Kespa VS. Blizzard: The Battle of GOM
Posted by Simon "Go0g3n" 2 years ago

Remember a month ago or so we wrote about the behind the scenes battle going on between Kespa and Blizzard. Back then, in order to go around Kespa and it's broadcasting partners MBC and OGN, Blizzard started sponsoring GOM with a general idea to bring all StarCraft 2 events on GOM, with SCBW, Warcraft III and WoW tournaments already being broadcast via means of GOM.
Well, you can wave goodbye to GOM StarCraft matches. Super Daniel Man posted this on his twitter page:
SuperDanielMan:
As of now I can safely say there won't be any more GOMTV leagues with Progamers in it.
Well, to make the long story short, under kespa there are 12 teams and most of them decided not to participate.

Now for the interesting part. Under exactly the same circumstances all current Progamers can and probably will be forbidden to participate in any televised StarCraft II matches, unless they are willing to leave their team(s), therefore breaking ties with Kespa and losing the Progamer status altogether.
A second, although quite outdated, punch from Kespa comes in a way that JulyZerg was forbidden, by his team STX, to go to Blizzcon, as STX is in close ties with Kespa, being one of the most popular teams and the host of their own tournament STX Masters Cup.
Although the situation gets more and more complicated, the goals are quite clear. Blizzard wants more money, much more, royalties from every single commercial broadcast, OGN and MBC clearly don't want to pay, as StarCraft is simply the most watched sport in Korea, especially among young adults, the most profitable and expensive ratings group of them all. Kespa, on the other hand, wants to keep control over the whole scene.
Your initial position might be all in favor of Blizzard, but, don't forget, that Kespa built what is now a StarCraft scene, made deals with broadcasters, to provide tv coverage, formed a ruling board over the whole thing, giving the teams decision making powers, made financial deals with professional map makers and a lot more.

I'm for Blizzard. Die you KeSPA shit why don't you create your own games and put rules on them?
dun give a fuk abt gom in the 1st place since koreans are so shit at wow pvp...better w/o them tbh...its like watching fillers... yeh unless kespa can somehow work something out with china i douby they can win this vs blizzard...
FUCK KEPSA for ruining one good league..
The biggest problem is pro gamers won't play SC2 according to news imho. This may be too bad. However, I'm optimistic that Blizzard and KeSPA will somehow come out with a solution suitable for both. Btw, I wonder what Tasteless will do without GOM now. I suppose he's able to find a new job, but I don't have any idea what and where. I hope he'll become a MSL/OSL commentator.
THIS IS MADNESS! Both parts will lose from this. I guess BW will live on due to this fact tough.
#1 without KeSPA SC:BW would be already dead so stop taking bullshit. #4 and very good, we all can stay and have fun with SC:BW
Btw this sucks for Tasteless.
#6 I lolled at your comment... and not in a positive way.
#6 Without BW Kespa wont even been created. I agree with #5. But when it comes to financial and copyright and whatever shit issues, they rather both lose than one gain.
WOW WTF :(((
OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO blizzard and kespa fighting and we have to pay for it..... both parties here are to blame both kespa and blizzard blizzard is acting like the greediest company ever and kespna wont let go of some power blizzard trying to get a deal with gom ( they have sponsered their last season) to broadcast games for new sc2 (and pay them for broadcasting rights) blizzard failed to get such deal with kespa (with ogn and mbc) and now kespa is punishing GOM for "cave in" to blizzard by removing its sc teams.... T.T
Fuck you KESPA for ruining GOM. Best televised starcraft matches. D: Btw, Blizzard has more power... it's their game, and Kespa wont come around SC2, never.
kespa doing stupid thing all over again? do they think they rule the world?
you see blizzard can win this shit ... kespa has to much might ^^
props to kespa, down with blizzard.
very very dumb
to all u kespa haters with out them there wouldnt be any ESPORT i know they made some dumb decisions (pp insted of ppp gets u lose and etc) BUT BLIZZARD (who i love every1 of its games) is acting like freaking greedy pig demanding to be paid for televising sc2 games. thats incredible stupid. imagine if microsoft will demand pay rights for showcasing a PPT (powerpoint) to an audiance. u made the game u get the money by us buying it thats it GG.
Wow this is great news! NOT! Hey blizzard, we already know SC2 is gonna suck, u don't have to pull SCBW down the pit with it. "Under exactly the same circumstances all current Progamers can and probably will be forbidden to participate in any televised StarCraft II matches, unless they are willing to leave their team(s), therefore breaking ties with Kespa and losing the Progamer status altogether." wtf Blizzard.. where did the 'Entertainment' go?
#17 Although Kespa's role is significant, they didn't make esports, by far. After all it's the game and the players, StarCraft was popular in Korea long before kespa, Boxer, YellOw, Nada and the rest of the old guys were under KPGA, a similar but different organization. Paying for intellectual property broadcast, even in modified and/or interactive version is a common practice. If you put a karaoke tv-show on, you'll have to pay royalties.
rly greedy... selling 3 games instead of one, Razer stuff and merch isn't enough? maybe we should spend some money to those poor guys... i would be very sad if they die of hunger before d3 or the next wow expansion arrives.... we don't get to see the showmatches etc., blizzcon only ZvZ, this company knows how to please the fans!! btw i doubt blizzard would have grown so big without kespa so be a bit thankfull! AND STOP MAKE THE FANS PAY FOR UR GREED !!!
#17 they will get even more money with SC2 since they're selling it in 3 stages, making it essentially equal to the cost of 3 games? btw your english ability always makes my day!
wtf Blizzard !!!!!!!! wtf KESPA !!!!!!!! "what we got here is failure to communicate " (GnR)
Hasn't the hate been thrown rather many times at this point? And the arguments for each side been said over and over :P I'd love to see how the players react to SC2 though, if they are going to stop playing BW and just move on or stick with it due to KeSPA and all that cal'. Anyways, sad news for all of us who don't understand korean :(
No point in arguing folks, in the end StarCraft II is going to win. SC community outside Korea is barely 100k, most of the players will play SC2, so will most of Korean pros, new community will be formed, and, with modern and increasing streaming capabilities tournaments will be everywhere, especially with Blizzard's backing. Hundreds of thousands new players will join in, making old ones obsolete in a matter of months. It won't take a day for Boxer, Yellow, Reach, Nada (who already said they will play SC2 and, rumor has it, have been hired by Blizzard for testing) and others to form a new Blizzard sponsored StarCraft II team, and the rest will be history.
blizzard is really greedy, it was perfect before this shit. they want it all, i hope to see them losing this stupid battle
I hope Kespa goes down in flames asap.
Go KEspa
#26 +1... After I heard what they have done about SC2 progamers matches I agree with that completely...
I feel bad for Tasteless and SuperDaniel :(
what happened to blizzard's sense of openess with gamers? they're losing my respect bit by bit
*****´s rule the world and money rule the *****´s... Sad news

I don't see how anyone could support Blizzard in this. In taking this step to commercialize the game further, they are effectively suffocating the esports scene. That Blizzard should be able to demand a part in the income for the broadcasting of they game might made sense on one level, but considering the reality of esprots today seems to total lunacy. I'm sure that the Starcraft scene is having a hard enough time making things go around already, and with the extra expenses of having to pay Blizzard it might just be too much. I don't see what claim Blizzard could make to those money. Now, if it was just Blizzard wanting to compete in the broadcasting business, that would be fine. Then KespA would probably be overreacting and would seem somewhat silly in trying to keep their monopoly.
I would suggest some of you look up the word "monopoly" and thats what kespa is trying to do... which is "illegal" i know some of you say blizzard is taking monopoly on their own shit but in reality the only thing they want is the game to be played and watched by as many people as possible (yes you have to pay to host televised stuff...but #care?) So if you can´t see that freezing people and leagues out sucks...Then you are just a korean wannabe fanboy which is sad in so many ways.
stupid blizzard they just want more and more money nothing else.... very sad news
they are both acting childish, blizzard for wanting to profit everthing, they think they can spawn a baby and come 10 years later to demand their fatherhood. and kespa is so close minded, this organization is limiting the exponential growth that esports scene can have across the globe; both of them need to fucking GROW UP. at the end blizzard has nothing to fear i think, they will continue with their money machine while kespa can eventually faint since it depends on support of players&teams.
Kespa ftw!!!! Hey guys, why dont you made a gosubet and a liquibet on this?!?!?! it will be epic!
Kespa > Blizzard :D
#35 If you own a company, you will want money, too. I'm sure. xd Don't be like babies: "oh, they want money :(". Of course, what else? Your smile doesn't feed them. :D Also, I don't find it logical to blame either company. They both want to get as much money as possible.
I don't really care that Kespa made BroodWar and ESports what they are today. What I care about is the way it will be run in the future. Which company will create the highest level matches, the best tournaments, and treat the players right? I can't answer that, they both care about money above everything else. Therefore, I hope that whichever company wins the rights to show Starcraft 2 matches changes how they seem to operate. Either that, or I hope a 3rd way presents itself and that wins out.
Obviously Blizzard will win this.
Hope on BLIZZARD, KESPA is DICKFACE!!!
Kespa 'made' nothing other then off of the backs of Blizzard labors, without Starcraft Kespa would never have existed so they should go off and collapse as they are not good for players by any means.
OMG, BLIZZARD WANT MONEY FROM THEIR GAME !!!!!111 How infuckingcredibly shocking, right ? Well, let's hope everything will turn good in the end, that's to say blizzard and kespa both hosting tourneys with every progamers in it. edit : Oh, and to all those guys crying " without kespa theyr would be no e-sport " Do you really think that no one else whould have loved to manage starcraft as they're doing for years, with all the income it brings ? Think a bit, guys.
Follow the money, and we'll get to see some good games. Enough said - this is the end of SC:BW as we know it and beginning something entirely new. It will be different, and it may be better than ever. Vaya con Dios!
I don't know which side to root for. In all honesty, I don't know what to say. Was this Blizzards greed or Kespas narrow-mind ness? It was fun to see Starcraft being developed to what it is today in Korea. In some way I guess I want it to stay that way.
Show me the money
Surely this looks ugly on both sides, but still.. I think Blizzard ought to get (even) more money out of this, because it deserves it! And I think goog3n was right to say that this wont hinder the coming of SC2 and it pushing SCBW away in matter of months.. By the time it comes out, Blizzard (and zillion other groups/factions) will have their own tourneys at the ready.
this is a fucking game man, what the hell is wrong with people T_T
fuck blizzard seriously.. all has to know that blizzard was buy by frenchies and since this time (2 y ago) they started to sux in relationship etc .. (70 euro for blizzcon, 30 € the stream even not protected for mozilla... etc)
