Tony "ReiKo" Španjol 2 years ago
StarCraft 2 is designed to be a competitive eSports game that can grow to dominate the scene. But in order to so, it must first penetrate eSports Mecca, South Korea.

In February, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime set foot in South Korean soil during a routine trip to check out the situation at Blizzard Korea. But this event couldn't go unnoticed as Mike Morhaime settled in a private hotel where he wanted to do a brief presentation of the StarCraft 2 beta directly to the progamers and proteams.

The event was cancelled because most of them turned down the invitation. To lower the tension, Blizzard Korea said that this was just a product of "scheduling misunderstandings".

Some speculate this happened because Blizzard didn't get KeSPA's "approval" to hold this kind of event. There is also an anonymous source saying that "Blizzard Korea doesn't want to recognize KeSPA as negotiations partner regarding intellectual rights, but that's not the right way to think about it... ...KeSPA was created together by the teams, and KeSPA is essentially the teams themselves.".

Wherein lies the problem? Between Blizzard and KeSPA? or do Blizzard Korea have any unresolved business with the Korean eSports Association? How much will this, seemingly not up to par relationship between producer and organizer affect the progaming world as we know it today?

I'm with Tosu on this one, what we have the most is potential players wanting to go in pro-scene, Blizz should make their own development in this area independently of Korea.

This means that foreigners will dominate sc2 scene. Not a bad thing in my opinion.

#3 if.tosu -> There is so much popularity in SC in Korea and also outside its borders, that KeSPA dont actually need new game, that is not ready.

Same mistake happends when Quake 4 went out - every organisation started to support it, and that game was not ready for such stuff, so it fell down and turned back to Quake 3, where scene was many times bigger.

I`am at side of KeSPA, because I like that idea, that main teams are running association and THEY build popularity od StarCraft, not Blizzard. To be true, they dont need Blizzard at all and SC will be more populate then SC2 - for sure for next season and I hope they will continue with it even longer.

I wish, Czech scene would be so wise to support NecroRaisers in simmilar activities here in our country, but they rather fight, so they will be owned.

imo, if KeSPA doesnt wanna work with Blizz on SC2 then I say we leave em in the dust. they need to get over themselves.

if blizzard made pro gaming bigger in foreign countries than in korea that would be great, but the odds of that happening are like finding a needle in a haystack i think =(
1
#23 veEKthx 2 years ago
Well lets find that needle... Like #3 said let them come begging.... but really i think blizzard should approach KeSPA about organizing an event as KeSPA is really just a union of sorts for the teams themselves.

its just a logical reaction,,, if u want to sell a new baseball bat to several teams, u have to contact the MLB-head office, not the several team managers,, xD blizzard just has to recognise, that the pro teams in korea belong to KeSPA!

#27 jiho 2 years ago
#19 im pretty sure, korean league will move to SC2, all korean Game broadcasting Channel reduced SC1 and WC3 games and lots of WC3 gamers r turning to SC2(mb cos of similar interface of both game?). KeSPA just want to take and show their postion as the organisation of the ProTeams in korea.

if korean progamers dont play sc2, the game will take long time to find itself. Thats the truth xD

i agree with kepsa
first let blizzard make a proper game that really resembles SC1

not this piece of shit called sc2(yes i played it)

it's horrible not very fast paced at all if u ask me

3d and FAST PACED don't get ALONG

2d for fast paced

keep it simple
keep it smoth

i love korea for doing this

SC1 FOREVER!!!!
:D

i love sc1 :D

Kespa in control is not good for any1 outside of Korea. Blizzard is by far the best option since the availability to watch pro gamers and play is the best with them. I would have no problem with Kespa if they at all catered to a more international audiance though.

Hmmm, fuck Kespa, fuck Korean pro scene, really. It will die eventually. Maybe in 1-2 years.
This was such a friendly kind invitation by Blizzard... how can one turn it down?

The future of Starcraft2, Esports and Progaming lies in Europe, North America and China, not in Korea.
And if Koreans like SC2 they will buy it, no matter what ugly Kespa says. And then they will want to watch good SC2 games and they will be shown, if not by Kespa then by someone other! And Kespa will die if they dont give the people what they want. That easy.

You cant win this fight Kespa.

Hmm, who made Starcraft1? Kespa? Nooo, Blizzard... who released 10 years after still patches? Blizzard... hmm, was ICCup, ChaosLauncher and the other cool tools made by Kespa? Nooo... private users... actually "foreigners".
Just LOL @ Kespa sealing his own death.

@30: I agree with it not being as good as sc1 YET (remember how long it took for sc1 to become this good), BUT you cant say it is not as fast paced.
SC2 is actually faster than SC1. Maybe too fast if you ask me.

management tricks.......doesnt even worth to think about it. if kespa whants money theyll pass to sc2 3 4 5 6 7 when the time comes.

#34 080485 2 years ago
Part of me wants kespa to totally ignore sc2, so blizzard would have to work twice as hard to make it good enough for progamers :)

Poor Kespa thinking they can make a million dollar powerhouse company to beg them get a quality product.

#30 3d and fast paced dont get along?? Seriously dude...

Blizzard didn't make SC1 famous .. KesPA did .. im with kespa on this one .. hell ive been playing/watching SC1 for a long time and there are so many RTS came out, SC2 feels like it doesn't matter, maybe not yet.

#39 Your kidding right?

Every Blizzard game has been launched in the United States(and Europe) first and then in the rest of the world.

WoW had a giant advantage since it was first launched in the United States and only after months in Europe, and after one year or more in Asia.

So, how does Blizzard launch games in Korea first, if they actually get launched in the United States first?

#41 HeadshotDel 2 years ago
Cmon its not a big deal. Blizz just dont want to have business with Kespa thats all. Theyll find compromise, Blizzard have the most popular game, Kespa have community. Journalists like to make an elefant from a fly.

wow #32. much bs u wrote TT but yeah iccup and stuff is the reason why SC is so big right now. not korea (kespa) nono . some stupid iccup. right. hang urself~

and with this "e-sport progaming" shit u wrote. korea is already there where the rest of the world is in like 4 5 years.

why hould the korean scene die? :D because they mb wont play SCII?~

#43. what do u think how many people in korea will go in with SC if JaeDong flash and so on will go on with SC hm

#43 Stunny 2 years ago
Niether kespa nor korean progamers/proteams will decide the fate of sc2.
only the general public has the real effect, a game can only become part of esports if it has a big fanbase. if ppl like it then tournaments will be organised and sponsors will sign players.
no professional sc organisations will stick to sc1 if there is more money in sc2 which it will be if more ppl enjoy it, thats just business.

#42: Because Starcraft in Korea is already dying right now, slowly, but it is. Watch the scene 5 years ago and watch now... last MSL's final hadn't even spectators! 5 years ago thousands watched!
You can't entertain people with the same game forever... so if they dont go sc2 they eventually will die... #43 wrote what I ment.
SC2 will sell great in Korea, with or without Kespa. You will see.

#44: wtf, source is right under the article. -_-

name a real time strategy game that has3d and where you can control units like sc?!?!

i play alot of games and i haven't encountered a single 3d game where micro is so fluent as sc

3d is making games slow (if there is alot of eye candy)
