Battle.net 2.0

Posted by Lasse "Get.Enron" Engen 2 years ago

The Battle.net 2.0 discussion panel is done, with Rob Pardo on the mainstage introducing alot of the features the new platform will have.

Rob Pardo held a discussion panel regarding Battle.net 2.0 and he got booed at on stage when he answered "sorry" to the crowd cheering "beeta!". But he had some interesting announcements to make on the upcoming Battle.net 2.0 which made the audience in a better mood. Later during the discussion panel he showed a picture with the Queen of Blades, and a text saying one more announcement..., which sounds like something huge's coming up, but it was "only" an introduction of the new SC2 Marketplace, which is one of the new features in Battle.net 2.0. Read more about it below the picture.

Mapmakers will get paid
Rob Pardo announced that there will be two kinds of maps available in something called the Starcraft 2 marketplace. The free maps, and the premium maps. This is a function that was added to encourage mapmakers to make more maps with high quality. This way the mapmaker can charge people for downloading their maps, and make money by creating maps for Starcraft 2. Rob Pardo explained how you now can download Tower Defenses on the Playstation Network, even though the Tower Defense has it's origin in Warcraft 3 and Starcraft, where the creators of the maps don't get any credits for it. Now they will. Along with this a lot of other features involving maps and map editing was announced, such as being able to download the map before joining a game, having lists of maps with filters that can be sorted in many ways and some other stuff. A Map Editor panel will be held as well, so more information on that is more suitable when that is done.

Friends online
With the new Battle.net bringing all the games to the same platform, including World of Warcraft, we're now able to chat with each other, independent on which game you or your friend, or who ever you're chatting with, is playing. So this brings new opportunities such as meanwhile waiting for a raid in World of Warcraft, you can join a Tower Defense in Starcraft 2, and still chat with your raid mates in WoW.

The chatroom has also gotten a major makeover. What used to be just a chatroom, with whispers appearing in gray text, is now divided into separate boxes. More like a messenger if you'd like. You can speak with one of your friends in one window, while you have your team in another. This makes it much easier to keep track of all your conversations at once.

Real ID
The Real ID will be your master account to Battle.net 2.0. This is to prevent people to create a bunch of accounts, smurfing and so on, making a new account just to "own noobs". But the greatest thing about adding this feature is that you'll always have the same friends in your friendslist in all of Blizzard's games. Say you start playing Starcraft 2, make a bunch of friends and add them to your friendslist, but then when Diablo 3 is released you want to play an RPG for a while, then you'll still have the same friendslist as in Starcraft 2, and additionally you'll be able to see what games they're currently playing. This is good if one of your friends one day buys Diablo 3 as well, then you'll be able to see that, and you can hook up for some boss-runs or whatever suits you the best.

Additionally your singleplayer campaign will be available on any computer connected to the internet without bringing any save files on a usb-stick or such, as it's all saved on your online account. You'll also be able to read the latest news, download the latest content, and read the battle.net forums on battle.net instead of doing this in a webbrowser. Finally I'd just like to share my dying urge for seeing the screen shown in the picture below on my own monitor someday.

Battle.net 2.0 login screen

Thanks to RamiZ for sharing this in our forums.

#1 well there were some news about the beta, it won't be launching this summer I'm afraid, and I hate to say it, it's like I don't believe it yet. Like when I was watching the Battle.net 2.0 discussion panel, I was hoping for something like "now to the beta, we were just kidding, we're launching it right now. Ha-ha, in your face". Even though I know that won't happen :P

At first glance I'm not sure a micro payment system to encourage higher quality maps will really work to that end. I expect people who charge for their maps to be undercut by people who will make similar quality maps and release them for free.

I can however also see this as almost a mini games development area, with teams of people working on games of all styles. Perhaps with a demo level for an RPG, where you can pay micropayments for each subsequent level could entice players.

It will be an interesting experiment, to see if they can make an RTS a type of gaming platform.

And I wonder if they can take a small percentage of all those micro payments :)

What what what? We will have to pay for "high quality" custom made maps? ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
So I presume Blizzard will be taking a cut from the payments per map?

This is just getting better and better...

I dont understand why we have to pay for maps... this is disgusting...

btw its "paid" not "payed"! I always find that mistake!!!

1 account per cdkey is damn stupid. Imagine the harrassment progamers will get. And what about enjoying anonymity? This is the only instance that I will be using a spoof hack. Yep I said it.

Paying for maps is stupid. Remove please.

"This way the mapmaker can charge people for downloading their maps, and make money by creating maps for Starcraft 2."

Yep, you have to PAY to download high quality maps...

Why are u shocked? Do u still belive that Blizzard is like it used to be some years ago?

Wake up.

Seriously, wake up ,and prepare your wallet, this is gonna hurt.

From now, they are gonna charge for every single feature it can be charged.

I'm loosing Illusion every single day I'd read more about it.

Wow, blizzard coming in and making every about $$$.

HEY BLIZZARD, YOU STICK TO MAKING VIDEO GAMES AND LET THE COMMUNITY DO WHAT THE FUCK WE WANNA DO WITH GAMES THAT WE BOUGHT AND THEREFORE, OWN.

FUCK ACTIVISION BLIZZARD!

omg blizzard u suck!!! ... it's like they consider us some game addicts and therefore try to get as much as they can from us, knowing we will but their products anyway ...

#13 MetalHeadClan 2 years ago
#6, #9, #11 and #12 what do you care? it's only custom maps.
the only maps you should care about is DotA and the orginal game which will be free i promise you.
the other maps like TD and FOOTY are shitty any way, axcept that no one mentioned the price, it could be 1$ or 5$ any way will be low priced.

i hate the idea that i will have to have internet if i want to play single player, some times i'm getting d/c for an hour and then the intenet comes back.. usually when it happens i play single player mode but now it'll be a problem...

Edit: lol, i now saw that there's a guest mode for ppl which are offline and want to play single player...

PAY FOR MAPS? LOL

#19 ToqZiC 2 years ago
The dissapointment is final and has reached its limit now. Blizzard can take their warcraft in space 2 and show it up their online asses, along with all the pay funtions for maps and who knows what more, mixing in alot of wow and dota tards into our fine comunity, why the fuck am i even still here... I feel betreyed i mean how can they mess up like this and think people will just accept it.

They are making our mature and professional sc comunity go back to groundschool and pay for it ffs

I can tell you for sure SC2 will not be best seller for over 10 years

#20 MetalHeadClan 2 years ago
#15 DotA FOOTY TD and even the idea for micro wars came, all, from SC1.. =
so i presume that those map will keep up to SC2. dont you? :O

Blizzard sells wow gold directly to goldfarmers, i bet we will have to pay to add people in our friendlist sooner or later

#22 dyers_eye 2 years ago
#11, #19 I totally agree with you....blizzard is getting really pathetic by now. When they started creating sc2, they were like "we do what ever our fans wants us to do, just paste it on starcraft weekly blue" or however that show was named where players can send blizzard some ideas.....
Now, sc2 is gonna be like a bunch of shit!! Im not even exited for the beta anymore.
btw. the new "feature" that u can chat will pple who are playing other games like diablo, is nothing really new cuz we already did it in starcrtaft/diablo2....
WTF BLIZZARD U MUST BE KIDDING

"even though the Tower Defense has it's origin in Warcraft 3 and Starcraft"
only SC ;o WC3 then copied it from SC ;d but who cares.. I do!:D

It's dumb to make payment for premium maps, there are already dedicated people who will do high-end-quality maps for free, and if I ever will go back to making maps, I would never charge for it, lmfao ..

#24 SiGurD 2 years ago
It look exactly like WOW Login!
SC2 market? wh00t!?
1
#25 Betruger 2 years ago
Actually that Premiuem Map Market is a great idea.
Of course we have lots of dedicated map mapkers that make maps for free, but just imagine what they can achieve if they have that little extra motivation of getting paid for it.
Just think about it, if you make a great map, and price it, say $1, and people will love it you will be RICH. If icefrog got paid $1 for each player that plays DotA he'd have a crapload of money. Now that's motivation!
This will stimulate a lot of people to work hard on maps. Great move.
Prospect of money = greater devotion = higher map quality.

I'm not sure if Blizz will take their cut of the pay, but if so then what? You have problem with people earning money by making cool games?
It will be the map maker who sets the price and if he sets it too high, noone is gonna buy his map so I'm pretty sure our wallets are safe.

To sum up - we'll get the current amount of free maps + new epic high quality custom maps. I see no reason not to pay a few bucks for a tower defense as enjoyable as, say, Element TD

what the fuck? i dont want to talk to WoW chobo's.
IF I PLAY STARCRAFT WHY TALK WITH PEOPLE PLAYING WoW?
and whats up with only one account.. the progamers is gonna get overflooded by spam msg's
''this brings new opportunities such as meanwhile waiting for a raid in World of Warcraft, you can join a Tower Defense in Starcraft 2''

so starcraft 2 is just a distraction while not playing WoW? is this a joke?
i dont want to hear ''you can now chat with people playing WoW''.
the things i want to here is something in this order ''we have now added online replays back to sc2 and have fixed many of the upcomming lag issues''

im so pissed.. paying for maps? *no comment* -.-
im not sure i want to buy this game anymore.

#27 Rahra 2 years ago
wow....this is something. i agree with the people who said people who make premium maps will just be undercut'd by free ones that are very similar. paying of maps will come down to people who are trying to get into progaming; they will have to pay for the "pro gaming" maps. imo this will turn a lot of people away no matter the cost of the maps. iunno, its conjures the same feelings as i have from having to pay for halo 3 maps. imaging having to pay for the premium maps just to play the ladder, i mean cmon. more and more gaming companies are just gonna milk us for every dime we have. we as a community really have to put our foot down and just say enough is enough. quit trying to nickel and dime us and just make games because your dedicated and stop treating us as cash cows....

but on a side note, i wonder who is going to be the first millionaire making premium maps.

If u still download maps from ur opponents as its now it should also possiblbe to get those bought maps for free. if they dont add some encryption lock thing to ur account thou.

We will get owned by blizzard. First you will have to pay maps. Then F list. Then patches. Then new anti-hax. Then probably new expansion. Then new shit for expansion.

Lets face it. We are new wow tards.

#30 okyo 2 years ago
They forget just 1 little detail about the marketplace.
Most of the people playing the game are kids.
They cannot pay for maps, since they don't have a credit card and don't use paypal or whatever.
And I don't know many parents that would actually pay for ANYTHING in the internet, that has to do with games if they'd ask for it.
+ maps get old, specially ums maps, they get boring after a few games, so why pay for them anyway.?
7
#31 Get.Enron 2 years ago
#30 Don't forget all the parents that pay the monthly fee for WoW for their kids...

I think it's somehow good that the mapmakers get paid for what they do, but I doubt that that was Blizzard's intention of adding this feature though however, as they will probably get the greater proportions of thte money.

This can result in something good too though; More people will start making maps, I mean a bunch of people will. And that makes the competition bigger, which automatically results in better maps. But is it worth it. People are making great maps anyways... It will be interesting to see how it goes.

#32 RainySkyZZZ 2 years ago
Omg, are they kidding? They want someone to actually PAY FOR THE MAPS?! First they say they won't allow ladders like ICCup, and now this... That's one of the most stupid things I've ever heard... Unfortunatly, each news I see about SC2 makes me become more and more sceptic about it... The only thing that I like is the gameplay itself... but the rest of it (including B.net 2) - FAIL.

#33 Feast 2 years ago
it's like the first time I've heard anything about sc2 and got dissapointed :( one ID, new chat system, exciting... Map payment? I don't think I will pay for a new map. I just go with the free ones. Battle.net 2.0 Revolutionary? Show me more and maybe you'll convince me. this is not revolutionary. Give us online reps watching and LAN latency!

#34 RamiZ 2 years ago
Hehe NP Enron anytime ;)
Btw one acc per CD key really sucks.
4
#35 InDi 2 years ago
#28 I was thinking the same :O
I really dont get the point of the paying per map system...

So... IF u DL AND PAY a premium map, this means u can only play that map with ppl that DL'ed it and paid for it?? <--- That sux hard, maybe u DL a map that noone else wants to play, wtf?

IF u DL and PAY for a premium map, but ppl can join ur game and DL it for free... WHY THE HELL do i have to pay then?? (Dont mind if its 1 or 5000000000000$)

I see the motivation for mapmakers stuff but it just won't work :O
3
#36 Zoler 2 years ago
Remember this everyone, NO ONE will pay for a fucking map. So no one will upload their map on this premium shit because then no one gets it anyway

#37 PRYDA 2 years ago
Greeeat, now we will have to pay for new maps too..
Luckily some people still play Lost temple and Hunters..
I mean it's not like it's going to get boring..

I want to be able to create a new account to own noobs =P
This just gets worse.

#39 stroggos 2 years ago
normal maps wont have to be paid for....since people will make them for free-since they are so easy to make. But maps like sc2:dota will probably be sell-able. So quit complaining guys.
#40 aimaimaim 2 years ago
LOL map makers were motivated on SC:BW because the game is really cool (notice the use of past and present tense) ..

nao if this pull through .. BAH! this will cause Blizzard to LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE money instead .. seriously .. i mean, hard core players won't play the game IF THIS HAPPENS ..

Blizzard in now on a DISASTER in SLOW-MOTION ..
4
#41 RamiZ 2 years ago
#40 What have Hardcore players have to do with Maps? Its just custom made maps like DotA, not normal ones. And I dont found that kind of maps that interesting as ladder SC2 1v1 so no problem for me.
2
#42 gH-ZoDD 2 years ago
marketplace maps leads into blizzard making you pay to download replays/vods from events o.o? would be a smart business move- shit for us though, after all most of the tournaments are getting hits etc while blizzard isn't making any profit/advertisment from other peoples tournaments.
2
#43 rockyada 2 years ago
that idea of paying for downloading maps won't work...
it will be the same story like a pirating games
one guy paid for it, put it on rapidshare and bye bye nice idea

#44 hyouro 2 years ago
To all you that think 1 account per cd key is gay... Its actually you guys that are gay/statswhores. I thought that ruined WC3 with all the people making new accounts and people who smurfed and what not. If you want people to enjoy the game and stick with it for years, you dont want them to play PROs in lower level cups/ladders all the time. If you ask really noob people of why they dont enjoy SC and WC3 its because they get pwnd all the time. You wouldnt want to play tennis all the time, if you lost every single game you play.

And if you think pros cant enjoy a game without fags msg´ing them all the time. As far as i heard about bnet, you actually have to accept people you dont have on your friends list to be able to talk to you. And you can probably also block all ingame text. But even so if they dont want to chat, they can just focus on the game and ignore the other people, i dont see any problems with that.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The paying for maps... I hardly doubt that will be a success. I´m not giving them 1 euro for a crap map like footy´s and tower defence that are bugged like hell.

But all in all im very pleased with this new bnet, i wouldnt call it revolution in server browsers. But theres really a lot of features that are nice.

are they even serious about that "buying a map" thing ??? cuz for me its just a shitload of fuck . i have to pay for a map to play on it ??? are they completely out of their minds ??? WHATS YOUR MAJOR MALFUNCTION BLIZZARD ? why have u all become such a greedy bunch of fucking moneysuckers ??? WHY ? i loved this company but now i have to see their downfall ... its sad , really sad .

i still will buy SC2 and Diablo 3 , but aint gonna pay a cent for some new maps or other content . cuz thats just wrong ...
1
#46 Betruger 2 years ago
You seem to forget that noone forces you to BUY maps.
Noone forces you to put your maps in the premium zone.
You can still play only free maps and create only free maps so what's the problem?
It's a fucking option.

And I can think of several ways to prevent these maps from being pirated.
For example there could be a database containing info which player (cd-key) owns which map.

(edit: Gawd, i thought gg community is made of intelligent people, but all of you seem to be kids and/or tards)
3
#47 RainySkyZZZ 2 years ago
Just now I was thinking... you can have 1 account ONLY... and what about joining a clan and you want to add the clan tag to your nickname? o_O wtf then?
1
#48 n4p 2 years ago
The marketplace will be an epic fail. As some ppl already said premium mapmakers will be undercut by ones doing maps for free or one person will DL a premium map and upload it somewhere for ppl to dl for free. Another option is that is a good premium map comes out it will be copied by somebody doing maps for free and thats it - this proposition is so ridicolous its not even funny. A marketplace for items in D3 has a future but SC fans arent used to paying for every little fucking thing and simply wont - instead many ways to override this will be devised.

The same thing struck me as #47, if you're only permitted one acc what when you join/change clans or just get bored with your current nickname ? This kind of suxx ass.

Btw. I cant believe in all the news about "pay for this, pay for that, pay for that and that" it's like they're not making enough money off the game sale itself. The rest is just fucking greedy. All the ppl saying "Blizz makes all of it and deserves to be paid" need to wake the fuck up - they make the game for which we will pay (3 times sic!) and thats where my gratitude ends. Anything above that is just greedy money-squeezing from players mostly ranging 15-18 years old who have no stable income even if they wanted to pay for all the shit Blizz intends to charge for.

Also no lan is the biggest bullshit in history - it's just one more "gentle" step to say - "you wanna play on BN ? Pay up !" in the future, and I bet they will. An average gamer will be forced to since they will gradually get rid of all other mplayer support in their games other than BN.

Imo SC2 plainly sucks ass - its not innvoative at all, units, sounds etc. actually look and sound worse not better. It's going to be easier to play (so no challenga and satisfaction from long term training). Epic fail. Btw imo Blizz should change the name of the company - since they are gradually destroying the good name of a brilliant young company of passionates that brought us Diablo 1 and StarCraft and supplied us with the worlds first mass international mp server FOR FREE.

Why do you need to have a clantag?... and besides im pretty sure you can rename your account. Else their 1 account isint smart, and they must have thought about that.
4
#50 RamiZ 2 years ago
Exactly, or when your friend come to you to play SC2, he can only play on your Acc... And when my computer is broken, or internet is dead. I cant play on my acc at all....
its pretty retarded #44 Dont deny it....
