Starcraft training: iNcontrol does coaching for cash
Posted by Sebastian "PolygonreVue" Sjöberg 2 years ago

Geoff 'iNcontrol' Robinson is a name that any visitor of this site will be aware of, and many of you will also know that he for some months already has been giving coaching lessons in Starcraft as an enterprise. Now, as a way of making ends meet as a college student as well as a gamer passionate for Starcraft, iNcontrol is re-launching his coaching services, and in the mini-interview below he tells you why it's a good deal. Read on to find out if it's worth $10 of your money:
PR: As you write in your post, you are now offering your services as a coach to aspiring Starcraft players, where you for $10 an hour give comprehensive feedback and advice in order to improve their game play. What, more exactly, does a player get for that money? Do they get to play against you in any match-up, or is the teaching limited to your expert field of Zerg?
iNcontrol: The coaching program I have set up follows the model of a personal trainer for like tennis or piano playing. I will play right alongside with you in whatever matchup it is you want to work on, be it 1 or many.
We will work on the map you want and we will even go more specific on the matchup in terms of micro, macro, timings, counters etc.. etc.. whatever it takes to make YOU the customer a better player.
These sessions are done with ventrilo for most effective communication and they are fully capable of being tailored to the needs of the specific client. I have worked with A- skilled players and I have worked with D- skilled players.
Both ends of the spectrum are capable of receiving beneficial training from me since my true worth isn't necessarily found in my specific skill with this game as a gamer (while that does help) it is more fundamentally found in my knowledge and understanding of the game but further my ability to convey said knowledge and coach to each individual.
PR: How long have you been doing this kind of coaching, and how many clients have you had so far?
iNcontrol: I have been coaching like this for 3 months now. I have had over 30 clients with many repeat sessions. I have customer reviews published so people can get a sample of the thoughts people have expressed following one of our sessions.
I always offer these reviews to my students as they allow me to improve upon my services but also they offer information for prospect students who want more knowledge of what they are getting themselves into! The customer reviews can through the link at the bottom
PR: There is a lot strategy resources online around the Starcraft community that any player can access to get help and learn how to get better at the game, but very few people with the high enough skills offer this kind of coaching. Why is that so, and is it about to change, do you think?
iNcontrol: The reason you don't see more top players coaching is because it is time extensive and for the most part, not cost effective. Spending hours to help someone with their SCBW game is nice but laborious. This is a very complicated game and it took me many years and many more hours to get to where I am.
I enjoy teaching and coaching so this is part hobby and part passion. I have no dreams of making this my professional career but while I am finishing my degree, and working another job, I have time to spare and engaging in a mutually beneficial endeavor is a fantastic exchange. I get to help the community but at the same time receive payment (albeit small!).
There are countless resources for players these days. Replays, instructional vods, daily podcasts (day9), strategy sections etc etc.. those are all fine and good and people can and HAVE benefited from the information there.
However there simply is no substitute for someone working directly with you on all that information and more importantly: showing you how it is implemented in the logic, philosophy and eventually the direct game play of SCBW. I am very confident in this and the results have spoken for themselves.
Give me 2 hours with you and you will be far better in TvP than you would have had you spent 6 hours watching vods, replays and reading strategy guides. It boils down to are you willing to spend a few bucks to expedite the process?
Additionally many people don't learn from self researched info.. some need it shown to them. And for those, I am unique and effective.
PR: You are a sponsored professional gamer and you're playing for the team Evil Geniuses, EG. Many of your customers are players that want to break away from the low- or medium skill level where they are, and become good enough to compete with the foreign elite. Some even have the dream of going pro. Starcraft is very challenging, but is it possible with the right help and determination to go fram C- to A- in less that a year, would you say?
iNcontrol: It is possible for sure. SCBW requires a talent and dedication to be amongst the best. Some have that ability. Some do not. But the determining factor isn't ability alone but who you work with. If you do not have access to training with top tier gamers but aspire to one day be a top gamer, I offer a resolution.
If you have top tier training partners but aren't benefiting, I offer a resolution. Going from C- to A- in a year is difficult but not impossible. For most I would say a year of training, including sessions with me, could improve them around that much. I am not making promises mind you since your benefit is determined entirely upon how much you implement and work on what we talk about.
PR: 2010 will likely be the year when Starcraft 2 is released, and a new chapter of progaming begins. Many are waiting for that and the fresh chance it provides, as well as the new possibilities it may bring for eSports. Few of us have played The Sequel yet, but still, if you start learning Starcraft: Brood War now, will those skills translate well into SC2 – in your judgement?
iNcontrol: I have played SC2 through the various stages of it's development and I can tell you that the SCBW skill you develop now will transfer. Especially since Blizzard is working fairly hard to make the games as similar as possible and still remain within their desire to create a new game.
There will of course be entirely new skillsets that we ALL have to learn, but going into the biggest CPU game release of the decade with a pre-set of skills that are transferable sounds mighty good to me!

#11 Yeah I hate it too :D But it was only soft I was thinking when I was writing that. #12 OMG That was only example. If you don't like it I can say other program or something.
I dont wanna insult nobody but after see a few post my smarteness was damage ^^ So i just gonna say one thing "50 games for 50$ seems like a better deal" If you thing this is like a deal that a hooker do... Im seeling me to just give you "plazer" in that 50 games after that i dont care just go home and forget about you. How the can that can be a better deal? No offense to westside
It amazes me that people can get upset about coaching for any kind of pay.. this community receives an amazing amount of charity but the second someone asks for money in return for a service everyone gets upset. Sorry guys, I wish I was in a position to train people for countless hours for nothing.. but I'm not. I am however offering to do it for a VERY low wager.. so if you want to try it out it is there for you. If not fine, but why flame? I am not rubbing it in people's faces or FORCING anyone to pay anything? THis doesn't hurt the game for anyone it only improves it for those that take me up.. so why bm? Sometimes the maturity level of people in the SCBW community really shows through.. be happy for someone for once.
10$ for 1 h LOOOOOOOOL
a simple toss from latvia Beat incontrol... i don't think its a guy to learn from... if it would be iloveoov i definately would like to be trained :)
a bit of bad i think he did it very later
well if people want to pay for lessons go right ahead. I don't know if I would support this, but I guess I don't oppose it so best of luck and hopefully you can get some people willing to drop a few bucks to improve their game. I think that getting lessons is definitely beneficial.
i am thinking what kind of people pay for a sc leson
Lord_of_Chaos: DvS)Jots: I got from e/d- to d+/c- in a few months Great for you. You do realise the big roadblocks are ahead of you right? Reaching d+/c- is not an achievement that gives you any ethos. And working yourself up to a decent clan with players of Inc's caliber would take literally years, if you ever get there. btw if incontrol want to teach for 10 at month let them do it, its not your money but my advice its that there is not worthy to spend that
"i am thinking what kind of people pay for a sc leson" probably the same kind that spend hours and hours on sc. but i'm sure you've never done that. i can just laugh at all the "incontrol is not good enough" people... the guy has been a top foreigner since forever. he has seen strats and trends come and go and most importantly he was always the player to adapt and use his head, not a mechanics player. most kids can get a nice iccup rank by playing their asses off, always following the same build pattern and strategy until they build up enough apm. but such kids come and go, once they stop their full time practicing they become nobody again. few have been around for years consistently challenging and beating top foreigners over and over again. someone got a lucky win against an inactive incontrol? congratufuckinglations, i can beat my 60 year old table tennis coach, does that mean i can start coaching international table tennis players? btw who the hell is westside? has he been in ToT? has he ever qualified for wcg grand finals? what are his achievements? don't make me laugh...
lol at this news and the thing itself..
there is one thing that really makes me LOL big time in this thread and its the people putting westside as a better player than Inc, I mean bigfuckinglawlsauce! Westside that guy who only 3 hatch ling all in's every single fucking game? hahaha...! omg, Inc has been a top player for so many years now and like someone said before GL finding a top player (or korean progamer rofl) who is willing to teach you SC for free... Why does so many people get's mad for this? You know people "in real world" pays for: Swimming lessons: http://www.swim.com/swimming-lessons/ yeah, instead of going to a fucking pool and learning to swim by themselves millions of people pay for this shit rofl... and guess what no one complaint's neither thinks is stupid. I mean knowing how to swim can save ur life, but its such a simple thing that literally any human being can learn by their own, it takes like what 1 hour to learn to swim? and thousands of useless things and nobody says omfg u paying $300 for getting ur room paintd? why don't you do it yourself? This is so stupid no one should get money just for painting other's room... people pays a lot of money for learning to play an instrument like piano, will this be something that will translate in some kind of income in the future? Probably not, but the simple reason that u enjoy playing piano and u want to be better at it its enough to pay someone 20 bucks an hour to teach u, and oh boy it will take u months to be half decent at piano... So If its something that you enjoy ( playing starcraft) and you don't want to spend 5 hours every day losing at iccup wondering why u are getting owned, why not pay some bucks to someone who will explain you a lot of things that will make u a better player in a shorter time? If you have the money, go for it.
you can learn enough from threads/vods/replays...
westside beating me 50 times, would teach me nothing. Inc is providing a great service, and i can tell he would be an exceptional teacher. All of you that are bitching about ten dollars an hour need to get out of high school and maintain a real job. Also the notion of playing on full tilt for ten minutes to pay for an hour of gosu training is more then lucrative. thanks iNc.
#64 can I ask, why would you get bm about this? Do you really think I am doing something worthy of flaming? What is with this? I can fully understand disagreeing with this being beneficial, I can see people thinking this isn't for them.. but why the next level, why the hell would you flame and call me names? Can some of you grow up please?
| hey stop jumping on inc! it doesnt hurt you guys at all if he gets paid to teach bw, btw i would defintely jump inbed with inc that cuddly bear, even if i got money for it rofl :) :| |
this post does leave a sick feeling in my stomach, but really, its nothing new. just to point out something tho, the ammount of hours you need to play this game to get good, and at the rate inc charges, id be out on the streets quicker then kwirice. inc + admins vs angry hippy nerds
#68 Haha why is it Geoff´s fault when ppl pay for it? I guess ppl are mature enough to know where to spend money and time on. Games are here to enjoy your freetime and i do not think its more stupid to pay for lessons/games as going out and pay money to get you fulldrunken and wasted.
you sound mad jaedong-x17 Can I offer you a hug or something?
Im pretty sure this is some kind of a bad joke XDDDDDDDD
maaaaybe it would be ok to get taught by ppl like idra, ret etc. but after seeing the latest games from inc..... ROFL (im not saying hes bad, but hes not a top foreigner to me)
shad.. maybe you should take me up for lessons? http://www.repdepot.net/replay.php?id=29007 lol
#75 you are just so american. Gj for beating me 1 game zvz and posting it in your "I TEACH FOR MONIES" thread ;D It doesn't change the fact that its a joke :P Btw did anyone pay you yet?
#76 Shad the real joke is your reading comprehension. I discuss "the people that pay" within the news you "read." Which I'm sure you didn't but still have the audacity to post about. I'd beat you in 10 more ZvZ's if you like. Point is it is funny when people like you flame me.. what have you ever done? #77 You are trolling and I am done indulging you. This will be the last post! People have taken my services and been quite happy with it. I obviously will not subject their names to the likes of you but if you were actually interested there are links to reviews written by actual customers. If you are as big of a douche as you seem to be you can hunt them down if you like. I'd recommend you don't. It looks better when you are just a douche to ME and not a bunch of people.
for the love of god somebody lock the comments already this is pointless, people who are interested will see the news and contact inc, the others will just shit all over this and theres no point in this. There will be no intelligent discourse here, and nobody will be swayed, everybody has already made up their minds and only insults can come from this.
some people sound like jealous and intolerant kids. who are you that you think your personal taste of what is worth spending money on is superior to all others? money is just an vehicle to get those things that are worth for you atm. some even spend money to get virtual money in a game. but if so.. if its worth for them and those things in the game play atm a much bigger role in thir lifes then I dont need to go to the forums and boost my ego in acting superior to them just because I wouldnt do that. maybe also some got enough money so the saved time in the learning period of the game is more valuable to them than the 10 $ for one hour.. if there is an offer and what you give and what you get is clear and no trick then there is nothing negative to have this opportunity.. nobody forces somebody to the deal and if there are players that have an equal and better amount of teaching skill and taking less money then its also the business of every single person to investe some time and compare those offers or build up connections IF its WORTH for THEM. people could also be happy if high broodwar skill also begins to pay off in this way instead that it goes all to other hobbys that ppl here dont love that much.. and dont act like every noob can get the equal amount of personal training and advise from a top player for free.. thats just stupid. as if the lesser number of higher skilled players can supply an infinite amount of lesser skilled players and got nothing better to do. sure you may get one liners and hints here and there if you ask but thats not comparable to someone who focus a long time to personal train you.
seriously how can ppl be mad? we are talking about 10$ an hour , how fucking poor are u guys?
This has gone on far enough. It's sad to see how many people are willing to tell other people what to do or not to do with their own money. Also sad how many poor people we have in this community, given that they see $10 as big money considering it's like half a normal hourly wage. *comment section locked*
